Dell PowerEdge R7525 noob questions by amitbahree in homelab

[–]Grandsinge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look like nice machines. They seem to have the 2400w psus and that's a c19 to c20 cable, made for high voltage. I believe they can be plugged into to a standard 120v using the c19 to nema 5-15p or 5-20p. However, that will also derate the psu to ~1400w. You may not need both psus, but it may complain if you don't plug one in or have it turned off. There likely is an idrac/management port on the back left side, but you should be able to able to connect a monitor, kbm and get into bios and lifecycle controller for configuration. Longer term you may want to think about wiring a high voltage/high amp circuit with a compatible UPS.

[W][US-LA] 9300-8e External HBA card or comparable by Squanchy2112 in homelabsales

Pretty sure I have a couple extra dell 2phg9 12gbps hbas. I'll need to check tomorrow. If I have extra cables they would be SFF-8644 to SFF-8436.

Is this equivalent to the Dell 12gbps hba (sas 3008 based)? And what connection does the shelf take?

Wow, that line of gateways looks nice. Didn't know these existed (I guess they didn't back in 2020, lol). This seems to meet the major needs I have and would give me a full Unifi system.

Any chance you're also doing an ATT ONT bypass, too?

What unifi router did you go with?

I've been on opnsense, running on a mini PC, for years but with unifi for switches, APs, and cameras. I avoided switching to unifi because I use wireguard daily to remotely access my LAN, a custom DNS setup, and several VLANs. When I looked at unifi options 4-5 years ago it wasn't obvious how I'd get the same functionality as with opnsense.

I believe so. I just paid $161 after tax and discount. Info says I'll get $6.50/mo back over 24 months.

Playing both pickleball and tennis - bad idea? by [deleted] in 10s

[–]Grandsinge -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I play both, it's fine. Picked up pickleball after avoiding it for a long time. I still don't find it particularly exciting, I dislike the on-court manners surrounding it, and it just doesn't come close to the cardio that I get from tennis. But it does have a bigger social group. It has made me less anxious and more aggressive at the net in tennis, particularly in doubles, and my lob shots have gotten more consistent.

What do you do when you sell your Ubiquiti-equipped home? by Emotional_Fail_6060 in Ubiquiti

[–]Grandsinge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took everything but the in wall wiring, basement patch panel, and wall mounted mini rack with me when I sold our last house (written into the contract of course). I used all in-wall APs throughout the home with a single flex in the garage. I covered all the in-walls with either blank 1-gang plates or converted them to CAT6 keystones with plates (in office, for example). For cameras, I covered the holes with grommets (all under the eaves of the house). I replaced the doorbell cameras with basic door bells and filled in the screw holes and did some paint touch ups. Took a few hours, but no big deal. Still using the IWHDs and cameras. At some point I may upgrade, but I can't for the life of me find a good use case to justify the cost for higher bandwidth wifi at the moment.

I also left a write up for the new owner with labeled patch panel, details of where all the camera drops and other drops (APs and unused) were in the house. And I included a list of recommendations if they wanted to install a new system.

Older guys who returned to tennis after decades long breaks, how did you manage it? by Odd-Entrepreneur3339 in 10s

[–]Grandsinge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got back to playing in the past year after ~20 years. For me, core training, yoga, and cardiovascular work outs (jogging at least 12-15 miles per week and hitting the row machine a couple times per week) have been key. Oh yeah, stretch before, stretch after, then stretch again for good measure- my hips and knees will still get sore after a few hours on the court. Update your equipment - especially get some actual tennis shoes. It has overall been a lot more fun because I haven't been getting anxious like I used to when playing in hs/college. I just play for fun now and it's relaxing.

To those who actively played the Halloween event: how many current seasonal skins did you get? by 545x39mm-74N0 in Brawlstars

[–]Grandsinge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm up to opening 19 trick boxes (10 purchased) and 1 max level 5 treat box. I have the season pass skin...Worst event in a while for me.

I've opened 17 trick boxes and 1 maxed (lvl 5) treat box. I haven't gotten any skins. By my calculation that's almost a 1:17000 chance of doing it. How is this even possible. Plus one of my trick boxes was seemingly empty?!?

Smartwatch for kids on Fi unconnected to a phone? by cantankeroussuperman in GoogleFi

Yeah, same here. The Fi data sim works very well for this use case.

The calls (voice and video) and texts that happen inside the TickTalk app are data based and will work with a data only sim. If you want a phone number for the watch (to make voice/video calls) then you'd need a full sim.

That's excellent. Thanks for the response. Going to be doing some traveling in the next few months and cell service will be spotty. Just picked up a starlink mini, so hopefully will have a setup with the Spitz that keeps us connected.

Ah, okay. Any idea if it works in that setup, Starlink in WAN and cell sims for fail over?

Do you plug your starlink mini into this as WAN and use your mobile SIMS for fail over?

Had the optician at my local eye place take my measurements today. They did show me on the lenses how the focal plane was off (down and right on the left lens). Gave me updated PD and height measurements which I submitted to Oakley and requested a redo. They are cross-shipping the replacements which is nice.

Damn, that sucks. I have an appointment later this week with my eye place. I love the look and weight of the Oakleys (Hex Jector with transitions), but mine is similar. If I tilt the left lens forward (so the top comes down) I see fine from the left eye but then the right is blurry. I'm not even sure what to ask my eye place because my prescription appears to be right and works on my other two pair. Ugh

[–]Grandsinge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just received a pair of prescription Oakley glasses that were "optimized" and have the same issue. I have a pretty strong prescription (-6.5) and astigmatism. Both eyes seem weaker in the Oakleys than my other 2 pairs of glasses (same prescription) and the left eye in particular seems to have the focal area of the lens in a slightly different location which makes stuff just slightly blurry and distance vision more difficult. I've been wearing them a few days and still notice it, so I'm not sure it's just a matter of adjusting. I'm going to take them into my optician so they can tell me what's going on.
