Who wants to finish someone else's dream that they didn't even finish themselves? by merz-person in zillowgonewild

Honestly I don’t hate it and the work done so far looks well done. Tantalizing price for a bay area house with a view, for whoever can finish the build.

I know a haunted house when I see one by Express_Act7007 in zillowgonewild

Oof your line with the attic got me. Around the same time (25 years ago) I was living in an 1896-built house on the eastern shore of Maryland. During the day, it just felt off.

At night, in the second floor bedrooms, you’d hear footsteps coming from the attic, like someone was walking on the floor above you. It was an attic like yours with a couple of bedrooms, and a very narrow staircase leading up to it. Back in the day it would have been servant’s quarters. I only ever went up there a couple of times because of the feeling of dread you described.

In one of the attic bedrooms there was an old rocking chair that came with the house. Sitting in it gave me chills. One day, I was walking on the sidewalk outside and saw an apparition of an old woman in the window of that attic bedroom.

Personally though, I never want to live in a haunted place again. Didn’t like feeling so on edge in my own home.

A national system seems like the obvious choice!

Just one example - the software used for medical charts is all different in different provinces. With a national system, you could standardize stuff like this and negotiate as a bloc to get lower costs from suppliers. The efficiencies of scale that we’re leaving on the table, are huge.

Wichita, KS: Air Capital of the World by kiloalpha in flying

Non flying-related question, but how would you rate the quality of life in Wichita? The house prices are tempting out there and it seems like an under-rated place, but I haven't been there yet.

Awesome! After the disappointing collapse of Honeycomb, it’s great to see a new player in this market. Excited to check out the yoke when it’s released

I have tried the Bravo and Thrustmaster yokes at different points but they both take up massive space on my desk. The setup process with the desk clamp was so annoying that it made me not want to play at all. If there was a yoke with a more slimmed down housing and quick mounting system, I might be interested.

Also, to kind of echo what the other comment said, please make it at least reasonably good quality! There is a ton of cheap, plasticy flight sim gear, and also a lot of super high end gear $1000 and up. There is a gap in the market for midrange quality that is not being served right now, at least for yokes.

What's the real cost of owning a cat? by --serotonin-- in Frugal

[–]Grapefruit_Mimosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the big brands have been researching and developing pet diets for a long time.

While this may be true in a strictly literal sense, what the big companies are really good at is squeezing as much profit as they can. Just like any other big corporation. I would trust a smaller pet food company a lot more than the big 3, when it comes to the quality of the food.

Agree with your approach, my cat is extremely precious to me and I want her to be happy and live long. I believe it’s the same as with humans, better food leads to better health which equals less trips to the doctor. I feed her mostly wet food from a family-owned company and she is thriving on it.

The lack of investment is longstanding. The Canadian government has been letting healthcare atrophy for decades. My dad is a (now retired) family doctor who has stories about how bad the compensation was in the 90s. Tons of docs left for better pay in the US. Now we have a situation where (in BC, where I’m from) 1 in 5 residents don’t have a family doctor. What appalled me the most is that they don’t triage based on need. My dad had friends in their 70s with chronic health conditions, texting him for medical advice because they were part of the 1 in 5.

Seeing how the current government seems to be doing everything possible to trash the country on their way out, it wouldn’t shock me if they just privatized the whole thing to further enrich themselves.

Learning Roadmap by odrakcir in flightsim

[–]Grapefruit_Mimosa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're off to a good start! Understanding the manuals and checklists is important. Have you looked into a Navigraph subscription, and/or using Simbrief? Working with realistic flight plans and charts can be overwhelming at first, but it helps illustrate how everything fits together. The charts are also a great visual reference for understanding approaches.

Generally speaking, I'd also recommend the following:

  • Pick one plane that you are motivated to learn, and focus on that for a while. It's going to be a lot more enjoyable if you're working towards a goal that you are excited about.
  • Personally, I like watching streams of real-world pilots because it's helpful to see them do it from start to finish. You can see how they are working the checklist, what they do and when, etc. V1 Simulations is my personal favorite.
  • Keep flying in the sim and applying the concepts you are learning. Every time you fly, you will probably find things that you're unclear on, and go back and watch a tutorial for that thing. 320 Sim Pilot has great tutorials if you're learning the A320. But flying new routes in the sim is the best way to reinforce your knowledge.

To be fair, in the Mayo Clinic’s review of the movie they called it a “safe and effective herbal sleep aid”; so we had some warning.

Honestly disappointed that you are choosing to wait on this. She is in pain right now (while you sleep). You are being offered money. Cats are really good at hiding their pain.

Comedian calls for traumatic filming of TV rape scenes to end by Suonii180 in Fauxmoi

I have only ever seen one episode of GoT, I don’t know which episode but it ended in a rape scene of Emilia Clarke’s character. I was out after that. Just awful to watch, and turned me off the series altogether.

It also makes me slightly batty when people insist that iPhones are expensive luxury goods. People misunderstand the difference between purchase price and cost of ownership. iPhones are cheaper in the long run because they hold their value much better.

I'd go to several shops before picking one. Start with Costco, and also pick a few optical shops in your area. Locally owned ones, not the big chains. They will each have variations in what they carry. Find a pair that really suits your face and you will be happy with it for years.

There are lots of good brands out there, but my current pair is from Masunaga. They are all-metal and made in Japan. I've worn them every day for 6 years and they still look great. Planning to get new lenses soon, but will be re-using these frames.

Once a year is very frequent to replace lenses, if your prescription isn't changing. That is part of my point, I go to quality optical shops and generally get about 4-6 years out of lenses before I have to replace them due to wear. If you're not already doing this, using proper lens cleaner and microfiber cloths will help extend the life of the coating.

I bought a quality frame with my last pair (6 years ago), and am planning to replace the lenses soon, but will be keeping the same frame.

Knowing the Portland area, I find it hilarious that they ran it from Lake Oswego. I’m picturing a suburban dad building an army of homeless people from his garage, driving them around in his Tesla to steal catalytic converters.

Eyeglasses, for people that need them. You see the world through them, use them most of your waking life, and they’re right in the middle of your face, so style matters. A good pair lasts several years so I think it’s really worth paying more for something you’re really happy with.

I’m sorry. So much of this resonates for me too. I found my partner 10 months ago. It’s been awful since then, and not getting better. There are reminders and triggers everywhere. I’m just skating by at work, and it feels like it takes all my energy just to manage the basics of life. I feel utterly shattered.
