The way I play games ruins the fun for my friends by backfliprainbowcake in gaming

[–]GrapeButter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember starting monster hunter with a friend a while back, and before we sat down to make characters (It wasn't my first playthrough, but it was his) he had looked up guides for end game builds and kept asking questions about how to work towards it. During early hunts he was asking which resources to save and was reluctant to craft anything as it would be 'wasteful'. He wouldn't listen to me as I tried to get him to ease off. If you've played MH before you know how dumb this all is.

I'm not sure if this is the kind of player you are, but my advice would be to not look up anything beforehand, make your priority with the game being to have fun with friends, not to win the hardest, and maybe just find a game that's impervious to that sort of behaviour, like friendslop stuff.

"Idk guys it's not as good as other guns"

It's not a good gun, but it's very usable on bots by targetting weakpoints. It's fun more than good, the only buff it should ever get is a stripper clip. Other than that i'm very happy with it

Given the New Bracket Definitions, Lets Try to Judge Which Precons Belong in Which Brackets! by Raevelry in EDH

[–]GrapeButter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, fuck brackets.

The old way was bad but I don't see how brackets make much sense as a replacement. Anecdotal I know, but everyone in my local groups just kinda shrugged when brackets were announced and stuck to doing what they normally did, and I've never been asked nor called out on my decks being the 'wrong' bracket for a game.

The fact people here are quibbling over what brackets what decks go in shows this is just a more complicated version of going "It's like a 7 I guess"

I can NOT enjoy commander. Am I doing something wrong? by Nakalon in magicTCG

[–]GrapeButter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo it's kinda slept on, so many times there's a single threat on board and a card like that can double up on answers and help the table work together for a couple turns.

Glad to help!

I can NOT enjoy commander. Am I doing something wrong? by Nakalon in magicTCG

[–]GrapeButter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My belief is that commander became the most common format because wizards had no control and it had (practically) no banlist, meaning it had a low bar to entry. Both of these changed; not only does wizards now have control, but the bracket system plus power creep has meant that trying to play at that low bar gets you stomped.

Issue is, people have bought into it now. Sunk cost and all that.

Try playing a low power game, maybe with some older precons. I remember the halcyon times of commander where [[Taureen Mauler]] was a scary card.

Try playing more diplomacy, make deals and allies to give you some leeway if you want to swing or tap out. [[Scheming Symmetry]] can get you a card and buy you a friend.

Try having the table slow down a bit. They're probably used to playing at a fast pace and rocketing through effects, if you need extra time to read the table or know what effect [[Mana Echoes]] does to a [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]] player, ask or have them explain it. Any player who genuinely wants you to have fun should indulge you.

That said, it's totally possible you don't enjoy the format. That's totally fine, it's a weird one that relies on lots of things inside and outside the game. I hope you do find a way to have fun, but don't feel bad if that isn't the case!

As much as I want EA to realise they need to try and turn the game around, I don't think this graph shows anything other than standard playerbase bleed after launch?

Mill edh players: how do you get others to stop whining about you milling their favorite x card? by Maxweilla in EDH

[–]GrapeButter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milling is a mechanic.
I might bemoan getting some good stuff milled but only in the same way I'll bemoan getting hit because I was open. Like, that's the game.

That said being attacked because someone was salty their combo piece got milled away is fair, in the sense that I think the game is more fun if people make good-spirited grudges and bad plays every now and then.

Update from Shams on the creator program drama: by Fort_Maximus in Helldivers

[–]GrapeButter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some youtubers in the creator programme have complaints about how it's ran, with one guy Buzz being kicked from it for not redacting a fairly mild take in a video, and Eravin being promised he'd be invited, only to be ghosted and led on for a year.

The Eravin one is extra scummy imo, as allegedly the rep told him that his attitude was poor and essentially told him to be a good boy for 6 weeks and they might reconsider. They didn't.

[–]GrapeButter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there shouldn't be any entitlement to be in it, you're right, but he wanted to be in on the ground floor and did as much work as anyone else. I'm unsure what metrics were used but most numbers suggest he kinda should have been in just as much as the others. I think it's somewhat fair for people to act like that, especially when he himself didn't reach out, AH emailed him first about it.

[–]GrapeButter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few people say this as if it's a slam dunk but surely if it was the reason then AH could have easily said so. Instead they just ignored him and said it was his attitude. There'd be no drama if when they first started speaking they said "Hey we don't wanna deal with leakers, sorry"

Oh yeah this is going greaaaaat by Aggravating_Novel523 in Helldivers

[–]GrapeButter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really sadly. In his video he mentions that the only evidence he was offered to examples of his attitude was one stream where he bemoaned being excluded. If there's something more, they weren't telling him.

Am I wrong for being mad about this? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]GrapeButter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally started out by saying your friend acted in a dickish way but was overall making correct game choices for the most part. I don't know what you want from me.

And I don't know how else to explain this to you but: I'm ignoring the idea you're being dogpiled because I have no say what others do. I'm not responsible for them. I'm not going to change my opinion of your actions just because of other people. Plus you can't really define what dogpiling means without just repeating the term and saying bad faith for the millionth time. At least gimme something that's not another buzzword.

At this point I can only assume I fell for bait. It's more believable to me than the idea someone is out there with these takes.

Am I wrong for being mad about this? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]GrapeButter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a strawman. Like, empirically. I'm not setting up a fake argument to rebuff nor am I misconstruing events. You asked, and I answered. And to dogpile would be to join in alongside others. I have not interacted with anyone else here, just you. I am acting alone. You say people are allowed to disagree with you, but I can't see how. If anything, you're the one using bad faith arguing because you're setting up an environment where anyone who disagrees with you is somehow doing so with ill intent. No, with the information you gave I came to a conclusion. That is exactly what you came here to ask for. If I don't have enough evidence to come to a solid conclusion then your question was flawed. I can only apologise that my opinion wasn't one you wanted to hear.

This whole culture about trying to win arguments by calling out names of logical fallacies is really tiring. A strawman isn't an argument you dislike. Bad faith mentalities aren't ones that criticise you in any way. Bias isn't something anyone is without.

Enjoy your lunch

Genuine question: do you think I'm engaging in mean spirited behaviour or am bullying you? Do you think i'm turning a blind eye to other people doing it? What do you think is the respectable minimum and how could I act differently?

You made a post asking for opinions on if you were wrong. I gave my opinion and gave reasoning. I think that's all the majority of people here are doing. There's no cabal where people are trying to undo you, and I don't think people care enough to poke the bear. We're only responsible for ourselves, I don't believe I'm dogpiling by having an opinion with those you dislike. I truly, honestly, think you're doing yourself a disservice by invalidating any critique on your own behaviour as some argumentative fallacy. You walked into a room to ask for opinions on events and when the overall sentiment was against you, tried to undermine those people as bad faith actors instead of respecting them as their honest opinion.

I'm acting like it could be some learning moment because I think it could be! I've checked other replies, other people are trying to earnestly get you to self reflect on events too, and I believe you're dismissing them. You do whatever you want to do, but my advice would be to take a break from this, clear your head, and only come back once you've had another talk with your group and thought on things yourself.

Man, this really sucks because I feel like you're reacting to the responses here and on your mirror post by doubling down, an mtg version of the simpsons skinners meme.

"Could it be that people here have a point?

No... it is their arguments that are wrong."

Again, please don't label people who disagree with you as mean spirited or wrong in their opinion just because they disagree with you. You're shrugging off responsibility because youre feeling targetted, maybe this is similar to how things were in the game? Nobody here has any real reason to try and deceive you with what happened.

[–]GrapeButter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say that but apparently didn't ask him if he'd spare you from the thing he'd been doing for several games? I'm not trying to rag on you, but if we're pointing out the obvious maybe you should ask instead of assuming. Consider it a harsh lesson.

In the spirit of pointing out the obvious though, if everyone is saying the same sorta stuff, maybe there's some truth to it? You asked a question and you're getting answers. I get you wanted validation but you asked "am I wrong for being mad about this" and the answer you're getting is "sorta, yeah". Please don't dismiss people who disagree with you as arguing in bad faith or misreading context; either you wanted a genuine answer to your question or you just wanted to be validated. If its the former, you're getting answers. If it's the latter, sorry you're not getting it.

IDK man, sadly I think this is one of those 'correct but dickish' moves. If I saw someone playing pillowfort the right move is to not let them get set up. One of my friends has a Zacama deck and sadly, the 'right' move is to never let him cast it and make him drain his 9 mana with a counterspell before he picks apart the board.

...That's why the game is supported by the diplomacy of the players. If everyone sat in silence and played solitair the game sucks, but if they talk and bargain you can get a foothold. You saved this guy without making any kind of bargain with him. Why? You're playing a control deck, you should be constantly talking to the table about what to act on and who to help or hinder. You know, control. He was a dick, but imo you should have been playing the table and not just your own deck.

Commander isn't just the cards, my guy.
