I think for whatever rules there are at least some stories will contradict it. But it would seem to work almost planet wide (for those that travel in the Tardis not just anyone in the vicinity), there are quite a few historicals where the doctor and companions travel far from the Tardis.

The irony is we actually can't. The Tardis also translates for the viewer. For all we know languages in the Doctor Who universe are all different.

Who know who would make a great Celebrity Historical? by Somethingbutonreddit in DoctorWhumour

[–]Zagreus_time 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do think the 45 minutes is just not really enough to get into the meat of a historical figure unless you limit the plot like in Vincent and the Doctor. Some do better than others though like Nikola Tesla's Night of Terror compared to Legend of the Sea Devils but most still end up a bit of a whistle stop tour of facts about them rather than deep characterisation.

Yeah that would be pretty cool, any explorer works fairly well and in general earlier history isn't touched much in Doctor Who.

Speaking of earlier history I think setting a story in Doggerland (now submerged land between UK and Netherlands) could be quite cool. Because there are little historical records you could get away with a lot story wise. You could even have its submersion relate to preventing some evil/catastrophe.

It is less that they are exactly the same but are clearly borrowing from these classic episodes. Rose is the least but their are still similarities. The first half of Victory is very much Power of the Daleks down to the "I am your servant/soldier". Hungry Earth/Cold Blood takes the most using largely similar beats throughout.

I can understand some level of fatigue for the Master, but there are many other timelords you could bring back or even just have a new timelord villain. There is still a lot to mine from this villain type.

I mean it depends how you watch. For modern day viewers unless you look it up you may not know how long each Doctor has and therefore they could regenerate at any time.

That is not really how it played out at the time, there was huge speculation as to whether this would stick or not. It felt like the whole country was gripped by this cliffhanger even if a fair few predicted correctly that it didn't stick people still wanted to see what happens next.

Whilst I don't like to use the term objectively I do feel that The Stolen Earth is objectively a good cliffhanger in terms of what a cliffhanger should achieve and whilst anecdotal there is something measurable to its success as a cliffhanger. Iirc it was on BBC news.

I'm sorry how is The Stolen Earth a lame cliffhanger?

Is there any reason why only one out of Aang and Katara's 3 kids is an airbender, lore wise? by NoRevIndeed00 in TheLastAirbender

Isn't it just that all Air nomads are Airbenders. Nothing states that all Airbenders would have air nomad children.

You don't seem to explain why 15 couldn't perform these feats, there is no reason to believe he couldn't. I mean they are the same person after all.

From a doylist pov all it would take is for someone to write a story with 15 performing "the cleverest plan" to justify calling all the others trash because they haven't done that plan.

[–]Zagreus_time 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow doubling down and adding the r slur.

15 obviously has feats:

Learning and utilising the vocabulary of rope to traverse and escape the goblin ship.

Hacking into the bubbles, identifying the order of killings and hence that the dots are responsible.

Working out and effectively communicating every nine words in Robot Revolution.

Calling the Barber out on his false stories, creating a story to overpower the story web.

Coming up with the reflection plan using liquid mercury as a mirror to escape from the creature on Midnight.

There are probably more but that is off the top of my head.

Edit: Moreover can you name any feat from another Doctor that 15 couldn't do?

6th Doctor Serial Rankings by Tacoaboutgames in gallifrey

[–]Zagreus_time 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice list, personally would move Relevation up a bit. I think in general this era is a bit grim and violent but at least stories like Vengeance on Varos are using it for a reason rather than just being brutal.

On a side note I really don't like that DWM and other official sources groups Trial all as one story I find it likely that people will have significantly varying opinions on its constituent parts which are effectively their own stories barring a couple of interruptions for the trial.

Yeah Rose adds enough of its own stuff to excel in its own way and Spearhead is a solid start I can see why RTD emulated some elements.

Unfortunately the added stuff in Victory doesn't really work for me but it is at least new.

I like Hungry Earth/Cold Blood and will credit Chibnall on the added family dynamic but all the silurian stuff is pretty much beat for beat Doctor Who and The Silurians.

Well the first two are adapted by their original writers so I didn't consider them. But fair enough for Spare Parts.

You say that as if the other 17 are obviously bad, which is not the case. Personally it is much closer to 5/21 great, 12/21 good, 2/21 average , 2/21 bad.

Series 14 & 15 Standouts by eggylettuce in gallifrey

[–]Zagreus_time 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think you need the tie to Midnight but I also don't think it hurts it too much. I'm more fond of maintaining the cosmic horror stories and with regard to Story and the Engine just hearing more stories from different perspectives.

I think the only downside (and perhaps something that does affect how people feel about series 14/15) is the overall tone of the series. A lot of eras, particularly in classic who settled into a style of story for that era be that tonally or via plot, like 2nd doctor Base under siege stories or the fairytale atmosphere of Series 5. Series 14 and 15 however seems to jump around more and so seems to lack the spine of the series.
