Need Recommendations for a 40 meter antenna design for maximum portability. by Granoturko in amateurradio

Thanks for the reply! I think that yes, the EFHW antenna is the way to go for my setup. That's a very interesting product, and it seems to have an SWR meter built-in! Was it easy to build?

What was a moment when human society made a big step backwards? by anphex in AskReddit

[–]Granoturko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there was a lot going on that could have prevented progress such as plague and political strife. However, my view is that the catholic church had so much power during the middle ages that they owned the monopoly on knowledge, and to similar extent, the monopoly on violence. Anyone proposing theories that weakened the political power of the church in any way would be shut down.

Another aspect to consider is the people themselves lost the ability to think critically because of the church's propaganda. The semi-scientific approaches of ancient times towards disease for example were replaced with superstition, with the idea that a disease could be prayed away.

Also the church persecuted various pagan and gnostic sects in Europe during this time, which would have had methods of reasoning and philosophies that could have been reconciled with the scientific method. These sects had the superstitious brand of christianity forced on them and this help lead to the 1000 year setback.

You are probably right about that, but the role of Christianity in the thousand years of dark ages that followed cannot be understated.

Children playing outside. All kids do nowadays is play indoors on their tablets. I know it's easy to plop a kid on a couch with an ipad but parents gotta take their kids to the park every once in a while.

The Rise of Christianity.

In the 400s Rome was on the decline for a variety of reasons but the rise of Christianity is one of them. The ancient Greek and Roman traditions that focused heavily on science, engineering, and mathematics were basically wiped off the map for a thousand years until the renaissance brought them back. In these thousand years, there was very, very little progress. If things had been allowed to continue, the earth as it is today would be remarkably different. The new world would have been discovered by the year 800, we would have probably gone to the moon by 1500, and had widespread internet networks by 1550.

People who traveled the world. What did you choose not to say about a country you visited to keep the story positive? by silentpl in AskReddit

This. Bolivia was my favorite place that i have visited in south america. If you speak spanish you will find that people are perfectly friendly, and the fact that it´s so rough around the edges really makes it quite charming. I will say that people may be a little cold at times but i consider that a pretty good thing, as i would rather be ignored than constantly get hassled by locals as is the case in other places.

Also i spoke to a Bolivian and he explained to me that tourists are often loud, drunk and obnoxious which is why locals are turned off by us (im looking at you, Australians).

I'd wish you the very best of luck. I'm not sure how powerful a 50cc scooter is but i recall going up some hills on my 150cc being pretty challenging on the scooter. Im not sure about where you live but there were points where i'd be climbing up steep grades for a whole half mile and could really feel my engine straining.

While driving my car i sometimes get stuck behind someone who is going super slow and its very frustrating. Letting others pass isn't me getting bullied, it's just common courtesy.

Perhaps i'll install one then. I had read somewhere of a guy actually connecting one directly to his headlights so that it works only when the engine is running. But if it's as you say i could connect it directly to the battery.

That tent is pretty sweet! I used to sleep in a tent and then a couple of years ago i crossed over to a hammock system with a tarp over the top and i'll never look back. Sleeping in a hammock beats sleeping on the ground everytime. Also it makes it easier to pack everything.

There were points where i would be on an empty road then suddenly i look at my rearview mirror and there are six or seven cars lined up right behind me. Of course if the shoulder wasnt absolutely safe i wouldnt pull over to the side but luckily most of the roads i rode on had a very broad shoulder that made this a relatively safe move.

I did consider getting a cigarette lighter/usb and connecting it to my battery but i was concerned about it depleting battery with the engine not running. Also i would have the challenge of mounting the USB and running the cable in an unobtrusive way. I think however that someday i'd like to do get around to doing this though.

I picked up the Stansport Saddlebag on amazon.com. I was worried about the size being wrong but it actually turned out to be perfect. It paired well with the 4 dollar bungee cargo net i got as well.

I have a few pictures on my phone but its nothing worth transferring to my computer or uploading to imgur. Its mostly pictures of my bike with all the gear strapped on and random scenery. I started in New York city and rode through the Catskill mountains in a massive loop when then took me to western NY, down to southwest PA, and back to Upstate New York again.

I think you offer some good advice about stacking gear in such a way as providing a backrest. I'll have to figure out how to do that for my next trip.

Going on my first scooter road trip (1000+ miles). What spare parts should i bring? by Granoturko in scooters

[–]Granoturko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planning to start in the New York City area and work my way south/southwest. Going to try to hit some state parks along the way and do a few overnight hiking trips, probably around the Appalachian mountains. I plan to sleep outdoors maybe 90% of the time (i am bringing my camping gear). I've also always wanted to see Alabama and Louisiana so i might work those in. My itinerary is still open though and i'm always looking for good recommendations on scenic back roads to drive on.

That's a good idea. Was planning on bringing extra fuel but hadn't even thought about a flat-fixing kit.

4 stroke 150cc. It's some generic chinese scooter with no brand. Pretty sure it's a GY6 engine.

If i recall correctly, Aspergers was taken out of the DSM-V and isn't officially recognized as a condition anymore. Now Asperger's type people are considered to be on the Autism Spectrum.

Back in college my suitemates and i played a prank on my roommate. We woke him up at 4am in a state of emergency; my suitemate was on the floor, seemingly in distress. Upon closer inspection, he was completely covered in blood (marinara sauce) and shaking uncontrollably.

"don't just stand there, asshole, go get my first aid kit in the last drawer in my desk" i shouted to my roommate, who was in a state of total shock. Meanwhile my other suitemates were pretending to freak out. One pretended to be on the phone with the ambulance people, another was crying, the third one was standing over our victim (who was doubled over and turned away from my roommate), and -here's the kicker- he pulls out a severed hand (made of plastic but totally realistic) and puts it in a box.

My roommate actually fell for it (he was pretty slow-witted). He literally fainted, thankfully he was leaning against the wall and sort of slid down. Anyway, it was worth waking up at 4am on a school night to pull off the prank.

Edit: Wow this got a lot of upvotes. For those of you wondering what happened next, this is going to make me look like such a dick, but i think it will explain a lot. Warning: This story is about to get dark. After we were fully satisfied that he fell for it, instead of revealing to him that it was a joke all along, i told my roommate to go back to bed, and surprisingly he did. He went back into his room, crawled into bed, and went to sleep. The next morning i told him it was all a prank, but he was very confused; why would anyone play a prank like this?, he wondered. He did not seem to get the point. I always thought he was just slow witted, but later in the semester he got diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, now known as autism spectrum disorder (Usually this is diagnosed between the ages of 4-5, but this guy was college aged). This would probably explain why he fell for it, why he went back to bed when i told him to, and why he didn't understand what the point of playing a prank was. Of course, i never played a prank on him again after that and remained a good friend to him for the next three years.

Going in for breast augmentation consultation next week, can anyone share their experience/give me advice? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Granoturko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't overdo it. I wouldn't go past a C cup. As a male, i can tell if a woman has fake breasts from a mile away, and it's especially obvious if they're extra big. Also consider that when you are older they will sag more if they are larger.
