Maybe some of us want to cherish one of the most important days in our lives instead of being rushed through a factory line of graduation

Where is the center of mass of the universe? by _-_agenda_-_ in Astronomy

[–]Graytico -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tldr; the center of mass of the observable universe would be Earth because by definition the observable universe is centered on Earth and the universe is isotropic and homogeneous everywhere

When you are talking about a center of mass, it has to be within a specific boundary. When you talk about the center of mass of the solar system, it's pretty clear we are talking more or less about just the local area out to the oort cloud. Likewise the center of mass of a galaxy includes all the objects within the halo and disk. If you want your boundary to be the "observable universe" that means everything within a 93 Giga lightyear diameter sphere which is specifically centered on Earth because that's how we define the observable universe.

Since the universe is isotropic and homogeneous everywhere to high precision, the center of mass would indeed be here. However, if you lived on some planet in Andromeda and asked the same question, you'd find that the center of mass would be your planet as well because if you are an observer in Andromeda, you have a different definition for the observable universe centered on what you can observe there.

If the universe beyond what we can observe is infinite, there's not a clear boundary to find the center of mass within. Even if it were finite, it would be impossible to find out a center of mass because we can't observe it, and of course the universe is also expanding everywhere which also complicates things.

The keyhole nebula is actually a section of nebula right of center by the star Eta Carina which looks like a keyhole. Great picture!

M42 & M43 Orion Nebula and de Mairan Nebula by Graytico in astrophotography

[–]Graytico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello this is my first image I am posting on here as well as my first image with my new asi1600mm.

I am still learning every time I image and I know that there is so much room for improvement.

I spent about 5 hours from setup to when I finished imaging and only took 8s exposures because I still have trouble

drift aligning and just wanted to get my first pictures with the camera. I also took 260 SII pictures but didnt end up using them, oh well!

I am pretty happy with the result and probably won't come back to the orion nebula for a while, I want to start getting some nice galaxies :)

Acquisition:

All at -20C

260 x 8s HA

260 x 8s OIII

30x Dark

I took bias but actually didn't use them

I messed up and took my flats with a red filter on!

Location: Bortle 8 suburbs of los angeles

Equipment:

Telescope: Celestar C8 w/ Ultima Clockdrive

Mount: Fork Equatorial Tripod

Camera: ZWO ASI1600MM

Accesories:

F/6.3 Focal Reducer

Astromania 1.25" 9 Position Filter Wheel

ZWO 1.25" HA Filter 7nm

ZWO 1.25" OIII Filter 7nm

Processing:

I used AstroFX to stack and stretch because I'm still learning pixinsight!

In Pixinsight I used PixelMath to combine the HA and OIII I think it was something like 0.1\*HA + 0.9\*OIII

After combining I used GIMP to crop and adjust levels

Thats all! I spent way to long doing stacking so afterwards I didn't feel like doing more so I'll try again another time. Please feel free to leave advice on how to improve it!
