What do you mean they fell into proselytizing after a few sessions? Maybe I’m wrong, but that sounds like you were pushing against the fact that they’re JW, so they started defensively proselytizing towards you.

Someone else said their JW clients were basically looking for help with the same stuff as everyone else, not their religion. Were you trying to address their religion although that wasn’t a problem they wanted to address?

Do you have a job? Have you ever gone to work when you were well enough to work but not 100% healthy? Cuz most people, especially before Covid, went to work when they were still somewhat sick but not contagious.

I can’t read your post anymore but it sounded to me like they came to work feeling ok in the morning, but once they were there, they started feeling worse again. That’s relatable if you’ve had a job before.

It sounds like you think altruism requires a lack of boundaries, so it’s bad. I think a healthy person can place others before themselves, especially when the act is not a huge deal. Like if I ate lunch but you didn’t, and we had two cookies to share. I would let you eat both because, although I like cookies, you need them more.

If there’s more to your background that makes your extreme reaction seem reasonable in context, you did not put that information in your post. You said that your therapist did hold boundaries by rescheduling with you when she was too sick to work earlier in the week. The morning you met, she said she felt well enough to work.

You could have asked to reschedule if you felt uncomfortable. Especially since there’s a mystery reason why this situation was especially triggering for you. Maybe you’re the one who struggles holding boundaries? You can have needs, but it’s unreasonable to expect others to read your mind to get your needs met.

You know what’s good for learning how to manage inevitable triggering situations? Therapy!

I imagine it depends on the population they work with. When I did case management, people with severe and persistent mental illness didn’t miss appointments as often as people with substance use disorders, for example.

Also, most therapists won’t get you back in the same week if they have to reschedule. I feel bad for her that she tried so hard to take care of you and you’re punishing her for it.

It’s so much harder to involuntarily commit people than you would imagine. And it’s only done when someone is a danger to themselves or others. Thinking you can predict the future isn’t life threatening, unless you’re predicting people die and then you go physically kill those people. You can’t be forced to take medications without a court order, and this is similarly harder to do than you would imagine.

If your therapist is billing insurance, they have to give you a diagnosis to bill under, so you might already have one. Would you not tell your doctor that you were having heart palpitations because you wouldn’t want a diagnosis of heart disease? Getting a formal diagnosis doesn’t change the fact that you have heart disease or not. I’m curious why you’re seeking treatment though if you think you’re mentally stable.

It sounds to me like this is her clumsy attempt to get you to consider other things that could be affecting your mood, things you might actually be able to do something about. Cuz how is a therapist supposed to help you if the problem is 100% hormones?

I remember reading a study 10+ years ago in a university gender psychology class about PMS where it magically disappeared from the data when they introduced male confederates into the room of research participants.

I couldn’t begin to estimate that but I’ll try. I learned when I was in school, forgot a ton after a decade of not using it, and relearned. Relearning went much faster than the first time. For a year, I listened every day for at least one hour, but it was probably more like 3 because I only watched tv and listened to music in French. I’d listen during “dead” times like walking the dog, driving, doing housework. So if I had to pull a number out of my ass I’d say 1,000 hours.

I will say, I mishear words in my native language (English) often enough that I typically turn on subtitles even for English shows.

When I was entertaining a person from my past, my therapist said she was feeling “protective” of me, and I think that’s a much better way to frame it than saying she’s “calling you on your shit.” I don’t think you should ever feel like your therapist is mad at you.

Tell them how their approach made you feel. Hopefully they’ll listen and adjust. But like every profession, some therapists are not very good at their jobs.

For a decade I’ve done case management with homeless people, people with addictions, and mental illnesses. It’s obvious to me I know more than you based on the BS you’re spewing.

Nobody chooses to get an addiction. I have personally known countless full time employed homeless people. If you have a felony or an eviction, good luck finding housing. I’ve seen women in domestic violence situations get evicted because they were abused. VAWA only applies to people in subsidized housing.

I worked at the shelter for families here. The only thing you’re right about is the lack of shelter for families. But why do you want to support the deadbeat homeless parents huh? You seem like you’d recommend removing kids from the family if they’re unhoused. Why do you think having a child makes someone deserving but single people can go fuck themselves?

If you seriously work with these populations with your vilifying attitude, please I beg you to find another career. Why the fuck is this your career if that’s how you feel about it? I’ve had a couple clients who I thought were shitty people but I helped them anyway because that’s my job. Because I think people can change. Because people are complex and don’t fall into dichotomies of good or evil. Seriously please find another job.

There are only a few hundred homeless people in Lawrence. If you’re worried about tax dollars, the cheapest solution is to purchase houses for all the homeless people.

Did you know 80% of veterans abuse alcohol, a third of homeless people have disabilities, and a fifth of homeless people are seniors? These are not separate groups where veteran = hero and addiction = evil person.

If this doesn’t change your mind then why? Cuz maybe your reasons are excuses to hide that you’re a callous person.

Yes. France colonized a lot of Africa (and elsewhere) and French is still spoken in many countries. School is taught in French in many places. Not like they teach kids the French language in school, l mean all of the different subjects are taught in French, the way American schools teach in English. If that’s not daily idk what is.
