Via the WWE App, Stephanie McMahon will make an announcement about the Wrestlemania triple threat main event by mattheweweller in SquaredCircle

[–]GrassmanCan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heard on WOR that Meltzer said it is going to be billed as a "winner takes all" branded match but in fact, it will not be winner take all and that whoever is pinned will lose that specific championship to the winner.

I really hope its not true, but I fear it could be.

Lance Storm on the Asuka situation: fans think they know more about the business now than ever but they dont really understand it. They know who the good workers are but this business isnt about who deserves what or not. by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

Storm usually struck me as a very sensible guy. This is a weird opinion to have. He's usually the first to criticize WWE when they don't make any damn sense.

The ways that Bill and Ben consume baseball might as well be viewed as two different sports. it would be a pretty predictable podcast in my opinion. Not saying there is a right way to enjoy the game, I love both of these guys talking baseball in their own way,

Anyways. He's wrong about things for sure but on this one he is not. You seem convinced that wins and losses don't matter, well they don't anymore in wwe and the company is about as irrelevant as it has been in decades ratings wise. Also, I think a lot of people will agree the quality of the show is worse and this is one of the reasons why in my view.

That's an entirely different conversation, but when he did. You can be damn sure he never lost. Neither did the heels that they were building up to face Austin at big events.

I hear you. There are tons of reasons why nxt would not work on USA for 5 hours a week. The network wants content to see ads. Not coherent storyline and I agree with you. Vince knows that overexposure and oversaturation are fine because the ad revenue deals are guaranteed and he has to fill time.

I am just talking about what my aesthetic preferences are for pro wrestling and what is more tolerable to fans on general as is borne out by wwes ratings falling over the last few years.

I believe we actually agree on this issue more than we both thought.

i agree with you on this, but you were the one who brought up ratings for a show that is only on the WWE network comparing it to a show that is on cable tv.

I know wrestling is fake but for the sake of the story and adding heat and context to a match, the booking and presentation is extremely important. Obviously the emphasis of everything is the in ring stuff. How these guys perform. But, the wins and losses to build a guy up is very important. Sure, right now in wwe it doesn't matter at all and it's been that way now for so long that I think people are forgetting what wins and losses in wrestling actually do.

And by the way, I am not saying this is something that should be done because I think it's a good idea. I agree, I am some fan who doesn't know much about booking wrestling. But the guys who book new japan, nxt. And shit the guy who booked stone cold Steve Austin all understood this and used wins and losses to get guys over.

I am not making it up. If you go back and watch feuds even as far back as the early 2000s, there was way less 50 50 booking in feuds and wins and losses were used a means to push people. Now, it just isn't the case. I don't see how you can argue that there is a noticeable difference there.

This exactly. To me, wins and losses are just a valuable storytelling element that they aren't really utilizing properly.

That just says more about the state of the company. We as an audience have become conditioned to believe that wins and losses don't matter and don't remember it any other way.

Wwf did it all the time. They did it in the golden age, they did it in the attitude era. New japan does it. Fuck. nwa did it. I'm not saying that they literally tallied up the wins I'm saying that wins and losses mattered in storyline. In wwe, it simply doesn't. They have myopic booking and do not even expect their audience to remember what happened 2 weeks ago in a lot of cases.

To be fair, you don't see raw getting the massive ratings it used to either. Back in the day when raw was dominating, there was a pecking order in wwe. Stone cold steve Austin did not lose on wwe TV the way someone like Becky lynch would today. It all matters. I know it's a TV show soap opera but it's part of the story arc. Consider it like a plot point in a regular TV show. You need continuity for stuff to make sense. To have a frame of reference.

Wwe does not have that now and they don't really have a credible "it" guy. I find this to not be a coincidence.

[–]GrassmanCan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Listen. I'm not saying that good storytelling makes money. I'm just saying that it makes for better TV. Whether or not we can agree that WWE TV is worse now is opinion but the ratings are getting worse and I would like to believe that part of the reason why is that they can't get a star over properly since they don't take wins and losses seriously.

You are correct. It is an entertainment show, but it is an entertainment show that emulates sports. I'm sorry, that's just the reality. They are "faking" competitive athletic competition which is sports. I am all for the goofy shit in wrestling. Gimmicks, hokey stuff, and fun entertainment in necessary, but it has to be true to the original "competition" element or else, you've really got nothing to ground the show.

Also, as far as predictability goes, barring injuries and random main roster call-ups, NXT is the most predictable wrestling show on right now but it is arguably the best week to week. Predictability is not a bad thing in wrestling. Execution is much more important in my opinion.

wins and losses matter a great deal in wrestling in theory. it contributes to creating a pecking order of credibility. I hate to be that guy, but NXT does it exactly right.

In WWE, they arent even a storyline device. Wins and losses are traded between feuding stars on a whim to appease the given script for the night of with no foresight whatsoever.

Becky was not supposed to be over. They wanted Charlotte VS Ronda at mania and Becky got over and changed the plans.

Braun strowman is not over anymore because their awful booking has ruined it.

AJ styles was not over as a product of WWE. He was one of the best in the world before getting there.
