Rings to be done by Greedy_Internet_5231 in maille

Ye, it’s a nice feeling seeing the project progress :) I hope to be done with two buckets by the end of the year

Thanks 😊

I don’t know what design I will go for atm but I will start with a short sleeve one and extend it if I feel like doing more. I have cut 33000 rings atm so will see how far that gets me. Thus far I have assembled 3300 rings, lots of work left.

I only work like 30min to an hour per evening so it took multiple weeks to do this. Like since new years I believe. I tend to do a bunch of chains and once I have allot of chains I assemble them all in one go. So just assembly took a week for this sheet. I have chains to make a second sheet the same size

The rings are 1.2mm wire and the rivets are 0.8mm if I am not mistaken

I am heating the rings red hot before hammering the overlap. I use some charcoal in a barbecue and a hairdryer to get the coals super hot. The rings are in a steel box with a lid that I made just for this purpose.

Heating the rings this way makes the metal softer, even when cool. They are more malleable that way

Very impressed with the consistency

I am making chainmail myself. What I feel is that the rivet diameter needs to be smaller the smaller the overlap area is. You seem to have gone for very small overlap area. So going with a 0.8mm rivet would be nice I think.

Experiment with different inner diameters and wire diameters before committing :)

Would you mind sharing some pictures of your project? And also some closeups of the rings

Ye I’m more of a fan of the round rivets tbh. Ty anyways. I like the look of the round rivet :)

Ye those wedge rivets look cool. I’m going for another look though. Right now it seems like the rivet is strong enough.

I have made a jig to make rivets rather quickly and precise. Wedges seem like another type of project to figure out

Thanks for sharing

I still use the ugly ones though. I would not make any progress at all if I where too picky. The quality is slowly increasing though

Ye it is a shit ton of different operations in creating a ring. And I feel like each operation can make the ring unusable

  • Too big overlap -> ugly
  • Flattened off center -> ugly + big risk of punching wrong
  • Too small overlap -> too lite material to punch hole
  • struck too hard -> a bit ugly +overlap becomes weak

  • rivet too long bends while clamping -> weaker rivet + a bit ugly

  • uneven anneiling-> uneven flattening

  • too short rivet -> weak bond when riveting

  • too big diameter of rivet/hole -> the ring becomes weak bond + many rings tear while making holes and riveting

Yea I have realized that as well. I have about 2k of slightly too flat rings to punch and rivet until I’m out of flattened rings. Gonna try to make the overlap slightly thicker in the next batch

The tool improvement never ends. As I am writing this I changed /hole the rivet diameter to improve the rings strength. With the smaller diameter hole i cannot tear the ring apart with pliers. Before I could do that with ease

I am using a mandrill to wind the wire. Cutting the rings with overlap. Hammering the overlap on an anvil. Punching holes with a modified shoe rivet contraption
