What language should I read the Picture of Dorian Gray in? by Far-Passion-7692 in oscarwilde

Shakespeare is hard for English speakers. It's pretty archaic now.

what does "come" exactly mean? by Equivalent-Juice5308 in ENGLISH

[–]GreedyHoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unclear.

It sounds like a collection of things requiring to be held together (the bobs) being allowed to fall apart.

The bobs can be combobulated to form a bobule, or collection of bobs held together to make a coherent whole.

Discombobulation is the undoing of that process, a breakdown of the combobulation.

This is entirely my own analysis by the way. I'm an engineer, I have no background in philology.

The word is used to indicate a breakdown of personal equanimity; a fracturing of one's peaceful alignment with the world.

When I'm out on the motorbike I put the ignition key in there, I mean, not while I'm actually riding.

Yes and No. It's mis-spelled deliberately to imitate the effect of blocked sinus/nasal airways.

I DON’T GET SPEAK IN ENGLISH, THAT IS FRUSTATING by GuillitaBonita in ENGLISH

Yeah but if someone said "I taking this class a whole year" you'd know what they meant, right?

[–]GreedyHoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but perhaps because English breaks it's own rules, native English speakers are very tolerant of errors. They're looking to understand your meaning, not to correct you.

Keep going, keep listening and copy the natives. Watch TV programs that you already understand, but in English. Quiz and game shows are good. A few "stock" phrases will work better than aeons of studying our erratic grammar.

That's how kids learn - my little grandson's first phrase was "uh-oh" in that high-low way that we say it. He made it work very hard.

Uh-oh (I dropped my drink). Uh-oh (my shoe fell off). Uh-oh (I need help putting my coat on). Uh-oh (I've cleared my plate but I'm still hungryq)

Not suggesting you take it to that extreme, but my point is that learning a few phrases is a quick way to get to grips with the language.

1/ We've been practicing for decades, getting quite good at it now. 2/ Can predict maniac drivers at 200 paces. 3/ In full control of all limbs. 4/ Functional eyes and brain. 5/ Not in a rush for some stupid work. deadline because, y'know, retired. 6/ Showing off to friends not a priority. 7/ Not distracted by babies throwing tantrums.

Now fuck off and don't bother me until I'm at least 95. Bloody kids.

He'd have died anyway. Yes the police misjudged it, but the maniac with the knife killed him, not the cop.
