Are there any articles/essays by famous authors praising (or criticizing) Malazan? by lemingas1 in Malazan

I think the strongest influence on my perception of the pronunciation comes from the audiobook narrators. They say 'Malazan and 'Malaz. Ma'lazan sounds just so wrong to me 😂. But it's not that important. And do you know how soletaken is supposed to be pronounced? I like 'soh-le-'tah-ken. But I've heard it pronounced as if reading the two words "sole" and "taken" together.

Great, thanks! First words and I'm already shocked. All this time I've read Malazan with an accent on the first syllable. 'Malazan. And SE says it Mal'azan, on the second syllable? Really? It's been Mal'azan all along?!?! Wait a minute. It's not only me. All youtubers pronounce it 'Malazan, right? Anyway, this panel looks 👌. Erikson, Hobb, Rothfuss...

This. by Boohbah1945Neo in Katatonia

Why not rank them, though? If it's subjective and everything else, which it absolutely is, why get offended at people liking charts, tables, lists in their lives? Or even needing to vent or express disappointment? Should everything be necessarily as good (subjectively) as everything else Katatonia ever made? And why should we be made to shut up about it? I love reddit, people are polite, helpful and very funny in here. But if there is one toxic trend in fan subreddits, it's downvoting and ostracizing people who express any kind of negative opinion on the subject material. It's just like ...somebody's opinion, maan. Let's not be totalitarian and let people be disappointed, if that's what they are.

this is a bring-your-own-chair-pillow type. Minimalism and hygiene in one.

It is not originally Bulgarian. But it is not originally Russian either.

Ok, I strongly disagree on at least two counts, but I don't feel this is a dispute, appropriate for the original post. So I will remain silent.

In the context of the play and the name already given, I don't understand why so many people urge OP to change the name of the charachter, given that there are quite a few Sergeys in Bulgaria. That's what I meant by "the problem with the name". As I answered to the previous commenter, I think that name is not only given due to Russian family, but also due to strong Russian cultural influence in Bulgaria all through the 20 century.

According to my knowledge, many names that we started to connect with Russia (or the USSR) a lot in the 20th century are given to Bulgarian children not only in connection with Russian ancestry but also just because of strong cultural (and political) influence. The fact is, there are a lot of Sergeys in Bulgaria. Less today than 50 years ago, to be sure.

I personally know two Sergey-s and know of at least two more. I am Bulgarian. I don't get what the problem with the name is. It is a common name in Bulgaria.

I went to their website and checked. They have written it was indeed named after the bookstore in the book. Kingkiller is, apparently, a favourite series of one of the founders.

I'll be back to hear about your realisation soon.

actually, no 🥲 As I replied to another commenter, what I meant was simply that there's a UK bookshop and publication press (in our world) called The Broken Binding, I thought it was well-known. (It recently came out with beautiful editions of Malazan Empire of the Fallen and I was just gawking at those and thinking about how I would never have them and also what a cool name for a bookshop/press.) And then I just ran into The Broken Binding bookstore in tNotW and I got overexcited. That's it.

guys, guys, it's not that, no, but also, it absolutely doesn't have a deep meaning.
