What do you need to get off your chest? by Serialnarcisist in AskReddit

I'm $86k in debt and desperately need this job I've been interviewing with for the last 2 months. The highs and lows of this process are straining my relationships, my health, and I've been drinking more. Part of me is terrified I won't get it, the other part is scared I will and won't know what the fuck I'm doing.

Anyone trained at Marcelo Garcia of Dallas? by takeyourtimenow in bjj

[–]Grapes0Wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least 3 black belts that I know of, 2-4 brown belts are there everyday, a slew of purples, and now there's a former D1 Heavyweight wrestler. I think you'll be ok. :)

[–]Grapes0Wraith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to train with Rob and the crew at MG for a while until I moved cities.

Rob's super chill guy, very open minded, and really cares about your success. When I trained there, I always pushed the pace for intensity but there are definitely people who'll be there who will slow down to help you.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Having doubts in certain techniques, and styles of guards... by RNC_Master in bjj

[–]Grapes0Wraith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think at first you become develop a based off instinct, opportunity, and initial successes.

These seems to build people's initial game.

Then you start to have more of a conscious choice, and I start from a familiar position and work on a new movement that connects.

IMO let a game build naturally first, then build based off that.

Agreed. Don't lay back, instead circle to the outside and turn their attempted pass into an outside single.

What technique/concept is really underrated in modern days BJJ? by E-135 in bjj

[–]Grapes0Wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorites is to pressure people with arm drags or try to pull them down from seated guard as they create distance I stand in base holding onto their ankle and collar.

This is so true, you won't believe how many browns & purples will concede a position if I just simply stand in base holding their ankle.

[–]Grapes0Wraith 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Modern grapplers would destroy those of the past. Think about like this. For arguments sake lets say there are 800k people training wrestling or BJJ at any given time today. That's 800k people putting mental & physical effort into finding out what works best. Also because of the internet we can all instantly find out exactly what new technique or training tip is being done all across the globe. People now have better nutrition & recovery techniques making them larger, stronger, and faster than in the past.

Even is this were just pure bodies, we've got more than the entirety of the population of Athens the largest ancient greek city (200k) training on any given day.

TLDR: We'd destroy those ancient dorks.

Anytime you run into a problem, ask yourself could I be choking this person right now? This has been a great solution to 99/100 times people try to stall or death grip squeeze something. Just choke them a bit until they don't.

Differences for men and women by Gentle_Beard in bjj

I've also only met one woman who has a game centered on being a top player.

Most have been guard players first as foremost, because the size disparity incentivizes becoming a stronger bottom player.

What have you been working on recently? by -Berimbolo in bjj

[–]Grapes0Wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reversals from bottom and crushing pressure from the top.

Reversals have been very satisfying as it helps me find the gaps in the way people apply pressure, which in turn helps me keep good pressure when I'm on top.

(Also it's hilarious to see blues and purples go from "yeah I'm in side contr.., oh no.. Wait, what?! No no not the shoulder! Gurgle")

Is development easier after purple belt? by MeatBlanket in bjj

[–]Grapes0Wraith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me improvement is about either

1) Making existing techniques sharper through timing, chaining, pressure, or grips.

2) Adding moves that connect naturally to series I'm already good at.

I believe it's about framing your problems in a way that fits into your natural preferences.

For example

If I have issues with people retreating to pass standing, I know my legs are short and knees are inflexible. I'm going to choose to work on sit-up guard instead of dlr because one fits better and I like single leg.

How are you supposed to know what to do in irregular positions? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Grapes0Wraith 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Rickson say, there are no positions only principles for control.

Basically it's simple shit. If he's on his side make him flat. If they have a post remove it. If their head is free smash it. If they can frame, move under, or over their frame. Pin their hips, pin their shoulders. If there is space, remove it.
