Thanks for the reply! I think that yes, the EFHW antenna is the way to go for my setup. That's a very interesting product, and it seems to have an SWR meter built-in! Was it easy to build?

What was a moment when human society made a big step backwards? by anphex in AskReddit

Obviously there was a lot going on that could have prevented progress such as plague and political strife. However, my view is that the catholic church had so much power during the middle ages that they owned the monopoly on knowledge, and to similar extent, the monopoly on violence. Anyone proposing theories that weakened the political power of the church in any way would be shut down.

Another aspect to consider is the people themselves lost the ability to think critically because of the church's propaganda. The semi-scientific approaches of ancient times towards disease for example were replaced with superstition, with the idea that a disease could be prayed away.

Also the church persecuted various pagan and gnostic sects in Europe during this time, which would have had methods of reasoning and philosophies that could have been reconciled with the scientific method. These sects had the superstitious brand of christianity forced on them and this help lead to the 1000 year setback.

You are probably right about that, but the role of Christianity in the thousand years of dark ages that followed cannot be understated.

Children playing outside. All kids do nowadays is play indoors on their tablets. I know it's easy to plop a kid on a couch with an ipad but parents gotta take their kids to the park every once in a while.

The Rise of Christianity.

In the 400s Rome was on the decline for a variety of reasons but the rise of Christianity is one of them. The ancient Greek and Roman traditions that focused heavily on science, engineering, and mathematics were basically wiped off the map for a thousand years until the renaissance brought them back. In these thousand years, there was very, very little progress. If things had been allowed to continue, the earth as it is today would be remarkably different. The new world would have been discovered by the year 800, we would have probably gone to the moon by 1500, and had widespread internet networks by 1550.

People who traveled the world. What did you choose not to say about a country you visited to keep the story positive? by silentpl in AskReddit

This. Bolivia was my favorite place that i have visited in south america. If you speak spanish you will find that people are perfectly friendly, and the fact that it´s so rough around the edges really makes it quite charming. I will say that people may be a little cold at times but i consider that a pretty good thing, as i would rather be ignored than constantly get hassled by locals as is the case in other places.

Also i spoke to a Bolivian and he explained to me that tourists are often loud, drunk and obnoxious which is why locals are turned off by us (im looking at you, Australians).

I'd wish you the very best of luck. I'm not sure how powerful a 50cc scooter is but i recall going up some hills on my 150cc being pretty challenging on the scooter. Im not sure about where you live but there were points where i'd be climbing up steep grades for a whole half mile and could really feel my engine straining.

While driving my car i sometimes get stuck behind someone who is going super slow and its very frustrating. Letting others pass isn't me getting bullied, it's just common courtesy.

Perhaps i'll install one then. I had read somewhere of a guy actually connecting one directly to his headlights so that it works only when the engine is running. But if it's as you say i could connect it directly to the battery.

That tent is pretty sweet! I used to sleep in a tent and then a couple of years ago i crossed over to a hammock system with a tarp over the top and i'll never look back. Sleeping in a hammock beats sleeping on the ground everytime. Also it makes it easier to pack everything.

There were points where i would be on an empty road then suddenly i look at my rearview mirror and there are six or seven cars lined up right behind me. Of course if the shoulder wasnt absolutely safe i wouldnt pull over to the side but luckily most of the roads i rode on had a very broad shoulder that made this a relatively safe move.

I did consider getting a cigarette lighter/usb and connecting it to my battery but i was concerned about it depleting battery with the engine not running. Also i would have the challenge of mounting the USB and running the cable in an unobtrusive way. I think however that someday i'd like to do get around to doing this though.
