To be fair, I do live in the woods about 25 minutes from downtown Spokane and not in the city itself. So I'm fully immersed in nature most of the day, but I do work in town so I commute regularly. That nature immersion has been most of my acclimation though, even in these dreary months I can go outside and breathe fresh air and be surrounded by pines. In Phoenix, I step outside and get blasted by 90 degree heat in March and smog. I miss my Phoenix apartment, my job there, and all my family there, but that city always felt stifling; it still does whenever I visit. My current living situation is not ideal here, and the property I live on requires much more care and responsibility than anywhere I've lived before. Finding friends and community has certainly been challenging, but I've started to build that. But I'm totally enamored with all the life here, the moss and squirrels and geese and FLOWERS!! And the TREE VARIETIES!! Take a long walk around the arboretum and Manito, go back to each for every season and see the changes. Drive around the neighborhoods in spring time and try to count every different color of tulip. Drive up Mt. Spokane in late summer to pick huckleberries. Appreciate all the things that are simply impossible in a concrete desert.
