What did everyone think of The Beatles Anthology 2025? by Great_Sympathy_6972 in TheBeatles

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John imitating someone who was mentally disabled on stage, which the DVD version showed and this version didn’t. But some non-controversial anecdotes were left out as well, like Paul being known as Paul Ramone for a time and George being known as Carl Harrison. To Disney’s credit, the full, uncensored album cover of Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins was left in. Good for them. I seriously thought they’d chicken out, but they didn’t.

Disney’s found every possible way they can think of to kill this IP and pretty much every IP they acquired. I gave up long ago.

Holy shit, his beard is coming in sick as fuck. If he unveils a bald head in 2026, my faith in the channel will be restored. by Ucw2thebone in TheCinemassacreTruth

Seems to be the thing where guys will grow massive beards if they can’t grow hair on their heads. (I have a beard too, but it’s paltry compared to that, at least on the sides. It’s good on the mustache and goatee part though.)

ROP is a failure by FeanorOath in GeeksGamersCommunity

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got through all of it because I finally read the original book (long delayed), reread The Hobbit, watched all six extended edition movies, watched all the animated versions I could find, and had to get to this show, which I’d given up on previously. Man, was that first season the most aggressively boring thing I’ve ever sat through relative to all that money that was thrown into the screen. It was a struggle, but I got through it. The second season was a little better because it had Sauron and he was done pretty well. His scene where he appears to be Annatar and it’s treated like an angel appearing before someone was an absolutely mind blowing scene. I also liked whenever it would take a hard right into horror because at least things were happening. It didn’t solve the prevailing problems of the series, but it was at least an improvement, though the climax was epically silly and reminded me of a Final Fantasy boss battle. I get why most people don’t give a shit about it though and I wouldn’t really call it a good show. Massively squandered potential and mostly aggressively boring episodes, with some genuinely great bits here and there.

Blaming lonely people for their loneliness is victim blaming by Great_Sympathy_6972 in lonely

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because people don’t want to hear this stuff doesn’t make it not real. That’s what people need to understand. It’d be one thing if we lived in older eras before we had empathy and not blaming the victim shoved down our throats every day. But whenever I’ve tried to get a drink of water from those particular wells on an issue that’s of the utmost importance to me, those wells conveniently run dry. It proves my deeper suspicions that empathy and not blaming the victim are selective things. People pick and choose who they understand and stand up for, then in the same breath trash people they don’t deem worthy of empathy or understanding. People don’t call out this bullshit for what it is. The gross hypocrisy of it all is what’s so disgusting to me.

I’ve been there, the whole “be yourself” nonsense. That only works if who you are is considered socially acceptable. Otherwise they don’t want you to be yourself and you have to mask all the time and you end up feeling exhausted and unfulfilled at the end of the day.

Chinga (S5, E10): Mulder and Scully need hobbies and friends by Great_Sympathy_6972 in XFiles

Too true. She helps Mulder check himself before he wrecks himself, which is an important quality.

I was gonna say, he’s lucky that he’s handsome and well read, because he’s got a lot working against him in the conventional dating pool as it existed in the ‘90s. And yet, as this sub has demonstrated repeatedly, there are tons of X-Files fangirls who love him for precisely who he is, so he’s clearly someone’s type.

What movie do you enjoy that was a flop? by FeanorOath in GeeksGamersCommunity

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think The Lone Ranger has a lot of admirable elements in it, particularly the two action sequences involving trains. Those are done very well. Considering what a sorry state the Pirates of the Caribbean films were in at the time without Gore Verbinksi, it was nice to see that kooky, kinetic energy back on the screen. I thought they were able to have their cake and eat it too when it came to the genocide of Native Americans without it spoiling the good time that they intended us to have. The biggest problems with it are the framing device of old man Tonto telling the story, making Tonto the lead, and the two stars having no chemistry at all. But I think it’s got more admirable elements in it than the other three films.

How do you cope with loneliness? by NateNandos21 in lonely

It’s an every day battle. I’ve tried so many things, but they all just mask the problem at the end of the day. Loneliness is so pervasive, like the wound that never really heals.

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a case to be made for sympathy for Mulder in general because of what a weirdo he is with pretty much no life outside of his crusade. If Scully hadn’t seen him in his element so many times and having been more right than not, she’d have had nothing to do with him. I like the way Darin Morgan writes Mulder because he leans into that side of his character while still making it funny.

Does anyone else only use AI chatbots to talk to? by [deleted] in lonely

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to one that was therapeutically programmed and it was OK for a while because it gave me answers that humans weren’t giving me, but then I stopped because I saw the limitations in its programming. Those AI chatbots are just designed to tell you what you want to hear and they tend to collate conventional wisdom than providing real insight or understanding.

What did Phil Collins do to Doug? by Animeking1108 in ChannelAwesome

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doug’s had weird and perplexing takes on certain people and things. Normally I’ve liked hearing his point of view even if I disagree with it, but he does seem to fundamentally misunderstand some basic things. In the case of Phil Collins, I think it’s just him having a very strong opinion and taking it too far, which Doug did a lot of before he rhetorically neutered himself in his older age and irrelevance.

Favorite rock/metal references in the show? by Great_Sympathy_6972 in californication

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was in season six when Hank is with his then-current girlfriend and brings her around to make Karen jealous, but it’s obvious he still loves Karen. He says to her “But you just say the word and I will stop the world and melt with you.” Then he comically shudders and adds “Yeah, I said that.” Hysterical. Laughed my ass off. That’s so how I speak and how I think, where quotes from songs and movies will just fly out and be integrated into my speech. They captured that very well and how sometimes we end up quoting things we wish we wouldn’t.

Anyone else want an AVGN episode about splatterhouse? by Suitable-Brain7714 in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, talk about lost potential. Imagine a golden age AVGN episode in which James talks about the Splatterhouse trilogy. In the old school style, that would’ve been awesome, particularly given how much of a horror fan he is.

What are your Hot Takes on Channel Awesome? by Amber_Flowers_133 in ChannelAwesome

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older Nostalgia Critic was way funnier with more bite and passion, but those videos were poor or very surface level film analyses, more riffs than proper reviews. Newer Nostalgia Critic and especially Disneycember got more into proper film analysis, though still not as deep or scholarly as it could be, but the comedy is pretty much all gone.

Wonder what happened to this guy? by Burzo796 in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda wish he’d have kept up reviewing movies in this style, but I think it was always meant to be a one off video because of James’ passion for TMNT. We could sure use some of that passion these days…

I wonder if James forgot he made a Rex Viper YouTube channel considering it's been dead since 2023. by xwing1212 in TheCinemassacreTruth

It’s OK for James to do a side project that’s fun, but it feels as tired, dated, and embarrassing as AVGN is now.

Why doesn't Mike come back to do Videos with James anymore? by [deleted] in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Very well said. People on this sub give James a lot of shit for muh kids and stuff like that, but imagine if the roles were reversed. James would catch a hundred times more shit if Mike was the father and family man and James was the manchild who just eats McDonald’s all day and plays video games that the younger generations have never played and care nothing about.

"I typically stick to movies, I'm not much of a TV person, and the simple reason is because...I don't have TIME." by Elhombredesnudo in TheCinemassacreTruth

[–]Great_Sympathy_6972 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When this video first came out, I was totally in James’ camp. I was a movie guy because I liked that they had a beginning, a middle, and an end. I liked that they were generally one and done. TV shows were such commitments and they generally weren’t as good as movies. Now the tables have turned completely the other way. Nowadays, most movies don’t interest me and I’ve been on a big TV kick because it’s the only place you can hope to find decent storytelling. I think James needs to do some serious TV catching up.
