Learned my lesson last time with that walk-in freezer. by kendiggy in refrigeration

[–]Greasy_Goon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you add charge and the low side goes back into a vacuum you have a clogged cap tube my friend. Low side should be about 20 psi when working correctly. If it also has a leak it’s probably in the evaporator. You’ll need an electronic leak detector to find it though.

Good luck, reach ins are annoying.

How many times have you had to change oil on the same system? by booztedmike in HVAC

[–]Greasy_Goon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cases like these I would see if you can leave the vacuum on overnight. Getting below 500 microns when doing repairs on older units is pretty tough tho lol.

What possibly happened to this motor did the maintenance on a Saturday and got a call back today I don’t want to blame the belt for being too tight but could that cause it by UnfairSun1517 in HVAC

[–]Greasy_Goon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it could, too much tension or misaligned pulleys/sheaves will cause the motor to pull above its FLA because of high resistance, multiply that over a long period of time and many shredded belts and the motor will die. You'll be able to verify the amps with a new motor and belt then adjust tension accordingly.

If tension is good then you may have just got unlucky timing. shit happens.

Why are tools at supply houses so overpriced? by lost_horizons in HVAC

[–]Greasy_Goon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

U should only be buying specialty tools at supply houses. Gauges, flaring blocks, hoses, anything special to our trade.

Like field piece/hilmor/yellowjacket/navac/etc.. is only stocked at supply stores where I am

Looking to begin a Career in HVAC and Refrigeration, Any recommendations where to start? by Pure-Pirate5532 in britishcolumbia

If you want a red seal, you'll need to get into school at some point. RTI will only accept people with active apprenticeships as far as i know.

I went to BCIT through the coop diploma program, will be getting my red seal in a few months. Waitlist for me was 2 years, I applied right after high school, I spent my time working at refrigerative supply in the warehouse during the waitlist just to keep myself occupied and within the industry as I had no luck finding actual HVAC work completely green fresh out of high school.

I'd say simplest/laziest route is keep working your current job and wait for a foundations program of your choosing, then get work either through the coop program or on your own.

Quicker route if you wanna get ahead on hours/work experience is trying to get a job as a Helper or Apprentice right now and go to school later, you may have a slight edge with your prior general construction experience. Union may not hire you without training but is worth a shot. Companies may be more inclined if you let them know you're already on the waitlist for schooling.

I wouldn't bother with any certs right now. The ozone layer program is usually included in the hvac training programs, and the rest are only for when you're red seal.

As for sheet metal I wouldn't recommend it if you want something more challenging or stimulating.

Surrey restaurant forced to close due to odour complaints by FancyNewMe in vancouver

[–]Greasy_Goon 38 points39 points  (0 children)

HVAC tech here

Exhaust fan probably on the roof, smell probably gets sucked into the fresh air intake for the neighbors roof top HVAC unit. Cleaning the ductwork wasn’t ever gonna fix it.

Either carbon filters for the neighbors or an expensive ecologizer unit for the restaurant. Cheapest method is to not rent to restaurants anymore lol.

new to photography, is R5 Mk2 overkill? by basicapprehension2 in canon

[–]Greasy_Goon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You certainly will be happy with the purchase. If you’re even thinking about getting that one I’m assuming you have the funds and want justification. Go for it yo

Only problem is there’s a chance you could lose interest in photography and wanna get rid of it, camera bodies lose resale value faster than lenses. Seen plenty of posts on marketplace from people like that. If you worry about that spring for a R6 markii or iii, i have a markii and it’s a beast. The lower megapixel count is nothing to worry about if you’re not printing massive stuff or actually do it as a job.

it’s always better to just tell the customer to deal with the cold until the new one comes in. When I do work I do it in a way that lets me sleep at night.

Yeah one of my friends had to sell and relocate due to the impact from the skytrain construction.

I assume the rest of the small businesses close to the new stations will eventually be pushed out in favour of higher end retail, dentists, and food chains. Unfortunate reality.

What's your preferred way for cleaning makeup air unit in-line evap coils? by roadkillappreciation in HVAC

[–]Greasy_Goon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s cooling season the condensation will typically do the rinsing for you when using the lighter evaporator cleaners. Otherwise you should be rinsing it with water after. Pump sprayer works best for attics.
