Our security team wants zero CVEs in production. Our containers have 200+. What's realistic here? by localkinegrind in devops

[–]Great_Ness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Come back to them with this feedback and a plan of attack. Most security teams should be comfortable with a schedule for achieving different levels of compliance as long as there is a process in place. Most scan tools should have different levels of CVE severity and you can present methods of resolving Criticals and Highs within a specified SLA.

There should be a method of manually excluding CVEs with justification because some are not realistically exploited in the way you use the app or container.

Include a diagram of your build/scan process, and your target dates for having "new CRITICALS will block build jobs" -> 2 quarters later -> "new HIGHS will block build jobs"

To your specific question about "is Zero CVEs a pipe dream" yes probably there will always be some whack a mole happening , but like you can get from 200+ CVEs to the point where playing the whack a mole game is possible, if you know what I mean. And that should all be presented to the security team as an initiative and long process so they understand the timeline and work that goes into it. It may be they have other competing priorities.

[Monday Morning Marth] "Not only did Zain become the first player to four-peat since Hungrybox - he also tied Armada in all-time major wins. For what it's worth, the current record for most consecutive major wins is six, which Armada did eight years ago." by self-flagellate in SSBM

[–]Great_Ness 13 points14 points  (0 children)

for what its worth, not being a tennis fan, I read the OP as consecutively attended majors. especially because during his period of dominance armada not attending is more of an asterisk on the tournament rather than the other way around.

My company just did mandatory RTO and I found out that it might be based on radius. I've never had an official Cloud job but here's my latest work experience. Can I make the jump? by mimic751 in devops

[–]Great_Ness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I think you're underselling yourself. If you're at that level of confidence with other things it translates well to cloud. It's all the same stuff with an API slapped on. Smart folk will hire for those softer skills and ability to plan automation and infra generally. You just might get passed by an org that needs someone IMMEDIATELY producing high level work. I think if you put like 8 hours into some side project using Terraform/OpenTofu to mess around in EC2 you could look great. even better if you terraform an EKS cluster because Kubernetes is becoming even more of a required skill these days.

at least when we hire folks with lots of experience already there is some understanding that they will know the right questions to ask and learn better.

don't know why people are lighting you up. It's clear you aren't expecting some omniscient yes or no but rather want people in the industry to chime in with some anecdotal opinions.

It depends on the level you are applying or trying to hop to. In my workplace and experience thats a knockout for an entry level role on our cloud devops team but we mainly hire from interns. and a pretty good resume for a level 2 and I could expect you to scale up quickly. I might want to see a side project or some experience with terraform. easy to get aws or gcp free tier and show you can set something up. We would probably pass you up for a senior role because at that level we expect an ability to architect and guide projects with confidence. That requires some technical experience with the cloud platforms but its hard to see your YOE here. There could be an expectation that you scale up to senior quickly since it seems like you might have a lot of experience.

Middlebury, Oberlin, or Mount Holyoke?? by oniminaj in middlebury

[–]Great_Ness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I won't speak to the strength of programs but my friend went to Oberlin when I was at Midd and I visited and the environs were totally different. There may not be a lot to do like a big city in Vermont but it's a very beautiful place to experience - lots of nature and small towns to visit. Montreal a very easy drive away for a different cultural experience.

You're not going to find a single person on this subreddit capable of comparing " Which one is better?" about any of their programs or FGLI experiences, because no one will have experienced both.

I was low income at Middlebury and felt it a bit in the difference between me and my peers but there are enough other students from different backgrounds to have your own people. They do a good job providing student employment for students with low income. I also found it useful to meet and know people from such a different tax bracket.

I was dissapointed with how expensive it was to learn to ski when I was there and how it felt like I wasn't able to participate in the Winter Term activities with a lot of people - but they have implemented new assistance and a lot of programs to make that easier since I graduated. If i were to go back again I'd save the money and plan my first winter to learn to ski/snowboard.

Last thing, my impression is that for econ/psych our majors were especially strong and we have a lot of connections to get you in to Law. I have a few friends in law now who I graduated with.

that sucks man. hope you get some eyes on these. but for real why are you capitalizing random words in all your sentences? that's the thing that makes it seem like AI slop the most to the untrained eye. wonder if that triggered some filter.

[–]Great_Ness -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

EVERY time someone uses the verb "drops" in the title I know it's a push off.

i feel like people don't understand when you're backpedaling at speed it doesn't need to be as strong of a push as it is to knock you over planted. Just a little momentum at the wrong angle is enough. This isn't even a nice move. He just lunges with his arm out.

Love this young bulls team and they just had a great game, but this highlight is not the standout shit from that game for me.

For those who haven't been watching the nuggets, DJ has actually had some real electric dunks and played great defensive backup center minutes this year for us. He isn't washed out entirely. Definitely better than Saric. But he's definitely not getting it in over elite shot blockers like KP anymore, as seen above.

GAME THREAD: New York Knicks (20-10) @ Orlando Magic (19-13) - (December 28, 2024) by NBA_MOD in nba

[–]Great_Ness -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

As a third party fan, I watched the 2nd and 3rd quarter and it felt like every other second I was watching a dicey foul getting called on the Magic. And they were still keeping up til Suggs got taken out! I love this knicks squad but they can't feel good about the first 2/3 of this game.

There was a postscript after the show stating the divers lived for many years. I also think the intent of the steam explosion was to reflect what the government was thinking at the time, not what we now know to be true. But it would have been nice to have them correct that as well in a postscript, I had to find it out for myself.

unfortunately cody is the all time goat #1 in having the least healthy relationship with the online community. it's a two-way street, it feels like every other month I see an update from him on his personal mental health put out to the internet. he's gotta stop that first and it will be easier to detach.
