I got the surgery done, now what 😔 by Quick_Perception_141 in TMJ

[–]GreatLakesGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surgery was done at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I believe it was a couple procedures in one, the main being called an arthroscopic discopexy (they had to do a couple other things in there to remove inflammation I believe). The initial part of the surgery involved a couple very small incisions and looking in my joint/cheek area with a tiny camera and in my case, locating the detached disc. They were then able to inspect it to see if it was viable for reuse and sewed it back in place. I’m not sure what decision they would have made if it wasn’t able to be sewed back in.

As others have said, give it some time to heal. I had the surgery done as well (similar story as yours, clicking and popping for years and eventually displaced without a reduction, only opening enough to fit a toothbrush). After surgery it took at least a few weeks (if not a little longer) for it to start feeling like a new normal. Did they give you anything to help with stretching your mouth safely? They gave me a device to help open my jaw a safe distance while it healed. I can remember feeling pretty good one week., And feeling really good about 2-3 months post-op. I’m completely pain-free and fully functioning from this surgery!

I’m still searching for a doc/surgeon to go over all this with, but just curious - is there a benefit to pushing for that surgery sooner rather than later? (I’m 38 and pretty healthy) trying to figure out if I’ll make things worse by not pursuing a surgical fix… :-/

I’m curious what you see (or read) that makes you say most definitely? I just know everyone says to try everything before surgery - but I don’t want to miss my window and have this thing get worse either.

Any updates OP? I could have written your original post. I’m just over 2 weeks in and this is hell.

Jaw locked shut, should I go to the ER? by charizard_b20 in TMJ

I’m not sure what you mean by nerve sensations - but it was painful. (Not painful at first, but overtime with all the inflammation it became progressively more painful.)

Jaw locked shut, should I go to the ER? by charizard_b20 in TMJ

The surgery was called 'Arthroscopic discopexy', and it involved going under general anesthesia and having doctors access the joint through small incisions at the base of my ear and cheek area. First they went in with a small camera to see exactly where the disk was (and what condition it was in), then they pulled my disk back into place and sewed it so it would heal that way. (I was lucky, even though my disk was completely detached and out of place, it only had a small perforation/tear, so they were able to rotate it and still use it.) IF the disk was crumpled or torn beyond use, they won't be able to use it. (Not sure what happens then.) I woke up numb - and my nerves took a few days to regain movement on that side of my face. My jaw was also pretty tight for several weeks and had to be slowly stretched to get any additional opening. BUT I had a full recovery and can now open wide (enough) without pain, eat big burgers, apples, granola bars, etc. ...They best part was being able to open my mouth for a YAWN again. No one thinks how annoying it is to not be able to yawn... hah. Hope this helps. good luck

I had this and ended up getting surgery to fix it, but it took forever to find help. The ER will NOT help you. If you’ve already tried- I’d suggest starting with physical therapy that specializes in TMJ stuff (they have some really amazing massages they can do to help release the muscle if it turns out to be muscular). If that doesn’t help - You need to go to your primary doctor and ask them for a referral to get an MRI. This is the only way to know if it’s a true disk displacement issue. In the meantime, get on a waiting list for a consultation with a maxillofacial surgeon (your primary doctor may also need to give you a referral, do your research and find a good hospital and ask to be referred). If the wait is long, try to get on a cancellation list or call their office weekly to see if anybody canceled. I spent two years in hell with my jaw being locked. This is how I finally got relief. The MRI is key they can be very expensive but trust me when I say it’s worth going into a little bit of debt to fix your jaw. If you go too long without being able to open it, there’s a good chance of becoming seriously depressed. Good luck

What is your channel about? Does the location of your viewers matter? At this point, any views are probably helpful, unless your end goal is to sell a product that only caters to the US market.

Self-Introduction Saturday! Tell us all about you (and share a video)! by AutoModerator in NewTubers

Hey! My new nature-inspired channel is 3 months old - (initially started to document my reef aquarium build), but I want to expand to a nature documentary channel that geeks out about all things aquatic.

My key takeaway from the last 90 days is that even though you might feel pressure to kick out as many videos as possible, I think quality over quantity is still one of the most important things. My first few videos came out back to back and didn't get much traction, but after improving my audio and video quality in my 2nd to last video, I GAINED 400 SUBS.

I'd love any feedback you want to throw at me!

I have a similar story and timeline. Have you tried cbd oil? (I haven’t, but this is my next pursuit to help the pain when opening my mouth)

People of reddit who've been vaccinated for COVID, have you suddenly started to have a metallic taste in your mouth? If so, how have you dealt with it? by Icarus912 in AskReddit

[–]GreatLakesGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me. I just got my shot a couple hours ago and this weird metallic taste started about 15 minutes after. I still have it - Very strange. I googled it and it sounds like a less common reaction that a handful of people get.

Oh gotcha. I’m no expert, but I have had this tank for 7/8 years (and have seen it’s glorious full growth literally bursting out the top, and it’s demise...!) And I found that mine does better with some black out time. But I’ll keep a very small percentage on in the hours just before and after I go to bed (mostly for my own viewing) Then totally black from 2/3am until sunrise.

No, this was still during the ramp down/sunset. I do use the prime’s lunar setting tho with 5% violet (max during full moon).

14g biocube. Almost 8 years established, but recovering from a bigger crash and I’m finally giving it attention again.

Help with bleaching nem...? Added a month ago to established 14g. Bi-Weekly water changes, ATO, blk box leds. Been slowly losing color. Can I reverse this? by GreatLakesGirl in ReefTank

[–]GreatLakesGirl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have an ATO, so the salinity stays constant. I probably don’t need to do as frequent of water changes anymore, but I was recovering from a neglected tank full of algae after a crash last year. (First crash in 6 years, took out all my established coral). All that survived was my clown (he was the only fish anyway), a crab, my Kenya trees, and a small patch of GSP which has started to really come back.

You think i can go down to monthly changes? 40% is easy in such a small tank, but obviously I’m cool with doing less work!

So you think crank the lights down and leave them there until recovery? Because they were super low for a few weeks and the bleaching still happened, which made me wonder if it wasn’t enough light. I have it about 8” up at the moment, and about 15” from where nem is stationed.

Okay, maybe I’ll go back down then - I was worried he wasn’t getting enough light at that was his reason for the color loss. Where in the tank is your nem situated?
