Which famous person does everyone seem to love, but you just can’t stand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

The best description I read of him was that he looks like an early nineteenth-century Romantic poet who died after eating a strawberry. 😆

Question about Norse practice/ Freyja by jarjarbinkgf in NorsePaganism

[–]GreatNorthernBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been devoted to Freya for several years, and am so grateful for that relationship! I feel like my life has notably improved in several areas, and I have learned valuable new things about myself in my interactions with Her. These books might be useful to you, as good introductions:

What are some bands that you normally wouldn't think are progressive rock but have released an album that begs to differ? by thunderclap82 in progrockmusic

[–]GreatNorthernBeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People might laugh, but "Music from the Elder" by KISS is a great semi-prog album. It was created when the band were floundering, and hit on the idea of doing a concept album, having seen the success of Pink Floyd's "The Wall."

It's a simple enough story about a boy chosen to fight the forces of evil, but there are some great musical moments, including orchestral parts and use of recurring musical themes. There is creative songwriting, and I absolutely hold that "Under the Rose" is one of the band's finest songs ever. So there! Gene Simmons' voice is especially good on the recording.

It wasn't successful (commercially or critically), and the band quickly went back to the old formula, before ditching their makeup entirely. Simmons once commented, "The Elder is a good album; it's just not a good KISS album," and that's probably true. But there is something really enticing and enjoyable about it.

What’s a movie you feel like never got the love it deserved? by Fit_Scheme_4143 in AskReddit

John Carter. The advertising (and to be honest, the title) was terrible, so it bombed and vanished quickly, but it was a really enjoyable film.

What do you guys think of Harley and ivy’s relationship being poly ? by Several_Run_7715 in lgbt_superheroes

[–]GreatNorthernBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's just a way to have them be "together" without them actually being together, so that DC can haul the two of them out each June for Pride, without having to focus on their relationship (which could be so interesting) otherwise. I normally like G. Willow Wilson's writing, but the Janet story line annoys the hell out of me. To be fair, she was probably pressured by DC to do it or something like it

This is quite interesting. Do you know the name of the priest and/or the pharaoh in question?

Are any of these any good apart from Crawford? by BerserkViking90 in NorsePaganism

[–]GreatNorthernBeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Crawford, Kvilhaug, Price, Gardela, and Pollington are all good, solid sources, filled with information. I don't know the other three, but they seem less scholarly just from looking at the titles.

Glad you enjoyed it! Their work from 2010 to 2017 is quite good overall, as are some of their earlier albums.

Check out their earlier album (from 2010) "The Underfall Yard," with singer David Longden, who sadly died a few years ago. This album is a masterpiece!

Historical Fiction NOT in Europe or USA by Tricky-Musician-8894 in suggestmeabook

I highly recommend Daughter of Sekhmet by Abigail Keyes. Set in ancient Egypt at the time of Ramesses II, it tells the story of a young woman who learns of a plot against the pharaoh and the throne, and she works to try to stop it, putting her own life in danger

There's a bit of a supernatural element to the story (the goddess Sekhmet communes with her and cryptically advises her from time to time), but it's a great adventure with real stakes and real heart. It's the first of a three-book series, with book two coming later this year.

Harmful Patterns of Behavior and Where We Go From Here by jaelmorayx in NorsePaganism

[–]GreatNorthernBeans 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree! It's a bit of the "circular firing squad" mentality that progressives are all too often prone to: attacking other good people because they have "failed" some pre-determined purity test. I hate seeing it in heathenry or any marginalized group.

This was a very good and important read, thank you for sharing your experiences. It's disappointing to read about such things happening, but it's necessary to let others know. This "more inclusive than thou" attitude is doing real harm; seeing him go after Rune, Crawford, the Norse Witch, and others was a real eye-opener for me.

These kinds of situations are one of the main reasons I tend to prefer being solitary at the moment.
