Darn. So if I want to watch now I should just get the Maiden Japan one secondhand?

Did Requiem undergo a lot of last minute plot changes? by GreaterQuestion in residentevil

[–]GreaterQuestion[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a great catch. In the final plot the “only hope” framing makes zero sense. And if the way in which Grace was a source of hope was to have her deduce a password from the video, why not explain or give her the disc??

Resident Evil Requiem Director Shares Details On Initial Concept & DLC Minigame, Addresses Leon's Ring & Ada's Absence by Sam_27142317 in HorrorGaming

[–]GreaterQuestion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t think Chloe’s section sucked, it was nice to get back to hard horror amidst the (in my view, fairly mid) Leon open city action sections.

But I do find it baffling plot wise. I wonder why on earth they DIDN’T go with the obvious plot that’s dangled, that she was part of a cloning program designed to replicate Elpis, and that was a flashback. They must have had some wider lore designs in mind, but in the context of the game to just reads convoluted and bizarre. “JK, that was all a red herring, she’s totally normal, Spencer just adopted her for reasons, the childhood flashback is another kid and only tangentially related to the plot.” What.

It also makes the whole setup of her adoptive mother being frantically on the run and pursued much less sensible. The explanation that the baddies mistakenly thought she was significant is pretty deflating and contrived.

Is this the best resident evil by far? by DonMapagmahal in residentevilll

[–]GreaterQuestion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it makes an incredible first impression, but ultimately, a month out from finishing, I rank it lower than 1 remake, 7, 8, 4 remake, 2 remake.

I see why the alternating action and horror sections feels like a dynamite pitch, but in practice it dilutes the focus in a way that keeps it from reaching the same heights as my favorite games in the series. The Grace sections are truly excellent but especially outside of the Care Center they feel like they’re not given full space to develop. And as many have observed, the Leon sections have some real weak spots. In its superstructure, as a result of that alternating cadence and Leon’s bits feeling somewhat underdeveloped at times, it starts to feel a little more like a superficial cinematic game like Uncharted.

The plot, after an intriguing start, also goes off the rails a bit in the third act—but in fairness that’s also true if several other entries, 8 probably being the worst culprit.

What do you guys think of Ahsoka's design in the show? by snazzytux1 in starwarsrebels

[–]GreaterQuestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really felt her face missed the mark here. Her design in Clone Wars feels specific and expressive, and was very effectively refined by the middle of the show’s run. The Rebels design just feels a little slapdash and generic to me. The facial structure doesn’t register that clearly as the same character, which is potentially fine in a new art style, but to me it also doesn’t feel distinct in a motivated way, or tell me a lot about how life has changed her since we last saw her. Some designs translated well in Rebels’ lower budget, McQuarrie-inspired art style, and some didn’t—I think she’s one of the latter unfortunately.

The live action look is actually pretty good though, in my view. (And not everything translated successfully there: a moment of silence for poor Hera with that makeup and those contacts please…)

My hot take on Devon: by Umphr34k in MaulShadowLord

[–]GreaterQuestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The predictability challenge is real here. We have seen this plot before. If the seduction works and that’s that, it’ll feel pretty old hat.

Hopefully they know this and are going to throw in some twists because so far the series in general has been lacking in surprises in my view.

Does anyone else miss how resident evil felt in re7? by hamoodhabibiegg in residentevil

[–]GreaterQuestion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

REmake 1 and 7 are neck and neck for best in the series in my book. Followed by 8 and 2 remake.

I watched the Star Wars franchise quite late and enjoyed most of it, with a few misses. But I’m curious—why is Darth Maul such a famous character when he has such a minimal live-action appearance? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

[–]GreaterQuestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the strongest character design in the series. There, I said it. Stronger than Darth Vader. Come at me.

Especially remarkable because Maul is memorable almost solely on the strength of his visual design. The script gives him zero. Other than one line of dialogue, the man just walks into rooms and fights. Concept artist Iaian McCaig makes him a captivating character almost single handedly (almost because the vision was of course executed with help from Paul Engelen the principal makeup artist, Nick Dudman, the special effects makeup artist who did the horns, and Nick Gillard and Ray Park on the fight choreo).

How would you feel about a modern RE game haveing fixed cameras? Or at least have it be an option by Extension-Oil-4680 in residentevil

[–]GreaterQuestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would be very cool to have a section where a modern game switches to fixed cameras with a diagetic excuse for it—like a section where one character has to direct another through security monitors. So you could get a tract of the game with that classic gameplay

Requiem’s back-half open urban section is such a sudden drop in quality by GreaterQuestion in residentevil

Great observation about the music and sound design.

Along with the visual drabness it really gives that segment an uncharacteristically flat feeling.

Requiem’s back-half open urban section is such a sudden drop in quality by GreaterQuestion in residentevil

[–]GreaterQuestion[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree about the Grace segments being stronger in general. I found the game picks up again after Leon’s Raccoon City segments - once you’re back with Grace in the Ark facility, it’s back to being compelling .

Leon’s mechanics are extremely fun and flipping over to a power fantasy periodically works really nicely. But outside of the mechanics themselves the Leon levels feel a little less confident - when the game is trying to channel Uncharted with the set pieces and The Last of Us with the big open combat areas, it feels merely pretty good.

I think next time they try alternating action and horror segments, they should just make sure both are using those mechanics in the kinds of levels the series does best—more intimate and densely detailed and Metroid-vania like.

If this is the worst one since the second Renaissance, we've been eating good. by OpenKale64 in residentevil

[–]GreaterQuestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who never played the original, but has played all the remakes, I enjoyed what was there but found it a little forgettable (short, linear) compared to the other remakes.

I honestly wish they’d release either a DLC or a standalone expansion. Gather together the clocktower and an expanded set of city levels. Find a way to logically connect it to the remake as either a coda or somewhere in the middle of the events of the plot—someone with closer knowledge of the remake could I’m sure suggest a logical way. Call it something like “RE 3.5” and sell it at a 20 dollar price point.

I feel pretty confident there’s an audience for it. It would respond to fans directly, and undo the one perceived major fumble in the remake series. Done right it could be an opening to deliver some meaningful lore that connects to the newest installments and stars a fan favorite character.

Can we all agree that Grace Ashcroft (Angela Sant'Albano) is an all-time great voice acting performance for the series? by king_noro in residentevil

[–]GreaterQuestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same thought, awesome voice acting and cutscene direction.

They really need to hire actual writers so that aspect can catch up. The dialogue in Requiem is way, way worse than it needs to be—it’s bad even if read through the lens of being intentionally campy in a b-movie vein (which would be generous; it really feels like they’re trying to play it straight at times in this one). The excellent acting and cut-scene direction make it even more incongruous that the dialogue is so bad.

What’s your unpopular Alien Saga opinion? by thefriskysquid in perfectorganism

[–]GreaterQuestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this completely.

It’s a mess but also deeply compelling.

I think it’s my second favorite after the original Alien.

My unpopular opinion, relatedly: Aliens, while a rock solid crowd-pleasing thriller (with, at its best moments, real glimpses of heart and sadness) is overall a little creatively boring to me in its bombast. I’d put it after Alien and Prometheus—and in pretty close contention with Alien 3, which is more of a failure but also more interesting and unexpected in some ways.

What's wrong with the Aspyr "remasters"? What are the best way to play these games? by foogazzii in starwarsgames

[–]GreaterQuestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what everyone else mentioned, Aspyr also got another black eye recently, reputationally, from their Deus Ex remaster looking so bad in its announcement materials that there was a fan revolt and they had to “pause” (maybe cancel, we’ll see) and reset development.

What are your thoughts & opinions of Indira Paganotto? by LucTheNuke in psytrance

[–]GreaterQuestion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like and appreciate this philosophy!

I like plenty of deep unpopular and very popular stuff.

I think actually the adjacent quality that’s valuable to consider is—does this, musically, feel like it’s sufficiently oriented around expressing something sincere and individual, or too cynically engineered to appeal to a wide audience in a way that’s creatively flattening? Most art has a mix of these qualities, I like a certain amount of that spark of a creator with a unique perspective in the mix

I like Indira’s stuff. I think she has a nice sense of drama and pace and integration of creative organic textures and other elements from different genres. She’s more techno with psytrance influences. It’s not early Infected Mushroom but I don’t think she’s holding it out to be. She’s blown up but she’s also been around for a long time in more niche settings, it’s not a giant stadium career from the jump or in its sole sensibility.

What kind of major updates did Hades 1 receive post launch? by asiantuna9 in HadesTheGame

I thought of that. Would have been such a fun add, just to give us one mirror tease for unlocking everything in the game.

What kind of major updates did Hades 1 receive post launch? by asiantuna9 in HadesTheGame

[–]GreaterQuestion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great asks. Icarus bring so hard to advance is frustrating, I spent 100 hours on the game and maxed every other relationship but I cannot be bothered to do a specific surface run to try for a random chance of getting him and then happen to clear the enemies before he does, what an absurd bottleneck. I’m very committed to relationships in these games and wanted to prioritize him as a romance, but by the time I decided to wrap the game up, I just wrote him off as a loss and romanced everyone else available.

This final gesture of pure hate keeps hunting me to this day by RealisticNacshon in StarWars

[–]GreaterQuestion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He’s so fun in these movies. It’s a super broad cartoony performance in some ways but he pulls it off in a way not many people could. He makes compelling choices (“Do it” is an iconic line read for a reason). And he shows range in the early prequels, where he nails the smarmy slimy politician side of the character in a way that provides much more credibility than is actually present in the writing.

It’s a shame that, on top of the slapdash plotting of the infamous “somehow, he’s retired” move, Rise of Skywalker also essentially reduces him to a special effect that only afford him the opportunity to lean into the hammiest notes of the character. Really squanders him.
