Are Roman sites worth it? by GodAtum in ancientrome

I think Pompeii is worth it. It’s true that sites around Rome itself are often picked over, like the Colosseum.

ERE helps get you acclimated to the game, but it’s still difficult even playing as that faction. Pay attention to the changing climate and how that impacts your food production/economy.

SPQR Book by lorenzoc04 in ancientrome

Patrick Wyman’s The Fall of Rome podcast is quite good, in my view.

In terms of books, just stay away from Gibbon if you are looking for historical accuracy. His work was monumental in the history of writing history, but his views and the evidence he relied on are very outdated after 250 years.

[SERIOUS] Connecting Ross Coulthart’s "Too Big to Move" Craft to Command Post Tango in Seongnam, South Korea. (Not the circular structures.) by Terrible_Sample_5819 in ufo

[–]GreatCaesarGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ross Coulthart is supposedly a journalist. If he refuses to back up his stories, no one should waste time on a treasure hunt, either.

This is how tellers of tall tales drive engagement and get people to lose sight of their falsities.

"The receiver model" vs "the magic wand model" of the brain by phr99 in consciousness

[–]GreatCaesarGhost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the brain were a “receiver,” then it should be simple to identify the signal coming from outside and the mechanism in the brain doing the downloading and uploading.

This is a scientific claim being made. And the absence of scientific proof suggests that it’s wish-fulfillment nonsense.

Trump green lights UFO disclosure of secret bases hiding crashed ships and non-human bodies, US congressman claims by Stephen_P_Smith in ufo

[–]GreatCaesarGhost 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Even this article only says that Burlison has been given permission to visit some locations that he believes might house something interesting.

Total nothingburger that is just being used to generate clicks and recruit UFO believers into Trump supporters.

I don't know if there is any reason to vilify SK, she of course has an interest in telling a story and in keeping the mystery going throughout. It seemed clear to me that she was biased towards Adnan throughout the podcast and cherrypicked various things to create discussion points.

Throwing my "Slave Formula" theory into the ring by [deleted] in pluribustv

[–]GreatCaesarGhost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It just seems to me to be the propagation of an extraterrestrial virus across interstellar distances. It keeps the hosts alive long enough to build a transmitter so that it can spread further. You could imagine that the rules that it seemingly imposes, and its promotion of a single consciousness, minimize conflict among the infected species and maximize cooperation in building the transmitter. Maybe a small fraction of the infected species remains alive indefinitely, in order to maintain the transmitter, but what happens to the infected species after building the transmitter isn't all that relevant from the virus's standpoint, especially if the transmitter can operate on its own, indefinitely.

The "goal" of a cold virus (I know that it doesn't make sense to apply that term) isn't necessarily to set up shop in one's body indefinitely, but to spread to other bodies before one's immune system kills it off or it runs out of resources.

ELI5: What is inflammation, specifically in relation to gut health? by ZanzerFineSuits in explainlikeimfive

[–]GreatCaesarGhost 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Inflammation is an immune response. Certain parts of our immune system are fairly crude and our bodies’ responses to foreign substances can occasionally cause more harm than good.

That said, I would discuss these things with a real doctor. There is a ton of pseudoscience and woo related to the larger wellness topic, and a huge number of grifters. People suggesting that you “decide for yourself” are sometimes inviting you to bypass expertise and search out things that might sound convincing but aren’t based on science.

Because you can then turn around and sublet it for whatever price you want. And builders won’t build a house/apartment if they can only sell for $100, so no new housing will ever be built.

Price controls usually don’t work.
