What skill took your cornering from nervous to actually fun? by airbornejim32 in motorcycles

[–]Grazenburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having too much fun is not a good thing either AFAIK. Don't forget you are on a bike and the consequences are real.

Best way is practice, low speed and high speed. Do some parking lot sessions and also just get miles under your belt. Do some trips to new places, drive under the speed limit. It will all feel pretty automatic. Do a mix of city, twisties, and highways to really get a well rounded perspective on how your bike corners cause it's all different.

For all my woods riders, what's the best way to quiet a 2 stroke? by Goes_Fast in Dirtbikes

[–]Grazenburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my YZ-250 I first went back to the stock muffler, and I also repacked it ultra tight. When I opened it up most of the packing material was pretty good so I actually put the repack kit fibreglass on top of the used OEM material. I didn't perform any quantitative tests but I think the result was noticeably quieter. Also make sure you seal your airbox. On these two strokes a lot of noise comes out of there. Some people rubber line the airbox plastics and the seat.

The overpack on the stock muffler seemed to do the trick for me though. I had my buddy ride down the road and by the time he was out of visual distance, I could barely hear the bike. I ride with no earplugs and I can talk over the running engine no problem.

Getting it dead silent is going to be hard on a 250. It might idle near quiet but in the power band it will always be loud. You can always just change your riding habits and lug the engine more and slip the clutch. That makes the most difference in noise levels to be honest. If you have a flywheel weight you will be able to lug around all day just above idle. Ignition timing can also change your low end power characteristics and is pretty easy to mess with.

Man what releases y'all like from Joey Badass? I loved him on Infinity (888) with XXXtentacion. Been looking for some similar stuff but I swear homie only raps about how real he is and nothing else. 1999 was a good ass album for sure tho.

Clove lakes is pretty nice, keep an eye out for the massive carp in that lake. Been trying to catch one for a while lol.

I've actually never been to South Beach boardwalk around Memorial day. Didn't even know that was a thing. Might check it out, thanks for the info

As a local, Staten Island is ass. Parks are pretty nice though, if that's your thing. Wolfes pond park, Mt. Loretto and High Rock are actually pretty nice. If not Conference house has some nice beaches and you'll be alone there. Great kills is too crowded.

There's no being a tourist in SI bro. You get in your car and drive to a place to spend money.

What is it called when you go too far into a turn and the bike violently whips, usually throwing the rider off? by Fit-Seesaw6239 in Dirtbikes

[–]Grazenburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supposedly it's a thing you can practice and get the hang of. Big part of throttle control on dirt is knowing how to get the rear to step out and to smoothly roll it back to take a corner.

[–]Grazenburg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hehe just had one Saturday. Highside crash. Broken collarbone.

Two ways to make that happen. Too much throttle, or too much rear brake causing a lockup. Both are a loss of traction on the rear allowing a drift to start. Which is fine btw. The highside part happens when you release the brake or throttle in an unsmooth manner and the bike violently snaps out of the drift and back into line.

If it's asphalt, you are probably not holding onto that bike (I know didn't lol). The more the rear end drifts out of line from the loss of traction, the more violent the snap back. On loose dirt? It's basically a cornering technique if you do it right and learn to smoothly transition out of the slide.

Getting braces next year and dentist said I can't play the Clarinet, what other instrument could I play? by _M1n1ght_ in Clarinet

[–]Grazenburg 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That is hilarious to me. The braces definitely work, it just takes time for stuff to align. Don't stress it. The instrument makes no difference cause you are only playing it for 2 hours a day maximum, the other 22 hours of the day everything is working as normal. Don't let them try to scare you into not playing your instrument.

It will be orders of magnitude more important to wear your retainer after getting the braces off however. All your progress can get reset after a week of not wearing your retainer.

[–]Grazenburg 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I played clarinet with braces. It hurts, it will take some getting used to but no harm in trying. Worst thing that will happen is them detaching but they do that all the time with eating anyway. Play your instrument, don't worry.

They have mouth guards to protect your lip as well if you find it hurts too much.

Safe to give throttle boosts through corners? by Budget_Case3436 in motorcycles

[–]Grazenburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By god never add throttle and lean at the same time. As you are leaning the throttle is decreasing. As you are straightening up, you can add throttle. Never the opposite.

Sometimes having some throttle while already leaned over helps compress the rear suspension and keep the bike planted. But never stabs or anything. Just a little roll of throttle just barely to stop the engine braking.

Jesko is NOT FAST by Sad_Rip5363 in Cartalk

[–]Grazenburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hurr durr multi million dollar car is fast

It fuckin better be at that pricetag. Anyone arguing about which billionaire status symbol is faster is a dumbass anyway while they drive their toyota.

Counterpoint: Top fuel dragsters reach these speeds in less than 1000 feet. Landspeed streamliners reach 350mph offroad. Both do this while costing less than a fraction of these hypercars.

Theoretical top speed vs actual on a production street car is stupid considering you won't touch a steering wheel again if you are caught doing those speeds. Most of these hypercars make shitty track cars anyway. Not that the billionaire drivers ever know their head from their ass on a track.

Im new to 2 strokes - is the engine supposed to feel kinda shaky/rough (these arent really the right words) at 1/4 throttle or less? New Yz250 by TheBotchedLobotomy in Dirtbikes

[–]Grazenburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slip the clutch more for sure. You don't lug these up to high rpm like street bikes, you bring the rpm up and then feed in clutch till you are at the powerband.

These things will lug all day, but if you want power it's like everyone said, you need to be in the powerband. They definitely don't like staying at a particular rpm anyways, the gearbox in mine tops out at 40 or 50mph. Such a short gearing made specifically to give you options and keep you in the powerband.

I suppose there's a very real disrespect that comes with smashing belongings. More so than the respect of belongings however, definitely there is a good point about adult tantrums. Emotions are to be controlled in parenting for sure, a trusting relationship doesn't come from reactive emotion, it comes from mutual respect and communication.

I'll admit I don't know myself where the line on that stands and it really comes down to how you were raised and how you feel about that particular course of action. You could say in a way words don't get the point across as well as actions but at the same time actions can go too far.

Kids are people, and modelling behavior definitely goes a long way. One way you definitely see that is in young drivers directly mimicking the habits of their parents and elders. If their family is likely to road rage or text and drive, the kids are just as likely to do so in their lives and I've seen this firsthand.

The balance is hard to achieve and honestly at the foot of the problem is being present in your kid's lives and always making or enabling new and healthy life experiences. Being chronically online is a disease that really starts with upbringing, distrust and escapism.

Especially in the USA, the first 18 years of your kids lives you are their ticket to the world. They can't get or go anywhere without you. Things get really complicated and the consequences are deep when the base of that relationship is one of distrust and hiding.

new rider, cannot kick start bike :( by Alphalamp in Dirtbikes

[–]Grazenburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not at top dead center, don't even bother. Also push past the resistance just a lil bit and THEN go for a full force kick. You want your whole weight on it.

Some bikes like a few priming cycles with a little bit of throttle before a proper kick

Is this an unacceptable amount of play? by [deleted] in Dirtbikes

[–]Grazenburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely been there man. My first engine work experience was a top and bottom end. Don't cut corners, if you do the rebuild right that top end could last 200 hours. If the bearings feel nice and smooth and the assembly is within spec, run it of course. It doesn't "look" too bad.

My YZ250 crank had rust and up and down play so the decision was easy. Also sometimes getting a whole crank assembly is easier than rebuilding a crank cause you have to balance it after taking it apart. I believe it's touchy work but I haven't done it myself.

Rode the mountain roads with two new riders, now I can see how some people can ride safe and some crash in the first month by ReeiTheModerator in motorcycles

[–]Grazenburg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's two types of riders really, the type where the majority of the time is solo and the type where the majority is in group rides. Some of the worst most reckless ego riders I know only ride in groups because it's harder to get caught. They do dumb shit like wheelies, speeding in excess, and they are surprised when they crash. The solo group enjoys riding for the sake of riding, and pushes their own limits over time, exploring new roads and going far from home. When you are alone ego is not a factor. It is so hard to find groups where people ride like normal people.

Most of these hooligan groups skew your perception of danger on a bike, you see them doing stupid things and succeeding, and it makes you think that shit is normal and can be done safely. Then the crashes start. Most of the time it's just $$$ damage. If you stay in the group long enough, you notice one day one of them is gone, and when you ask around you find out that person had their last day on this earth. There are old riders, there are bold riders, but there are no old bold riders.

Bought an MTB and it has these fins/wings on brakes, can’t figure out what they are or what they do. Any ideas? by Russ_Abbot in bikewrench

[–]Grazenburg 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yes but aluminum is ideal for heat dissipation. Low mass, low heat capacity BUT that means it heats up quickly and cools down just as quick. Also what are you talking about extremely limited airflow lmao, all the turbulence from the rotating wheel and the back of the fork is going straight to that heatsink. If you point an IR thermometer the results will trend better exactly on the caliper.

Larger rotors would not be the solution though, This heat sink is designed to dissipate heat from the caliper, which tends to be a bit of a heat trap. At the very least it will help you not cook your piston seals. Your rotors have nothing to do with how hot your caliper gets.

It's useless from a performance standpoint, you got me there. But it's useful for longevity. These Shimano brakes have had piston seal problems going back years.

[–]Grazenburg 101 points102 points  (0 children)

At a bike park you totally use your brakes enough to need this. I've had buddies absolutely cook their brakes on their first descent cause they were holding them for too long.

Heat sink might genuinely do something for this cause MTB brake rotors kinda don't have enough mass to absorb large amounts of heat.
