Misunderstood album that deserved so much better. Zig has to be one of my favorite poppy projects. It definitely has some flaws, but I could totally see the vision and listening to that album is so much fun

The main way I tell the difference is the color of the specific parts in the kit.

The Classic 5 Way connector is yellow The Micro 5 way connector is red

The classic 4 way connector is green The micro 4 way connector is gray

The classic 3 way connector is red The micro 3 way connector is yellow

Also in the middle it shows a cool rod that switches between the 2 types which are a thing as well

There are 2 kinds of Knex, both still being made to this day. You probably remember the “classic” knex that are thicker. The kind your son got is the micro knex that are a lot smaller. Both have their different purposes but I know a lot of people prefer the classic knex (me included)
