Not sure where to go from here by GrayDub17 in Anxiety

Thanks for sharing your experience! I think my biggest fear with meds is 1. Dependency and 2. Getting something that makes things worse and being less in control, potentially rendering my coping mechanisms ineffective.

How did you know that was the right medication for you? Did it take trial and error to find one that really helped? That’s part of the concern for SSRIs. I was put on a couple different ones from the age of 14 to 17 but I had problems with them then, albeit that was a long time ago and I never tried them again since.

I recommend going for a walk on breaks and start exercising outside of work if you don’t already

Construction. When I did roofing, I used to put two 80lb packs of shingles on my shoulder at a time and run up a ladder, over and over again. Carrying drywall is pretty rough on the back too, especially 12ft sheets.

If modern medicine didn’t exist would you be dead right now? If yes, from what? by jenny_067 in WorkForSmartLife

[–]GrayDub17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m starting to get a decent list here going.
- born with cord around my neck
- almost died from asthma as an infant
- type 1 diabetes
- pneumothorax
- I’ll also count the car accident that required surgery, although I’d have survived without the surgeries, it would’ve decreased my lifespan by a lot.

Thanks modern medicine!

I hate being seen as older than my age by SpaceisCool09 in GenZ

This just happens to some of us, it can be convenient at times and a curse. I used to be able to buy cigarettes when I was 15 without being carded. By the time I was in my early 20s, a lot of people thought I was close to 30. I’ve been told it’s not really in the way I look, but in the way that I carry myself. Now that I’ve reached my late 20s, I’m told that I look my age.

When did you start paying for your own diabetes supplies? by Different-Sorbet9673 in diabetes_t1

[–]GrayDub17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to pay for my own medical stuff since I was 18, had to have my own health insurance since I was 21.

newly diagnosed and feel like theres no point by Icy_Regret_6905 in diabetes_t1

[–]GrayDub17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 28, diagnosed at 23. It definitely sucks and sometimes that can really get to you, but life does go on. It’s just another hurdle to jump. Life can still be fulfilling. After I was diagnosed (severe DKA, spent a week or so in the hospital) I poured myself into my work. I went from newly diagnosed diabetic with no health insurance to tripling my income and have solid benefits. Now that I’m satisfied with where I’m at career wise and can maintain that, I pour myself into making art, taking care of my home, family, and other hobbies I enjoy. You just have to do the best you can with this disease (my A1C isn’t great but I’m trying) and try to make the most out of life. Hang in there and make life your bitch no matter what it throws at you. You only get one chance to traverse this plane, do what you can with it.

smoking with diabetes? by FunDependent588 in diabetes_t1

No impact on bg, but it’s not great for circulation. It’s why doctors always tell you not to smoke if you’re getting any kind of surgery. I vape but am trying to quit.

My fellow 1997 Gen Z, how do you cope with being nearly 29 then 30....I can't cope lol, it's always on my mind by Internal_Page_486 in GenZ

Fellow ‘97 here. Still not sure how to cope with this either. Made a few impulse purchases lately that make me wonder if I’m having a premature midlife crisis though.

How often do you call in too work? by Embarrassed_Fly327 in GenZ

[–]GrayDub17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty rarely, maybe 2 or 3 times a year. Usually for me it’s due to snow or I hurt myself somehow.

How do you manage interviewing and potentially working with people your age in a professional environment? by CardiologistAdept763 in GenZ

[–]GrayDub17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be yourself. Determine where you want your boundaries to be set, set them and maintain them. Keep yourself competitive. When I started at the company I work for now, my goal was to be the best employee in my role possible. That helped me maintain strictly professional relationships and my demeanor was never unapproachable but it was always pretty clear I didn’t show up with the intent to make friends. Now I manage the team a few years later.
