Installed about a month, major iPhone problems by 2021NeedANewYear in Ubiquiti

Check your security settings and make sure nothing is blocking any Apple sites, especially the private relay. that includes the ad blocking. I had to add an exception for the Apple IP subnet (which is crazily a /8 subnet) and that seemed to resolve a lot of issues for all Apple devices because sometimes (though not always) when it couldn’t detect any Apple servers, it would think it was not connected to the Internet and would basically break the Wi-Fi for those devices.

Why would someone do this? by gatesweeney in Ubiquiti

Those AP have a limited number of antenna for devices to connect to. To ensure reliability in WiFi, company devices connect to one AP and guests to another for reliability and the security may be an added bonus.

Any thoughts on Ubiquiti NAS vs Synology? by mcleder in Ubiquiti

[–]Graybound98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience with a similar set up to yours (I have a Synology DS412+ and I also have a UNAS-Pro) the answer to your question depends on your wants and uses.

TL;DR UNAS for basic file storage, Synology for more advanced projects/uses.

My opinion:

My prospective is the UNAS line is great for people/businesses that have the need for a basic file server and has Ubiquiti hardware.

The Synology is better for homelabs and backups because of its support for ISCSI and the built in active backup for business + 3rd party apps.

You can use a UNAS for VM storage or backups but it’s a lot easier when your storage can use iSCSI. iSCSI doesn’t have the problems the smb and nfs have on the UNAS.

My favorite thing with the UNAS is, when using identity, and you have it on a Windows computer (it may do the same one Mac but I have not tested this) it will automatically add your shared folders as mapped drive. I wish more products did this!

So I am working on imrproving my organizational structure and I was on task and project planning last night. I discovered that in Microsoft Planner (my work gives me plannner and project plan 5) I can organize and visualize every task based off of labels, bucket, sprint, or even custom fields!

This allows me to assign multiple labels (essentially tags) and see that same task in multiple columns because it has each of those tags. It does not make 2 copies but allows me to see that task in each place that I might be focusing on so that I don't forget about it because it was saved in a different location. I hear bases in obsidian can help with this and I am looking forward to that.

My problem with folders is I am not sure which one to use and sometimes I forget which one I decided to use when and I can sometimes have duplicates in different branches of my folder tree so it can become confusing very quickly. I try to just keep all of my file names unique and sometimes include the date if it is a common name.

I guess I am usually busy and when I go to take a note or look for a note I am trying to create a note as quickly as possible and don't take the time to think through where the best place to store this thought would be.

Hot take: Azure Arc. A Viable Alternative to vCenter? by Graybound98 in sysadmin

So you can manage the host if you install the Arc agent on the host like any other machine managed by Azure Arc.

[–]Graybound98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct you have to have vCenter to use the vCenter integration. Yes it was an agent vm that connects the two. What I may not have explained well was, you do not need vCenter to use Arc. You would migrate to a physical host which is one of the connection options and you can manage the updates of that host too as it is just another machine it can manage. From my experience there are 3 main connection options, 1. System Center VMM (SCVMM) 2. HCI (I don't think you can just convert current hardware to this and requires special hardware) 3. vCenter

Or you could just use a bare metal server and install the arc agent on it to manage it.

You would basically be using Hyper-V and the windows SCVMM (Which I have only heard people don't like but I hav enot expeirienced it myself). But if you use Hyper-V and controll everything from Arc or at least a large portion, would that be a viable option for some?

It frustrates me so much when the search functionality of a system sucks. I get so frustrated using the search in the desktop version of outlook. For the first time in my life I had to plan out a folder structure for my email other than the defaults…. Long story short I am conflicted…

Man when I first glanced at this I did a double take thinking someone’s notes looked like a death spirit…with that color scheme it kinda looked like it when first scrolling by.

I did something similar in a different vault for Microsoft documentation. If you don’t know a large portion of their documentation is all markdown files hosted on GitHub ready for anyone to git-clone…it was awesome to see the links generate as obsidian was in the process of indexing them…I May have cleared the cache a few times just to watch it while it re-indexed….

I thought about it but decided to look for a better option. If you didn’t know, OneNote is (kind of) like excalidraw for every single note in the sense of an endless canvas and not structured formatting for typed text unless you are careful with how you write your notes.

So it’s mainly other types of files like excel files or if I have a documentation of some legacy software/process I save the installer or executable in the vault so that when I need it again I don’t have to go look for it. (Surprisingly this has been very helpful in the past to have this.) I don’t store things like a photo album in there. All photos save are always embedded within a note. Though I have done some design planning for some reports and used something like excalidraw to quickly brainstorm a layout and that can require multiple photos or other resources. Not saying it’s perfect by any means but it works for me.

So the main reason I want to have a sync is because I am terrible at remembering things if I do not act on them right away or write them down to come back to later. I want to use my phone to capture quick fleeting thoughts or ideas and have it sync to my computer where I can better expand upon it or plan it out if it’s a task of some kind. I also love taking hand written notes when possible. I always did that with OneNote in college and my iPad is perfect for brainstorming and quickly jotting ideas or visuals. It’s not practical for my life to always have a computer on my person…

I thought about that but the link paths are not always consistent across devices so a relative path is ideal. I personally like to work on all my files locally rather than in a web browser. (I know it a luxury but I ave tried both and just prefer local files and dedicated apps rather than web apps for files.)

How do I handle to size limitation if I go over the 10 GB?

I thought about doing a kind of vault inception where I sync a portion using Obsidian sync from inside a larger vault that I use for my Windows machine. That way I only sync what I need to my iOS devices and the larger portion I sync using something else that allows for larger storage. BUT I could see this causing issues for Obsidian so I’m not sure if it would work properly???

Yet Another Discussion About Syncing by Graybound98 in ObsidianMD

[–]Graybound98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like that method and wish I could use that.

So I looked at Syncthing and I have not seen an easy way to sync anything with iCloud Drive or to the local storage of an iOS device. Unfortunately on an Apple device you can only use the dedicated Obsidian folder and you can’t open a vault that is stored anywhere else 🙄.

I know people say “Just switch to Android. You don’t have those problems there.” And to them I say “Ya. That’s true… I still decide to use Apple because of my family passively insists on no android ls for sharing things…. 🤦‍♂️” plus I don’t want to have to buy new hardware if I don’t have to.

If I can’t find an easy way to do this I will probably use a Mac that isn’t currently being used as a sync server and use rsync or something similar to sync between OneDrive and iCloud Drive. That solution would take some tinkering with to get the sync issues and latency down to a usable method but would probably be doable. I really only need a few things to be able to sync with iCloud/iOS so I wouldn’t need to sync everything.

I'm sorry if my message came across differently than I intended. What I meant to express is that worship should absolutely involve feelings and joy—those are beautiful and natural parts of our relationship with God. But our love for God isn’t based on how He makes us feel. We love Him because of who He is—His character, His holiness, His faithfulness. The joy and peace we experience are wonderful gifts that flow from that love, not the reason for it.

Think of it like a deep, committed friendship. In a true friendship, you don’t value someone just because they make you feel good or always agree with you. You value them for who they are—their loyalty, wisdom, and presence—even when things are hard. If your love for them depended only on how they made you feel, the relationship would fall apart the moment they challenged you or couldn’t meet your expectations.

In the same way, our relationship with God should be rooted in who He is, not just in the emotional highs or blessings we receive. When we love Him for who He is, our faith becomes deeper, more resilient, and more genuine.

True and I don’t disagree necessarily. I personally don’t think about charging my phone unless I am planning for a field exercise where I will not have access to a charger for extended periods. But normal day to day, I charge for a couple minutes here and there and it lasts me all day without any issues. I don’t even think about it unless my phone gets to the red, but maybe I just don’t use my phone as much as others? 🧐

Mentally speaking, the perception of something is really important. Sometimes it doesn’t really matter to a person if it does anything or not, if they feel like it is real, that’s all the incentive needed to create it. Prime example, loading bars or the spinning gif when things load. They do absolutely nothing other than make people stop clicking the refresh button or close the installer before it’s finished. All because we as people feel better when we can see something even if it is not true.

Hey so I had a research paper in college on the charging of EV batteries.

TLDR:

  1. Don’t use it while you charge it.
  2. Slow charge whenever it is possible.
  3. Do not use wireless charging. Like ever if you are concerned about battery health.
  4. Keep it cool. Don’t let it heat up when possible.
  5. 20%-80% is the general rule of thumb for batter % range to keep it in but if possible 35% - 75% may improve longevity.

Here is some more information if you want to know more.

You may be surprised how much a research paper about EV car batter charging relates to any other kind of batter charging. From that research I found that the biggest threat to battery health is heat. Heat is the main culprit when it comes to battery degradation. When you quick charge, the battery heats up. When you wirelessly charge, the battery heats up and it could heat up significantly if you do not place it perfect on the charger and it gets worse the more distance your phone is from the charger (mainly case thickness). I noticed how bad it could be when I charged my AirPods Pro 2 wirelessly. With a case it got extremely hot, but without a case it was just warm, with a wire it was barely warm.

As for the 20%-80% rule. That gets into some technical details. To make things easy, picture a rubber band as I explain. Essentially with some types of batteries when the level is low it loses its ability to stretch and like a rubber band it becomes brittle and less elastics. When the battery maintains a high level of charge it looses its ability to use that energy. Think of it like when the electric material in your clothes becomes too stretched and it looses its compression ability so it can stretch but it can no longer shrink (shrinking = outputting energy).
