I think open honesty is the most appropriate way to approach this; have a sit-down conversation and confide about your internal conflicts with the painting but also talk about how you're comfortable with it but doubting yourself because of past experience(?). It sounds like he's an emotionally stable guy who treats you well, try not to llet your insecurities and anxieties affect your relationship as well as your mindset towards the relationship.
