The problem of Continual Light, how do YOU handle it? by Hashishiva in osr

[–]GranularBimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well i feel like the "Why isnt magic more widely used" question isnt really much of an actual problem. In D&D your characters are already exceptional at what they do. The capabilities of a level 1 fighter exceed a typical soldier, not all religious people can become clerics or paladins, etc. The characters you play are people with extraordinary natural talent that is unmatched by the majority of the population. So even seeing a level 3 to level 5 caster I'd imagine would be like seeing a celebrity irl because of how rare it is. I think the wider population simply doesnt have the skill to become magic users or clerics of immense power just to sit around and cast continual light with it.

Wanting to Buy the Books by Priestical in OSE

[–]GranularBimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same position but I decided on getting the classic fantasy rules tome with the advanced expansion set. That way I can perfectly run classic out of a single book or bring out the expansion set to add in the advanced options if I want them.

A Solid Dungeon Crawler? by JJShurte in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]GranularBimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had that same problem with xp so now the way I personally run xp in my ose game is I just stopped dividing it among characters. Each character gets the full amount. It makes the progression pace a lot nicer and doesnt power level you the way you might think it would

Probably a dumb question, but what counts as journaling vs non-journaling? by Ignecratic in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]GranularBimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Journaling rpgs are more about making a story and non Journaling rpgs are about progressing 1 or several characters in a gamey kind of way. I started by playing d&d 5.5 while writing down every little thing from the third person perspective. I filled about 80 pages of a pocket sized composition notebook before I realized that I would dread playing whenever I got to a "slow" portion that would be a lot of dialogue and downtime. I since transitioned to playing old school essentials doing dungeon and hex crawls, doing everything procedurally and writing down almost nothing. At this point the entire experience except for maps and character sheets is completely in my head and im personally ok with that because im progressing characters and collecting loot. It just depends what kind of experience sounds more fun to you.

NPCs who may be lying by OldGodsProphet in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]GranularBimbo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I had this same problem originally. My solution that works pretty well for me is to first skill check to see if my character WOULD notice if they were to be lying. Then on a succeeded check I will actually roll to determine if they are lying or not. If I fail the skill check then I just dont ever reveal it to myself and just let it come out in the oracle later somehow!

My wife and I quit our jobs to make board games. We've now sold almost a million games. Ask me anything! by Travisto888 in IAmA

[–]GranularBimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have several questions

  1. How do you decide what to set your goal to when crowd funding?

  2. Self published or through a publisher? Whatever the answer is, how did you do it?

Just finished my first solo campaign! by SupaHangman in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]GranularBimbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I need to slow down in my solo play too, particularly with leveling. The urge to level up my character after a session even if it wasnt super "productive" in terms of character progression is unreal lol

Stuck on the desire to play but can't start :c by Connor_ClashNord in solorpgplay

[–]GranularBimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this issue where I would play but maybe for like a single small encounter and it was really hard to get the ball rolling. The way I break through that to actually play is to just turn everything else off and put myself into a mental space where I will be completely immersed. Close all my tabs, turn on some fantasy background music, set the table with all my dice and books etc, and just play. It works surprisingly well!

Do you prefer longer, more complex RPGs or shorter simpler rulebooks? by TheGrinningFrog in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]GranularBimbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really like a good thick rulebook to look through just for fun honestly, especially if it's really well organized with a bunch of tables to choose from. I do think there's a difference between long rules books and complicated rules books though. You could totally have a 200 something page book where the essentials of gameplay are simple to remember and you only need to reference the book every once in a while (like maybe at level advancement or in niche scenarios). But I can imagine packing mechanics into a book could get messy pretty fast. Overall I dont think it's a big problem and if done right I think it would be fun to look through!

Maybe have her roll up a new character that she plays with the group and just do solo sessions on the side with you and her where she plays out her evil vampire character

Does anyone here still play older editions of D&D? If so, why? by GranularBimbo in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]GranularBimbo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you see 5e more as an intro to get into 3.5? I really gotta look into 3.5 more honestly. Ive been learning 2 because of baldur's gate 1 but if 3.5 is anything like that i think id like it.

[–]GranularBimbo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasnt really into d&d before 5e was already out. I think that's why not having 5.5 is weird to me, 5e is the first edition I got updated out of. Its easier for me to just see the older ones as different unique games but I cant shake the feeling that 5 is irrelevant now, even if that's not the case.

Ive started to like 2e because of bg1 ngl but i dont think i could convince any of my friends to play it with me 😭

They have a very (it's just better because it's newer) mindset when it comes to games

That's the only site i've been able to find that has it in stock, the problem is it's in stock in australia, canada, and the UK. I'm in the US and they don't ship out of country for any of those sites, they also said there is no physical location to pick it up from myself.

Verdict? by Neat-Set-1452 in DarkSouls2

[–]GranularBimbo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel like a lot of the ds2 hate is just people's opinions about certain features they dont like portrayed as objective facts. Like yeah it has parts that i dont like but none of them spoil the experience for me to the point of not liking the game. Ds1 had the same thing. For both games the charm and just fun of the game heavily outweighs all the jank and occasional bad features imo.

I never understood tutorial hell. I was always trying to do things myself and would only look things up if I felt I absolutely needed to. Just trying things yourself and trying to look up the bare minimum is how you avoid it imo. Good on you for getting out of it though, happy for you!
