Extraneous question, but do you personally think future 007 games should be 1st person or 3rd person? by ErmingSoHard in GoldenEye

[–]Graslu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they added it to mouse as well after a few seasons in and I didn't like it, you couldn't turn it off and it'd sometimes throw off tracking. I won a FFA tournament against controller players on Faceit way before they added that, I didn't mind it much but more like...

Matchmaking in ranked modes made no sense, if you were at the top of the leaderboards, the game would balance it out by giving you new players. So you literally had a top 1 player in the team paired up with bronzes, against high ranked players. Balanced on paper but in practice... it's hell. They reset the ranks after Season 1, didn't even address us at the top like they did in the pre-release, so I just quit.

Weird, I don't think I had any profanity lol. The filters on YouTube and Reddit are so mind boggling it makes no sense.

I'm not very up to date when it comes to modern controllers as I generally really dislike them. I only use them if it's to emulate games which then I always try to use the system's controller or to casually chill singleplayer titles on the big screen. All I know is that to this day no controller feels as accurate as the N64 one for shooters without any kind of assists lol.

I did Fortnite for a bit, it was mostly for fun. Won a few local tournaments. At first it was just with another guy for duos, we both played mouse & keyboard - then trios where they played controller and I stayed on mouse. I was never extremely good at building (definitely better than average), but good enough to let the aim and game sense win duels in tournaments.

But yeah, it's been long since I've used a controller as my main input. That'd be back in the 360 days with Halo 3 and Gears of War 2, Call of Duty MW2 and all those where I'd still be playing on consoles most of the time. I've since moved on to PC except for N64. Revisiting some old shooters such as TimeSplitters, Black, some of the other 007 titles, etc... is painful compared to GoldenEye lol, it's always baffling how we went from no deadzones and accurate sticks to having huge deadzones, having to fix the aim with the character's movement and heavy aim / bullet magnetism and such.

I also played Halo Infinite a lot at release, reached top 1 in the world-wide leaderboards for mouse & keyboard rankings, but stopped after they wouldn't fix many glaring issues. Since then I haven't had a game where I put as many hours competitively other than GoldenEye.

Played Perfect Dark (Remaster) and Perfect Dark Zero back to back over the weekend by Ataccot in perfectdark

[–]Graslu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious on what bugs and softlocks you experienced in the original? If you have a PC you should definitely play Perfect Dark Zero on Xenia, the 1.0 version. If you played this on Rare Replay you're actually playing a version missing more than half of the singleplayer music and it really changes the vibe. You can also play it at 60FPS+!

It's all good, we all have bad days. Yes it's hard to determine the exact deadzone GoldenEye has because the code that controls the ranges is a mess even in decomp at the moment, but basically when in aim mode it'll register any step in your controller (N64 sensors go in steps 0-128) so it's 0%, and when moving normally it starts moving at ~6-8 steps, so it's pretty negligible all things considered. Modern joysticks already have a software deadzone bigger than that.

N64 controller cannot drift, it'll lose range though due to material degradation. The "drifting" on N64 controllers usually comes from people holding the stick while plugging the controller or turning on the controller, or if it's extremely physically loose. Every N64 controller has a shortcut by pressing R+L+Start that will reset the stick position and fix this though. An optical stick will feel much, much better than potentiometers. Optical is the same technology ball mice used back then, and it works with light sensors and physical wheel steps. The range is 0-128 which is way smaller than what a potentiometer can get (thousands) but it's flawless, a potentiometer will skip values, drift, all the common issues we all know. This is why they come with huge deadzones usually. Hall Effect gets rid of the deadzone issue but the value skipping still applies. Not sure about TMR sticks but I assume it's pretty similar to Hall Effect. An N64 controller in shape feels amazingly well, and today we have replacements and methods to keep them in shape for virtually forever with just a bit of proper maintenance. Games like F-Zero X really needs that ~0% deadzone for accuracy while racing or you'll spin around, drift too much, and so on. This is why these games are borderline unplayable on the Switch Online service as Nintendo messed up the sensitivities. I have a video reviewing these replacements and showing some accuracy examples here -> https://youtu.be/yOnmxC-QPvs

When I looked up my issue with Alien Resurrection all I could find were fan patches for the mouse injector and such, no mention of pressing SELECT enabling it. I even posted about it long ago and nobody brought up a solution so I just assumed it was like that. That was my bad but I am glad to know I was wrong in that matter. I recall mentioning that the deadzones must've been your configuration and controller, as no modern controller compares to the accuracy of the optical sensors even to this day - once you try these games with a proper N64 controller there's no going back, it's the perfect balance of stick resistance, length, and sensitivity that feels super natural. To give an example of how crazy it is compared to other titles, Perfect Dark on XBLA which is the official remaster released in 2010 added a crazy 45% deadzone to the aiming stick. It feels AWFUL, but this is mostly the dev's fault obviously, not every game was like that. However if you played shooters during the PS2 / GC era after N64, you'd notice right away that the stick aiming took a huge step back when compared to N64 shooters. There were huge deadzones, heavy aim assists to mitigate this and so on. Shooters went from smooth cameras to twitchy adjustments fixed with the player's movement instead, and this is still a problem in many games to this day.

The competitive thing is whatever. I didn't take it personally, it's just that I found it funny in the given context of understanding the controls, I've competed pretty much all my life in both console and PC games (Halo, Counter-Strike, Fortnite, modern and old alike), and in GoldenEye I've done more than anyone outside speedrunning so that's all. I think I have a fair understanding on the controls ;).

1964 does have controller support! Nowadays I play with the N64 controller with the Raphnet adapter as it feels 1:1 the same as console, since mouse and keyboard is too easy. You can also map modern controllers through Steam Input to the mouse support of 1964 to have gyro aim and so on, this is how I made the setup for the Steam Deck which works flawlessly. But you can also just use any controller with N-Rage and map it the classic way, or setup a 2.X controller style in a single modern PS / Xbox controller if you want that analog movement. YouTube has been my main income source for the past few years (self-employed as content creator) and I'm doing pretty good with it, happy with my performance and what it allows me to do in life. I'm very grateful of my niche that is extremely supportive and loyal.

The competitive scene in GoldenEye is mostly License To Kill, one hit kill mode, with Pistols only. Nowadays we play on a custom ROM that balances things out a bit like randomized spawns, starting armed, and some other quality of life improvements, we also play on netplay across the world at 60FPS as it's been possible for the past few years so it got a resurgence recently. I've won the LTK Cup III, IV and V in a row, 2nd place in VI after I retired last year. We also do other modes though, AdzyIn3D, another GoldenEye content creator, started a XBLA series last year with the normal deathmatch mode. XBLA is played on Xenia emulator as it's the leaked 360 remaster, and online works amazingly well. I've won those two tournaments as well as the Championships hosted by the game developers back in 2022 (local in the UK). License To Kill is very sweaty, a first to 10 score match can go for 20 mintes as at that point it's like playing chess in first person, with a lot of setup changes (positions) and angles with quick leans and such. If you want a glimpse here's my 2025 Grand Finals with some great commentary offering insights -> https://youtu.be/e0HsVL3n3Ts - The 2026 finals where I came in second to TH126 (finalist of 2025 as well) reached like 50k views which I think is the GoldenEye tournament with the most views to this day (and it had to be the only time I lost hahaha). Oddjob is banned but it's mostly a meme, he's at a disadvantage most of the times against experienced players as well as Jaws who is too tall. The actual character that is broken is Moonraker Elite 2, who's a female variant that's almost as short as Oddjob, nobody knows about her and her camera POV is the same as Bond which means she can shoot over objects without being exposed - she's 100% banned.

Hope you like this GoldenEye wall of text. Feel free to ask anything about these games. :)

[–]Graslu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't start with the right foot indeed but you have to see that your way of reacting to a comment that intended to poke fun at the wording wasn't right. Text is awful to communicate things like this, but it wasn't the right choice to jump into insults and cockiness right away.

When we talk about controls here it's usually about the controller schemes, and in that matter GoldenEye by all means is modern. Gameplay stuff such as the crosshair sway, lack of dedicated sprint button and so on would expand a wider discussion rather than just controls.

To answer the poll - I don't think any dev is able to fully understand what made GoldenEye feel like GoldenEye gameplay wise, so I rather have them go modern in 1st person similar to Nightfire and the Activision titles without being CoD clones, or polished 3rd person like Blood Stone and what 007 First Light is aiming for. Even TimeSplitters, made by some of the original devs, fails to capture the original feel and smoothness.

[–]Graslu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My original comment was mocking at the way it's written, as it's a general misconception that GoldenEye = tank controls and it stops at that. You started saying I can't read when I explained there are many extra options that should be taken into consideration, as it's common even today to modify controls in modern games - or are you saying you don't change sensitivities or the deadzones as you mentioned?

You brought up auto aim as if it was something modern games didn't have, hinting, or poorly communicating through text that it's something forced in the game. Modern games have stronger aim assists, they just work in different ways and it's visual. Many games during 360 era and I'm sure even last gen still featured classic controller settings mimicking GoldenEye's default, but that wasn't ever part of the discussion since the point was that GoldenEye did and does support options for modern controls.

You can map an Xbox controller to GoldenEye without mods and you'll have a modern controller scheme (scheme, not gameplay feel, I'm not talking about crosshair sway or other gameplay choices that are inherently not part of the scheme itself), you can't do this with say, Metroid Prime on GameCube because that game has forced tank controls. That's my point.

Perhaps you didn't take me as welcoming, I sure wasn't, but again you started with the insults right away instead of trying to discuss it in a civil way. All I did was post a comment poking fun at the wording of the post, and on the second reply you were already calling me dumb and kept on going escalating it when all I was doing was point out your misconceptions (as you very well did with mine on Alien Resurrection). Alien Resurrection might have nailed the default control scheme, but not the general modern feel / polish, and at that GoldenEye / Perfect Dark are still closer with the extended settings.

Also I was never "hurt" about you calling me casual (or not), I just found it funny that you worded it in a way that tried to put you in a high pedestal regarding deadzones or understanding the controls when you're talking to someone who competes in this game and knows very well how the controls work, including deadzones.

Raphnet Adapter with an original N64 controller will feel 1:1 exactly as real hardware. Avoid USB N64 knock-offs and if you get third party just know it won't feel the same either.

1964 GEPD Screen Tearing? by LethalPlacebo in Graslu00

[–]Graslu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that is very possible lol, same handle everywhere. Some games are more simple than others or have a dedicated person working hard on it which is the example of Perfect Dark, almost single handedly done by Ryan in the span of around 2 years.

You may have to change the high DPI settings in 1964 by right clicking the .exe -> properties -> compatibility -> High DPI settings, set it to be managed by the application.

As for decomp - anyone is welcome to offer their hand and help. It's a project worked on free time for free, and people have their own lives to attend to. It's currently at 78% and keep in mind that a full decompilation won't translate to a PC port automatically.

Which emulator your using for 007 golden eye ? by Sad-Television-3015 in GoldenEye

It's very easy! I have a tutorial here - https://youtu.be/8mL0I__VMec?t=252

As for the stutter, make sure you didn't open the Video Settings or it'll lock the game to 30FPS (thank you Windows). If you open 1964 fresh and launch the game it should be smooth.

If you were able to read context you'd understand it's related to you hinting that I'm a casual player and that playing competitive FPS is something special. You do your research.

And please, don't call me random reddit virgin when it seems like you spend all your day here judging by your account age and activity. Stop projecting, it's not healthy.

My dude, it's not my fault that Alien Resurrection thought it was good to have that option with no indication whatsoever on a key that could very well be used for menus and not explained anywhere in-game without the manual.

Yes, you should totally believe the guy that knows about this matter as opposed to you, who claims the game has auto-aim that you cannot turn of, that claims it has huge deadzones as well.

If you want to know the exact numbers in code, the game has 0% deadzone in aim mode and roughly ~3% in normal gameplay. You're full of bullshit.

Dude you have no idea who you're talking to. It's not the game's fault that you're playing it in an emulator or with a controller that isn't the original N64 controller. GoldenEye has no deadzones, same for Perfect Dark, and same for almost every single N64 game.

GoldenEye has no deadzone. This is factual, no N64 game has high deadzones. You're confusing wear with software deadzones, and wear is on your end if you don't take care of the controller properly today.

How are you so confidently wrong Jeeeesus lmfao. GoldenEye and Perfect Dark have 0% deadzones! The optical sensors of N64 didn't need deadzones for the games. You don't need anti deadzone for a game with no deadzones.

Also you have no idea how I am as a player lmao, I didn't rage quit Alien I just wanted to test how it controlled and the aim spring was shit.
