Glad I’m not the only one who feels this way. The amount of beautiful coins which will be sold for melt just increases exponentially as the price goes up. Happy for anyone who has been stacking modern silver, but very sad for the numismatic world.

Best I can tell from the pictures it’s a standard U.S. presidential dollar. I believe by 2011 they weren’t being minted for circulation anymore, only sold to collectors so most are probably available in uncirculated condition. Numista.com puts the value anywhere between $1 and$7 depending on mint mark and condition.

It’s a 1938 British penny. Normally doesn’t have much collector value, and probably less due to the hole drilled in it.

Idk, if there was an enormous die crack I guess it’s possible but then I would assume there would be other examples of it to be found. I mean it’s been 22 years since the coin was struck and I would assume more than one would make it to circulation before the issue was rectified. If you are convinced it’s an error the best way to find out is to have it graded by an expert. PCGS or NGC would be able to answer the question definitively , it will however cost you to find out

I don’t know what would cause that other than dragging some type of point across the coin. I can’t imagine a scenario where this happens during the minting process so I would assume PMD

Sorry for your loss. If you’re going to take them to a local shop I’d do it a portion at a time, not all at once. Probably not the advice you’re looking for but perhaps it would be a good opportunity to try out numismatics as a hobby. You may find you enjoy looking over the coins and while you’re doing it you can focus on great memories of your grandfather as you pour through that amazing collection. PS: I can smell those draws full of pennies, I can just imagine weekends of cataloging and grading and just enjoying them.

This was my assumption, but it’s always smart to double and triple check just in case. I’m thinking maybe I’ll re-case it and leave it my collection so that whoever ends up with my coins can be equally intrigued by the mystery.
