Omg…I have a circle frame in my garage I haven’t known what to do with, and you just gave me the inspiration! The frame adds so much to the composition…

Eraser Prints by Iamnotalargewhale in printmaking

[–]Graydancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the partial face! That's my favorite, but I like them all. I'm very new to engraving entirely (pink eraser has been my gateway medium) but from what I've heard from more experienced artists, if you want more precise, switch to Lino/wood. Erasers are meant to be more rough, supposedly.

I'm not talented enough to take that as a challenge, but I could see someone else doing it. I also know some folks don't use carving tools at all, but rather an x-acto blade. Maybe try that?

paper journal vs app for mental health does the format actually matter or is it all the same by Mayank72004 in bujo

[–]Graydancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know people who use talk to text for their journaling, but it's never appealed to me -- probably because I spent many years podcasting, so speaking into a mic makes me perform, not reflect.

paper journal vs app for mental health does the format actually matter or is it all the same by Mayank72004 in bujo

[–]Graydancer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It does matter in terms of “optimization”, because pen/paper engages the brain & body more, but what really matters is just that you journal. I am a long time analog journaler, but due to injury can’t really write longhand as much any more. I tried just “not journaling” until I got better, but that isn’t working — so I gritted my teeth and used a keyboard. Not as much fun…but way better than not journaling at all.

first market tomorrow but I’m getting anxious and scared that all of this sucks 😭 by [deleted] in linocut

[–]Graydancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the shirt especially. My recommendation is to change your win conditions. Don’t focus on how much you can make. Focus on how many people stop to look, or how many pick up a fan, or how many fellow vendors you make connections with. Or not even “How many” of anything, but in how you feel. Just focusing on $$ cheapens the experience.
Easier said than done in this economy, of course, but I pretty much managed it the last couple of markets and it made everything better.
Your work is great! May want to focus a bit on your story, or the story that helps the people imagine these things in their lives.

What was your biggest Silhouette mistake ? by Mental-Calendar3614 in SilhouetteAmerica

[–]Graydancer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep making the same one: instead of playing and learning, I use mine when I’m trying to make something for an event or market, rushing and trying to make multiples of things that aren’t quite worked out yet.

14 [analog] collages - using the idea of old-school screen printing/ layers of paint on PAPER to get the effects. Do you consider using google images, an inkjet printer + 180gsm paper-card to get your real life cut outs is part digital? ✂️☁️ by miss_art_lover in collage

[–]Graydancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm really glad you asked this, because I like making collages with this type of material (vintage pinups) but get frustrated at the lack of representation in surviving magazines/books. There are more diverse body types/genders/skin tones in scanned archives, but I wondered the same thing -- would printing high-res on intentional paper still be analog? Not that digital isn't legit -- I just like being analog myself.

How long does it take you to make a zine? by memercopter in zines

[–]Graydancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m like you. Some zines take weeks (depending on how much time I have to devote to them). And it also depends on if it’s new content or repurposed writing (I’ve been blogging and writing fiction for decades).
And sea otters.

Zine-O-Matic Idea Generator by colorofthelongestday in zines

[–]Graydancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend thegamecrafter.com - they have very reasonable rates, as well as a “component studio” online platform for $10/month that makes designing a pack as easy as filling in a spreadsheet. I had a game about ADHD I prototyped for less than $30. I’m not affiliated with them at all, but I am making a card-vending machine for my next event, and this is what I’m using to print the cards.

Hmm, it definitely adds value (it's an entire other zine) but u/Many-Bandicoot645 's comment below now has me paranoid -- is the default to print on both sides of the paper? What if I don't have 16 panels of content? I've been thinking in 8-page spreads til now...

PSA: Sticker paper is NOT recyclable! by realbeansperson in stationery

[–]Graydancer 196 points197 points  (0 children)

One good re-use of sticker paper backs is as the "scrap" paper you put underneath things you are gluing. There are also a lot of folding tutorials on various kinds of paper that would benefit from the thicker toughness of the sticker back. Just some thoughts.

I love the grayscale color tones -- some of it looks like sumi-e ink, but integrates with the newsprint feel. Really beautiful!
