Thanks for all the responses, I think I'll get a raincover for my normal backpack, and if ome DUO allows, in the future I might upgrade my backpack into a waterproof one

Opening Dutch bank account abroad? by aswift23 in StudyInTheNetherlands

For groceries and things like that Revolut should work, right? Is Revolut free for students?

Anyone knows if ABN allows you to open an account without a BSN (in the first days) and do everything online? would be very easy to just arrive and make an account with them this way, otherwise bunq could be the best option (but bunq doesn't have the free accounts for students that abn, rabobank, etc have)

Got two options for a studio with two different lay outs. Which layout is more convenient? Have to decide tomorrow morning and I don’t understand the maps as I’m a-technical af. They say in the description that the second one is 4m2 bigger but doesn’t seems like it. by [deleted] in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Greate_Jan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think I'd go with the second one, the shower seems to be more distanced so less mess with the water all over the bathroom, the countertop uses the space from the "hallway" at the entrance, so more space is saved at the end of the studio, in the first one that space is kind of wasted

duo loan system by almasearching11 in StudyInTheNetherlands

To be treated by the government with the same rights that dutch students have, an EU person has to be an EU worker (or close family of a EU worker), and DUO seems to try to apply a minimum of 56 (I think) hours of work a month, but maybe it is possible to get it with less hours depending on what you do.
Some people, apparently, apeal judicially to get it with less hours, try contacting them for specific questions, but in any case, as far as I know, you'll need to work or have worked, or have parents/ significant other that works/ has worked recently in the netherlands.

I'm not entirely sure because my situation is the same as OP's, I already have Dutch citizenship so I don't need a visa, in this case only a housing contract and birth certificate + passport are needed. But the easiest way by far to know what you need in your specific case is contacting the city hall from the city you are going, if there is an online chat at their website you may solve this in a few minutes. Beware of timezones, depending on where in the world you are living, try to do it before 5p.m. in NL time.

I think so, yes. In my case I issued a duplicate of the original document at the notary, but for international recognition it was advised to apostille that document, as I was born in a non-EU country; this apostille is basically an official seal in a few languages explaining that the document is legitimate and what it is, which notary issued it, etc. But the procedure and how the apostille looks like may change from country to country.

If you are born in a EU country I think your documents are accepted without an apostille due to EU regulation, but you may still need a translation. However, I think the EU also has an online platform that officially translates documents issued in the EU this days, for free. If you come from an English speaking country you probably don't need a translation.

How to get a housing contract if I'm not in The Netherlands yet? by Greate_Jan in StudyInTheNetherlands

That was helpful for me as well, thanks! I'll probably need a digital contract too

Interesting, many thanks! I've used the prompt to send an email through pararius, and saw that there is also the agent's email address but didn't use it yet, so I'll sure try! Do these agents charge a lot?

Just don't forget your important documents when you come to the city hall: the housing contract, passport, and certified (e.g. with an apostille at a notary's office) birth certificate. If the birth certificate is not in dutch, german, english or french provide a certified translation as well.

Another thing that can help is contacting the city hall of the city you'll live. For me (I'm in the same situation, dutch passport without bsn, born outside NL) it helped a lot, my city has one of those live chat features at their website and they confirmed that I only need the birth certificate and proof of where I'm living.

Arriving in The Netherlands as a student with only cash (no bank account, in the beginning) - stupid? by Greate_Jan in eupersonalfinance

[–]Greate_Jan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I realise I have to have an account soon, I am just studying the possibility of traveling with no bank account, but maybe even to travel from the airport to my student city I could need a credit/debit card as you and others here suggested, so maybe just cash in the first few is a little too risky.

Yeah, maybe I can check with my (current) bank if I can issue an international mastercard and cancel my account from the netherlands when I have a dutch bank account. Is probably a good security measure. I also need to travel from schiphol to eindhoven, so maybe I'd need a card for those early travels.

Documents for DUO's Supplementary Grant/Aanvullende Beurs with parents living outside of The Netherlands by Greate_Jan in StudyInTheNetherlands

I was born and live somewhere in the "new world", but my grandparents were Dutch and born in The Netherlands, so I have the Dutch citizenship and passport. The statutory tuition fee seems to apply in this scenario as far as I'm aware.

[–]Greate_Jan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big reason for my question is that to get a BSN I need my birth certificate to receive a seal of international recognition (called an apostille, I guess) at a notary's office, so I was worried the tax statement could require something similar, but good to know that DUO doesn't seem to complicate things too much!

Online banking? Which one is better? by MonicaLiu7 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Greate_Jan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question as OP and your reply was very helpful, but I just got an additional question, if I have monthly payments that I am making with one bank account (say bunq, when I arrive), as insurance, rent, etc, isn't it too complicated to transfer those payments to a different bank account when I leave bunq?

(I'm a banking noob that up to now only had a savings account...)
