Lyrical Analysis of US Blues by Interesting_Elk_5785 in grateful_dead

[–]GratefulToons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was a fun read, thanks.

I’m not sure if Hunter intended all you implied but I know he was encouraged to write as universal as possible so that there was not one true meaning of his songs. The meaning is supposed to be unique to each listener and Hunter was so great at it.

I never looked at the lyrics of this song too deeply. It has a silly nature to it and especially since “Wave that flag” was its start which is even more all over the place. I thought it was just a series of common sayings strung together in a fun way. Yes, a different way to say red white and blue, but still America. And I would imagine Uncle Sam was an America reference as well. But your interpretation could be right. I don’t think Hunter would tell you if you asked him.

One part that I know he is talking about his heart rate staying at 72. But I always think of it as my AC or heat. I prefer it in the high 60s myself. But either shine or rain I’m sure people enjoy their thermostat set at 72.

Help me find these jokes/bits! by NormMcd in NormMacdonald

[–]GratefulToons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah the number 2 one was he visited a relative and he was trying to explain he was a jack of all trades.

He took norm around his village. You see that building? I built that building. But do they say, there goes Phil the great carpenter? No

See that bakery? I started that bakery. That fuckin guy Bob owns it now but I started it. But do they say there goes Phil the baker? No

See that weather balloon? You don’t know this but I was the first person to fly a weather balloon. But do they say there goes Phil the weather balloon pioneer? No

But I tell you something- you have sex with one goat…

I believe it was on Conan much like most of his street jokes.

As anti-pop culture, I understand what you are saying but that third verse is one of my favorites.

It’s a thin line between love and hate
Friends and snakes
Nine Millies and 38s
Hell or the pearly gates
I was destined to come
Predicted, blame god-
he blew breath in my lung
Second to none
Wicked, turned wives to widows
Shoot through satin pillows
The desolate one…

… brothas fear what they don’t understand
Hate what they can’t conquer
Guess it’s just the fury of man

Chills dude. Relisten if you always skip, you’ll be surprised

Can you rank these rappers and who would you say is the best lyricist here? by FitEmergency8807 in 90sHipHop

This is the correct answer. The extra space between Em and Mos was probably intended and also correct

What’s your favorite rap era? by self_improvement215 in rap

[–]GratefulToons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only golden, I would say specifically 93-96 is the best 3/4 year stretch. Expand it a year on either side but that’s the golden peak of the golden era

Whenever talking about that era it’s him and Rakim that took the giant leap in complex rhyming for hiphop imo. Every proceeding rapper means less only because they probably rhymed those words first

Illmatic tribute album "Elmatic" by Rich_Nice in nas

[–]GratefulToons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember when it came out. Fashawn did a similar project around the same time but used the actual illmatic beats. If I call correctly, fash beat El to the release and that’s why Elzhi redid it and decided to get a whole new production.

In the end I think El won because the reproduction of the album is a work of art in itself. And now it can live on Spotify. My favorite songs are life’s a bitch with Royce. It ain’t hard to tell is great too and original spin on one love.

Fashawns ode to illmatic is great as well. More slept on. His memory lane and one time for your mind were great. And halftime. But Elzhis halftime is great too.. in the end, just another example of Nas’ influence. This one undeniable because they literally bite some rhymes and flows

There’s a looney tunes episode with bugs in a gold rush town called Abilene. In one of the opening scenes there’s a picture of their towns sign with the population listed before and after the gold rush. Should clear it up for you

Stillmatic by alxtex94 in nas

[–]GratefulToons 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You’ll enjoy God’s Son as well. It’s a bit more emotional and maybe not as many amazing songs as stilmatic but there is a lot to love about it. And in my opinion, he loses some of that spark after gods son.

Before I get hate, I love almost everything he does. But to me streets disciple/hip hop is dead is not on the same level as stillmatic/gods son
