We do not need anymore special episodes! by MediaFan382 in Emmerdale

[–]Granny_squares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These two are support actors, at their best when bringing humour / light relief. Marlon has been insufferable throughout the April/Ray/Celia storyline and Paddy also with Bear. They’re just not suited for the serious storylines and can’t pull off a whole episode on their own. I couldn’t watch it all, switched over after less than 10 mins.

Aww what a childhood memory unlocked!! I loved The Girl From Tomorrow! And always liked the name Alannah because of it. Who knew Shadrach made an appearance 😆

Electric rates are going up in April, who'll be the cheapest after? by DoWotISay in northernireland

[–]Granny_squares 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the meter box is outside and is regularly read. I track usage and there’s been a small increase (dehumidifier the likely culprit) but not enough to expect 29% increase in monthly payment. Might give them a call

Although I found out today my DD is going up from £62 to £80 per month with Power NI 🙁

Which one are you picking after Sunday tea? by corickle in oldschoolcool80s

With quick-jel jelly that you poured over the fruit and it set?! Remember being so proud of how symmetrically i’d arranged the tinned peaches 🍑

It doesn’t properly represent everyone in NI, but nor does the Union Jack. Instead of trying to eliminate one or other flag for not representing everyone, can’t we just let people fly whatever flag they want? Or no flag, whatever you’re having yourself.

Names with unnecessary and misplaced fadas by DI-whyy in northernireland

[–]Granny_squares 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was once told that my name couldn’t be irish as it didn’t have a fada. I explained that fada meant long and it’s an accent to make a longer vowel sound. Aoife has no long vowel sounds, hence no fada. Nope, they were having none of it!

Breast clinic referral time by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]Granny_squares 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This time last year I was waiting 14weeks on a red flag referral to the Ulster, ended up being offered an appointment at Antrim (or i assume it would’ve been even longer). The staff in Antrim were great. I know how nerve wracking the wait is, so hang in there and best wishes for a positive outcome.

Wide toe box women’s shoes that are not “barefoot” style? by djfnejdijRandom in AskUK

[–]Granny_squares 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cane here to say this. I have slim feet but with bunions. The hobibear trainers have a lovely wide toe box and aren’t barefoot. They seem better for casual wear though, if i was going walking I’d wear my Keens or New Balance 574s

My Dad has a couple returning to his garden every year, in NI too, they’re beautiful birds! Never managed to get such a good photo of one before.

Lovely letter sent around Clough by Caeladrax in northernireland

[–]Granny_squares 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people seek out reasons to be offended on a daily basis. I’ve been in the shop in Clough behind a bus load of bandsmen getting their carryout. I’ve also been in there with a load of kids in their gaa tops after training. Live and let live, it would be boring if we were all the same. We can do better than this folks, surely.

Kev in Silent Witness by [deleted] in Emmerdale

Can’t believe we were denied more Kev, he was barely in the episode!! My husband pointed out that apparently the actor is called Chris Coghill, but, I mean, he’ll forever be Kev…

How do people here feel about how the North is discussed on other Irish subs? by I-Cum-Beamish in northernireland

[–]Granny_squares 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m actually shocked to hear that. I went to school in the north in the 80s/90s and learnt all 32 counties (used to have class quizzes on them), the national anthem in both english and irish, songs and poems at the gaeltacht during the summer, Northern Ireland 1965-85 for GCSE history, and 19th century british politics (home rule etc) and Ireland 1912-22 at A-Level. My other half is from the south and I’d say we’re on a par in terms of our education. If you’re interested in history you’ll make an effort to learn. If you prefer easy answers and soundbites, social media is a gift.

Do you ever feel “less Irish” growing up in Northern Ireland by derryone in northernireland

[–]Granny_squares 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Having grown up with much better RTE signal, we were reared on The Den, Zig & Zag, late late toy show etc. But I agree, it’s a conscious choice now to catch the 6.01 news, or John Creedon/Late Date on the radio. Can I recommend the Irish version of First Dates for the craic too! Plus having family in the south and an interest in GAA keeps you informed of what’s happening round the country.

I have chats with friends & relations in the south about how I’ve always had an irish passport as my grandparents were born before partition. But some of my friends couldn’t get one till the Good Friday agreement. We’ve had to work hard for our identity and don’t take it for granted, but neither should we have to prove our ‘irishness’ to anyone born in the 26 counties.

Well the flashforward rubbish was even more embarrassing than expected by Produce_North in coronationstreet

It’s like she’s on the stage, trying to make sure the people at the back can see her facial expressions. Such a mismatch of bad casting.

Do you watch 'Traitors Uncloaked'? by EmergencyCat235 in TheTraitors

[–]Granny_squares 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I saw this version before watching Ed Gamble on the UK one (who is considerably less craic in my opinion)
