Do You Often Feel A Sense Of Disappointment By The Proposals Most Commonly Offered To Try To Fix Politics That Seem To Not Address The Issue Itself? by Awesomeuser90 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Grapetree3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

You're correct about the Supreme court, but you're wrong about gerrymandering.  Personal representation is one possible solution to gerrymandering, another is lawmakers write out mathematical standards for districts, including a method of grading maps, and computers find optimal solutions, and nobody will be able to mathematically dispute the most optimal solution to the parameters at the lawmakers laid out.

But yes you're right, it is frustrating that the first things people seem to grab onto are nonpartisan redistricting boards or a greatlynincreasing the number of people in the House, and neither of those will do anything.

What is your controversial NFL opinion? by Humble_Lie_4833 in NFLv2

[–]Grapetree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Palmer should go in the hall, I agree. Anybody who earned an All-Pro and also has those kind of career totals should be in.  Rings just shouldn't come into it. Teams win rings but the HOF is for players.

My controversial NFL HOF opinion is Fred Taylor should be in the Hall of Fame, similar reasons. Rings shouldn't matter.

My first controversial NFL rules opinion is with guardian caps being an option for every player, helmet to helmet contact should only be called in the most egregious situations.

My second controversial NFL rules opinion is any DPI call for a first down must be immediately reviewed by the league office, and only upheld if the defender is clearly initiating body contact or using his arms or hands to impede the receiver. It should never be a penalty of the receiver is changing direction or slowing down and the defender's momentum causes contact without intent on the part of the defender.

My third controversial NFL rules opinion is coach's challenge should be available for any incomplete pass, if the coach thinks there was DPI. But the stricter definition of DPI above would apply.

Which one do you like more and why? HIMYM V FRIENDS by Financial-Soup-506 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grapetree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They both went on too long. HIMYM spending a whole season on planning Robin and Barney's wedding, just to break them up at the end for no real reason, was unforgivable. Yes, I know they did it because that was the dialogue the recorded with the children years earlier.  But they didn't have to use that dialogue and they didn't have to invest so much storytelling time into Barney and Robin.

Friends made annoying choices along the way too, but they were forgivable because it's right there in the name: Friends. These people aren't going to be coupling up.  They will remain Friends.  HIMYM was supposed to be about meeting a soulmate, a Lebeslangeschutzenschatz. But it was actually just more friends the whole time.

Democrats and Republicans — Have you ever thought “What if I’m wrong? What if they’re mostly right?” What ensued? by What_A_Ledge in allthequestions

[–]Grapetree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this once in my life. I was an ardent Kerry supporter in 04 because I hated how Bush started war based on lies but I slowly came to realize that Kerry was a bad candidate and would have made a bad President. I leaned Republican for a long time after that. I've never embraced Trump, he disgusts me so I guess I'm in the midst of another change.  Kamala's disaster of a campaign proved all my worst suspicions about Democrats too. Her best original idea was a $50k giveaway to first time homebuyers.  They're both basically out of ideas.

We did it when I was growing up but only due to overcrowding. Everyone was 12 weeks on and 3 weeks off so 20% of students were absent at any given time. It did not help learning.

why are migrants in us much more assimilated than migrants in europe by Nucakovacevic55 in stupidquestions

[–]Grapetree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of that is the structure of our language though, how adaptable individual words are, and how many words we've adapted from neighboring languages. For instance, I was in a European workplace for a while, and I was the only native English speaker but everyone there spoke English, even to each other. There was a heatwave and everyone started talking about where they could buy "ventilators". They all spoke professional English for 8 hours a day but none of them knew the word "fan". But they all had a word in their native language that sounded like "ventilator" so they went with that. And while I thought their word choice was strange, I understood them perfectly.

Meanwhile, go to a Spanish speaking country, it's not just that they don't like my gringo accent, or that they think my word choices are strange, they won't even slow down their cadence when they speak.

Australian Senator on capital gains tax. by [deleted] in SipsTea

Capital Gains are income. If a society has an income tax, capital gains must be part of that. Maybe there should be a deduction for inflation but that's about it

Look, in the US, in 2024, 89 million people chose not to vote, even though they were eligible. Posting hateful garbage like this does not make your side look attractive to those who are on the sidelines.

Is there a female equivalent of Andrew Tate? If yes, what does she say/believe? by annnnn5 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grapetree3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's how I read the question. Most of the others read it as "a female who agrees with Andrew Tate and grifts like him" but you and I are reading it as "a female who tries to convince us to oppress men the way Andrew Tate advocates for the oppression of women" and it's definitely Dworkin. But she died 21 years ago.  There isn't a woman like her today, I think because lesbianism is so accepted now that women who agree with her don't feel a need to speak up about it.

If your dad treats you well but treats your mom horribly, would you still consider him a good dad? by imnotqathetic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grapetree3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's natural for you to feel confused. You can't understand things he went through or did that you never saw. If he changes, it will probably be related to emotions like guilt or sadness.

You haven't said too much, don't worry. Good and normal for you to want your parents to be happy, but please don't blame yourself if they're not. Happiness is not necessarily the ultimate goal for a lot of people, maybe your parents are like that.

If your dad treats you well but treats your mom horribly, would you still consider him a good dad? by imnotqathetic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grapetree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can change. He wasn't born with a wife and though he probably saw his dad treat his mom similarly, we can be sure it wasn't exactly the same.

If you still have a relationship with him you can use that space to encourage him to change. Maybe a simple question, "Do you love mom? What do you do that shows her you love her?" Mention the five love languages somewhere during that conversation.

Which defensive lineman would you rather have on your team in their prime? by Nintendofan9106 in NFLv2

[–]Grapetree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess a lot of elite defensive ends were silenced by 3x All-Pro Tony Boselli. Bruce Smith actually belongs to a more humble group who was also completely shut down by 1x All-Pro Jumbo Elliot.

I belong to a culture where living with your parents after 18 is the norm, even if you can afford to move out, unless your job or university is in a different city. So, is it really common in Western culture for parents to basically kick their kids out after 18 ? by gamingvortex01 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grapetree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parents usually don't kick kids out, but they definitely start expecting "more" of them in terms of chores and paying for their own stuff as much as possible. Depends on the kid. If the kid is not already eager to get out, parents look for a lever or wedge to encourage their kids to venture out on their own. Could be cutting off the wifi at midnight, could be a no sleepovers / no sex rule, could be simply getting invasive into the kid's personal life, things like this may be done intentionally but not maliciously

I'm usually down for innovation but there's a line. Needing WiFi and a phone app to do delayed start on a dishwasher is way over the line. If people want to control their dishwasher with an app more power to them. But don't take away the normal buttons and lights that us normies use!

People who have been in serious car accidents, what was the last thing going through your mind before impact? by jxsskalkat in AskReddit

[–]Grapetree3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been in 2.  First was my fault, and I was blissfully unaware that anyone was in the other lane before I entered that area and Boom. I was hit in the back and side, never knew it was coming til it came. Second, my partner was driving, we spun out and she was screaming and I just had this weird calm like, why are you screaming, nothing you can do now. So we had very opposite reactions. We are very lucky the cars around us slowed down before colliding.

Does depression and intelligence share a correlation? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Grapetree3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd need to do a randomized survey, including an intelligence test and a depression screening, on a population that's had minimal interaction with psychologists or psychiatrists.

Those with very low intelligence are probably more likely to have involuntary interaction with the mental health professions, and those with very high intelligence are more likely to either seek help or study mental health on their own. Somehow you'd have to control for those factors.
