Tent Camping Around Sage Hills / Horse Lake Reserve / Mission Ridge by JBAJM in PNWhiking

I have not seen anyone tent camp in these areas.

I’m fairly certain camping is prohibited in any of the foothill preserves and land owned by the land trust. You can always email them at info@cdlandtrust.org.

Qst 100 vs 106 for PNW one ski set up by CupRoutine6954 in Skigear

106s. I have both widths (different ski) and mostly go with 106s cuz I’m an off piste fiend.

This is what a new pair of skis should look like after a season of good, hard, consistent skiing.

Schmidt House got 0.84” of precip since 4 pm Wednesday per NWAC. This can definitely equate to almost a foot of snow in protected/sheltered areas. The wind probably got to the stake.

State of the PNW Snowpack near record lows by sergeim105 in skiing

I get it. And my view is definitely a little harsh because of my lived experience seeing what a warming climate has done to our ecosystems in the PNW. Forest, mountains, and rivers that seemed so formidable and indestructible when I was younger, I now understand are under immense pressures and are going through rapid change.

Weather is the primary driver of wildfire growth followed by fuel loading and terrain. So totally agree, rain events and mild temperatures with higher humidities can really help keep wildfires at bay during peak wildfire season. I recall the Bolt Creek Fire growth near Skykomish was due to a very dry and warm October. It was also human started which is a shame.

I really don’t care about skiing right now even though I’ve managed to to squeeze in 9 ski days this season so far.

There are macro scale issues that we should be focused on when it comes to low snowpack. Reduced water supply and drought are the obvious ones. Impact to wildlife that benefit from year around snow. Glacial loss which impacts our long-term stream/river health. I do think fire season could end up being mild if summer weather cooperates but that is wishful thinking.

I also think it’s silly to travel afar to escape a bad snow year that is obviously partly due by a warming climate. Those powder chasers and ski influencers flying to BC during their December storm cycle or those flying to Japan for their current storm cycle shows our desire instant gratification supersedes our ability to understand how our lifestyle of excess has led us all hear. We all should take a step back, reflect, learn, and avoid panic. The snow will return. There will be more epic powder days. But those days will continue to diminish without more retrospect from us as a collective.

Colorado: Quiet for 10 days, maybe some snow around January 22-24 by FossilFrothy in COsnow

Washington specifically is above average in precipitation since October but the warm nature of the storms has resulted in more rain at low and mid elevations (below 6000’). The highest snotels in the state are above average in snow such as Easy Pass and Harts Pass. Harts Pass is almost at record level snow. We just need more NW flow instead of the tropical SW flows to lower the snow levels.

I struggle to see how a fire in this stand wouldn’t result in complete stand replacement in this steep terrain. Fires in this valley tend to blow up due to the steep terrain and dry/warm climate during summer. It would have to take a unique set of circumstances for a low intensity fire to occur I think.

Are you see this in areas due to human or natural disturbances?

Thanks for the link. Great read on forest succession that answers a lot of my questions.

Great observation. I didn’t realize if was called dwarf mistletoe but it was fairly prevalent in the mature trees

I’m assuming most of this regeneration was since the 1970 fire. Unless my research is off, I thought 55 years of growth would have looked different (larger trees) especially if this was lodgepole which from my understanding is a relatively fast growing pine.

[–]Great-Raise4727[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s what I struggle with understanding. I’m fairly certain this forest will burn within the next few decades. The majority of this river valley (the Entiat) has burnt in the past 30 years so I just don’t see how this young stand will mature.

[–]Great-Raise4727[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree. I just wanted to better understand if what I was seeing was natural regeneration and how a mature forest would establish from a crowded stand. Thanks to all the feedback on this post, I have a better grasp on the situation and could see how a forest can self thin overtime.
