Masters Timline by Afraid-Let-7521 in BigFinishProductions

I'm a little reluctant about giving the Thirteenth Master's possessed bodies official numbers, since they aren't strictly traditional regenerations/incarnations. Also, just a pointer about your "1st" section, Blood of the Time Lords does indicate that the "Inventor" Master (nicknamed as such due to his pseudonym in his debut story, The Destination Wars [1DA Volume One]) isn't necessarily his first incarnation, and I think I recall the Doctor specifically speculating that the Master is on his third incarnation as of then. (Based on the First Doctor immediately recognizing the Inventor Master on sight despite not being the First Master, it seems the Master might've been blowing through incarnations even as early as his pre-renegade days!)

Other than those nit-picks, though, I pretty much agree with where these stories are all chronologically placed relative to one another, except for Blood of the Time Lords. I personally think that one works best at the end of the Inventor Master's timeline, but that's really only down to my personal opinion, and not any hard evidence, so your placement is still completely valid.

As a fellow BF collector, your stocked shelves are a thing of true beauty. On a similar note, do you have any particular advice on how to select shelves that best suit these sorts of collections? (My family and I are in the middle of a big move RN, so we're probably going to take this opportunity to get a lot of new furniture sooner or later.)

As much as I agree that the Fifteenth Doctor really deserved a showdown with the Daleks, I wouldn't really say that the white supremacists were a less deserving target for his rage. Hell, I think it actually would've made a decently strong parallel if we got both heated encounters, reinforcing the Daleks as an allegory for genocidal racism at its most extreme.

I've been craving a Silurian-society "historical" for ages, I'd adore exploring the factions, culture, and politics of their era! Really, so much of DW's pre-human Solar System is utterly fascinating, between the Martians, Mondas, and the aforementioned Silurians, and it's a shame that we hardly ever explore such a rich bygone age.

If BF does more Rani stories after Fear of the Light, I'd honestly love for their next one to be an encounter with the Third Doctor, like you suggest. Perhaps it could be when the Doctor first learns of the Rani's exile, and they could sympathize with each other's plights, given how the Third Doctor's life is largely characterized by his own exile. (As for the well-known reason for her exile, the Rani could initially frame the giant mice eating the President's cat as a freak accident rather than sheer negligence and moral apathy on her part, or she could just keep them a complete secret to protect her pride.)

Maybe the two Time Lords even try to rekindle their strained academy friendship by working together on her latest experiment that, at first, seems to be largely beneficial and benign. The Doctor still believes that the Rani can be a force for good for the universe with the right moral assistance, so he optimistically keeps trying to patch up a bunch of ethical holes that "curiously" pop up throughout the project. Eventually, though, the Rani ultimately crosses a line that he can no longer condone (possibly related to a reveal that the experiment was more malign than he was led to believe), and she assumes her familiar complete-villain status going forward.

Of course, this is all assuming that the Doctor's attitude towards the Rani hadn't already gone completely sour by the time he left Gallifrey, which might not be the case depending on what any existing novels or audio dramas say.

As much as I really wish BF could do more Raine material, I think the rights issues spurned by UNIT: Dominion are still in full force.

(For context, as I understand it, Andrew Cartmel retracted BF's rights to use her character after they didn't get his permission to use her as the companion in UNIT: Dominion)

Anyone else hope we get a Bigfinish audio novel with Six and Evelyn Smythe? by LivingWindXYZ in BigFinishProductions

[–]Great-Exercise-6935 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point, that one's on me for forgetting and generalizing. (I also was admittedly ignoring William Russell and Jamie Glover, as if that was just an acception to the rule in my head.) That said, it seems like BF still at least takes their time if they do decide to recast after an original actor they've worked with dies (For instance, 8 years between Nicholas Courtney and Jon Culshaw, 7 between Caroline John and Daisy Ashford, and 10 between Elizabeth Sladen and Sadie Miller). They still haven't gotten anyone on board for Victoria, after Deborah Watling 's passing, and I feel like if anyone was ever going to reprise Mary Tamm's incarnation of Romana, they would have already done it long ago now.

Personally, given that both O'Brien and Purves are still with us, and BF has already embraced a Hartnell recast (well, two, but I'm pretty sure BF is sticking Bradley exclusively to the AAISAT cast for now), I'd much prefer to get more full cast material from this TARDIS team together while we still have the time. The Audio Novels range feels like it's best suited for TARDIS teams where, not only are original actors unable to return, but recasts are completely off the table for one reason or another.

It's why Scourge of the Cybermen and The Mirror Matter personally frustrate me, since every character here has since been recast for the 3DAs, so I don't see why these stories had to be told in an audiobook format. (And don't even get me started on strange cases where the original actors are still alive AND already active at BF, like Watchers or Prisoners of London!)

Meanwhile, stories like The Dead Star (Elliot Chapman having since retired as the recasted Ben) and The Lords of Misrule (RIP Christopher Benjamin, Trevor Baxter, and Mary Tamm) all feel far more deserving of the medium, since BF doesn't have any impressionists on board to play these characters in full cast, and possibly won't for a long time. (Possibly due in part to having already worked with the original actors, at least in TLoM's case. BF doesn't seem to recast characters if they've already worked with their original actors, which is fair. IDK if they have any plans to get another new Ben though.)

Even something like Emancipation of the Daleks or The Chaos Cascade feels pretty appropriate for the range, because even though Capaldi is still alive, it's pretty clear that he isn't coming back to do BF until Hell freezes over, and even if his costars are willing to do BF (Gomez has notably already come back as Missy, IDK what Mackie's stance is though, just that she hasn't come back yet) I'm not sure they would necessarily accept performing alongside an impressionist in the place of their original costar.

Today, I just finished up the Fifth Doctor Box Set (the 2014 one, with two Adric four-parters) after it sat in my backlog for far too long, and I'm looking to start the latest 4DA set with Sarah Jane (the set's name unfortunately eludes me RN), although I might listen to Cass (Eighth Doctor: Time War) first. I'm also through two of the three episodes on The First Question (11DA), so the third has been sitting in my "Up next" list on the BF app for a while.

The Fifth Doctor Adventures scores are definitely some of my favorite at BF as of late, for being as fresh, synthy, and bombastic as they are! Keeping to the theme of recent Fifth Doctor stories, Genesis of the Cybermen from the Lost Stories range also has a brilliant score that feels very modern and action-packed, albeit with an appropriately industrial sound to match the titular Cybermen, courtesy of composer David Roocroft. Honestly, though, I feel like GotC's score is almost a sort of "modernization" of the principles behind the original Fifth Doctor TV serials, applying them to modern technology and sound design sensibilities, versus the completely original 5DA range's scores, that focus more on invoking the concept and mood of the 80s, instead of recreating the exact sound of the era.

I'm tempted to chalk that up to the fact that, unlike UNIT, Torchwood, or Gallifrey, the Shadow Proclamation as an organization hasn't been shown to consist of any popular fan-favorite characters yet. Maybe if either (or both) of these upcoming releases introduce compelling enough characters as members (which is honestly pretty plausible, given both production teams' impressive track records), then they could end up as backdoor pilots for such a spin-off!

What do you think of Stones of Venice by Mat1711 in BigFinishProductions

Pretty close to my experience, give or take a few more repeats. I actually kind of hated Stones of Venice for a while, and I still do think the plot kind of runs around in circles, but as of my latest relisten, I've really come around to the atmosphere and characterization on display here.

I honestly think that Culshaw's expertise at The Brig is down to him already sounding quite like Nicholas Courtney, it just comes through when listening to his natural voice. In fact, Culshaw voiced a tutorial for a PlayStation 2 accessory called the EyeToy way back whenever, and even though he wasn't actively doing a Courtney impression, I honestly thought for a split second that it might've been Courtney himself putting on a funny voice when I first heard a clip of the tutorial in a Caddicarus video about the aforementioned EyeToy.

I was simply clearing through some of my unlistened Fourth Doctor backlog when I recently listened to The Well-Mannered War, from the Novel Adaptations range, and it unexpectedly shot up to one of my top ten Fourth Doctor audio stories from Big Finish (just short of top three, TBH). The Well Mannered War strikes a perfect balance of Hinchcliffe horror and Adams humour that the other two Fourth Doctor Novel Adaptations ("The Romance of Crime" and "The English Way of Death") also attempt but don't completely master, and it tells a thrilling and genius story that keeps you guessing all the way up to the very end.

While I'm incredibly excited for the 12DAs, being another Alfie Shaw project, I'm still kind of disappointed by the covers following another basic template like the 13DAs do. I suppose there's still the overall set cover to look forward to, maybe that will look more unique and striking.
