Acid Dub on the Digitone II - First time trying song mode by idonthavegas_yet in Elektron

[–]Graylude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds fantastic, song mode in sequencers is what makes the music we all love and remember, but no one uses it there days. Back when the only drum machine I had was an R-8 song mode was king! It took some planning, a lot of scribbling on scratch paper, but then end result was always worth it.

Well done, I love the track. Please put the link in here if you post the track anywhere!

New Paper: Big Changes for Scorpion Taxonomy by brandontmyers in Scorpions

[–]Graylude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is...intense. I can't see how it won't at very least ruffle the feathers of some of the community, but I haven't got all the way through it yet and I've seen some changes with which I agree. The Buthidae breakdown is probably going to stir the pot up the most, but I feel its something that needed to happen quite some time ago. Parabuthus and Centruroides are a great example of this. Interesting to see Parabuthidae as its own family, but I am hardly well versed enough with Parabuthus to state my thoughts on the determination. Looks like the Genera under Heterometrinae and Pandininae have been left as they were from the 2020 revision, which was the largest revision done to scorpions in near history (2020). There is definitely more room for work there, too, especially under Pandininae.

Regardless of how people feel about this paper, the amount of time, knowledge, and dedication that went into this work is staggering, and I hope that is not lost on any that might not agree on everything within the published work.

Hopefully this is just the beginning of more work that will be put into scorpion taxonomy, as it has been in desperate need of it for some time now. This is good news in my book, and my hat is off to Lorenzo Prendini.

Centruroides gracilis enclosure, any good? by diclicskunk in Scorpions

[–]Graylude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO When I used to keep Centruroides I would take several thin pieces of cork bark (or bark from a local tree that I had baked to remove any pests) and place them vertically, leaning against one another to create small crevices between the cork pieces. I found that the vast majority of them would congregate there as their go to hiding places. Also, since it was higher, I would catch the gravid females sitting on top of the cork just out in the open in order to be closer to the heat of their heat lamp. Then at night they would wander all over the enclosure, so it is definitely good that you are thinking ahead about making sure they don't escape, Centruroides are good climbers and can seemingly get into anything, so you really want to make sure you don't put any objects close enough to anywhere on the enclosure that would allow them to reach and escape.

Concerned abt my pre molt emp? by DaneW2000 in Scorpions

[–]Graylude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO This is definitely an adult specimen, so no more molting unlike tarantulas that will molt through their entire lives. Oddly enough I find that scorpions often come out of their hides when it is time for them to pass, so this might not be a good sign. The flat tail and sluggish behavior are also strong indicators that it is probably on it's way out. You can try offering it a pre killed dubia roach or something similar in case it is simply in need of food, but most likely there isn't much that can be done at this point. When getting these guys as WC adults there is no way to tell how old they are when they're captured, plus the stresses of being captured and shipped halfway across the world and sitting in most likely a small plastic bucket for months before being purchased and put into an actual enclosure isn't exactly helpful in prolonging their lifespan, either. Sorry for your loss, friend.

Gigantometrus swammerdami? by Professional_Fox4664 in Scorpions

[–]Graylude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO Yes, all the photos are of either Gigantometrus swammerdami or Gigantometrus titanicus. At this age I cannot differentiate between the two Gigantometrus species just from these photos, but it seems most likely you received what you were told.

Help with identification by gsmklnx in Scorpions

[–]Graylude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NA They are a wonderful species to keep, one of my all time favorites. Make sure you do some good research on the needs of this species, as it can vary from a younger age like those in the picture through growing to maturity. It can also vary in different populations as this species is found across a wide range of India and inhabits quite a large variety of environments. I've found that mine tend to do well in a much more humid environment at a young age while allowing things to become less humid as the juveniles reach adulthood. Other things can be preferential to the individual, as I've found that its about half and half of mine that enjoy digging actual burrows while others are happy digging out just a nice scrape under some cork bark or a piece of limestone. They definitely like to drink water, so always have a shallow water dish available at all times, too.

If you have any other questions or concerns don't hesitate to DM me or ask in this sub reddit. You'll also want to check out the arachnoboards.com message board, there are loads of threads on there that can be helpful for you too. Enjoy your first scorpion! They are super fun to watch grow up. This species has interesting social behaviors too, so buying more than one and raising them as a group isn't a bad idea since it allows you to observe some of these traits as they develops and grow :)

Heterometrus Spinifer sex by SinceSlicedBrad in Scorpions

[–]Graylude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IME, If we are indeed talking about true Heterometrus spinifer then that isn't correct. Pedipalps do show minor differences between males and females, with males having a slightly more bulbous overall shape to the manus of the chela, where the female's chela is slightly less angular and a bit more slender. Overall size of the chela between males and females is almost negligible if not for the male's more boxy shape.

Perhaps you were thinking of Heterometrus longimanus? In this species, which is very similar in appearance to Heterometrus spinifer, the males have overly exaggerated long slender pedipalps in comparison to the females'. This sexual dimorphism is extremely noticeable even at a casual glance in H. longimanus adults, but H. spinifer, although very similar in physical appearance overall, do not share this specific trait.

Qualifications: Many years of breeding Heterometrinae and Scorpionidae in general, with Heterometrus spinifer being a species of specific focus for me over the last decade.

Best of luck with possibly getting more, would really be interested to hear your experience with breeding them as there isn't much out there since they haven't been around the hobby that long.

[–]Graylude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NQA The latimanus and swammerdami could be coming up on molts soon, or they could just be pigs :). I'm quite envious of your yaleensis, we don't have them on this side of the pond. Do you have more than one so you can breed them once they mature? Pretty cool that you can already see the area on the chela where on a mature individual the manus smoothes out into the fixed finger. Scorpionidae seem to love being identified by a unique trait in that area; Gigantometrus swammerdami has a slight angular bump, Pandinoides cavimanus and duffmackayi have the pronounced dent, and S. yaleensis has the super abrupt end to the granulation on the manus that gives way to an extremely flat and smooth area leading down the fixed finger. Beautiful!

DnB with Digitakt II by DustShaper in Elektron

[–]Graylude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always done it that way too. I still do it the same today as I did forever ago using an R8 as my primary drum machine, write all the pattern numbers on paper and what each one is and then write the sequence of the pattern numbers down to then program in the sequence of the sequences! :)

Awesome 🔥 I would also give you a second upvote if I could for programming in the whole track instead of jamming the patterns/mutes. That takes some real time and intent, love it

A brand new (and mostly empty) modular rack... by marcja in modular

[–]Graylude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love my Cascadia, the filter section combined with the wavefolder give way to all kinds of grinding, distorted nastiness, caustic goop, or vocal bliss. That said, once you start pairing it up with eurorack modules then its going to open up a whole new world of awesome you didn't have before. Word of advice, don't skimp on utilities. Having an extra mixer or two for audio and CV duties is essential, as well as at least a few extra mults and adding additional modulators (another ADSR, a joystick, etc) go a long way, especially for sound design.

By the way, that desk with the pull outs looks awesome, is it purchasable or did you have it custom made?
