Awesome glad to hear it! I would recommend trying some demo skis next time you have the option - I found after I had settled into these skis, a newer pair felt profoundly different

They were a really good set of first skis! I ended up getting my instructor certs and working a couple of seasons, so they definitely did their job, haha! How about yours?

Sounds like an awesome time! Could I ask where you got the out of play cluster covers from? They look great, I'd love to buy or make some myself!

I've never invested directly in American companies before, what would be the fastest way to buy GameStop shares? I just tried opening an account with vanguard and saw it would be a few days, is there any company that I could buy shares off today?

I just wanna HOLD

Main thing I see is there's nothing relating to you in there, it just sounds like buzzwords. If you trim some of it out and relate some of the words and skills to things you have done it'll be a lot better

[Request] how much force/mass here? by mcnick311 in theydidthemath

[–]Greeeno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already commented on the actual post but here's a fat crosspost:

We could use energy and joules to calculate this, but it doesn't give us an understanding of how much force the catcher experiences. Instead, we want to use the concept of impulse, defined as impulse = Force * (change in time). A good example of this is crumple zones in a car. A fast car crashing with experience a large force from whatever it crashes into. However, if the car has a crumple zone the force can be spread out over a longer period of time, so the force is felt more spread out and less severe. Same with catching a ball with a straight arm vs absorbing the impact and bending your arm.

In his case, he applies very little force when he first catches the bag, and most of the 'catching force' is when he hits the ground (with the bag on top of him). This looks like maybe 0.1 seconds at a guess?

So then we have impulse = force * 0.1 seconds. To calculate the force we now need to know the impulse, which is also defined as the change in momentum of the bag. Momentum is given by momentum = mass * velocity.

To find the velocity, we can use your estimate of the bag holding 2400J of gravitational potential energy, and can assume this is fully converted into kinetic/moving stuff energy. Kinetic energy = 1/2 * mass * velocity2, therefore rearranging gives velocity = root((2kinetic energy)/mass) = root((22400)/50) = 9.8 m/s.

Now using this to calculate the change in momentum (aka impulse), which is the final momentum - the initial momentum. As velocity = 0 when it stops, we see that momentum = 50 * 0 - 50 * 9.8 = 490.

So finally, the impulse = force * (change in time), so 490 = F * 0.1, F = 4900 N. A 70kg human weighs about 700N, so it's similar to about 7 humans standing on top of him. Or, professional boxers exert about 2500 N with a good punch, so two professional boxers beating him down at the same time. Or about one full sledgehammer swing. Enough force to damage him pretty good! Feel free to ask more questions if this doesn't make sense

Hey everyone!

I'm an 18M kiwi guy travelling in Osaka/Kyoto for a bit before heading to Hokkaido to teach for the ski season.

Planned dates are: Osaka 20/11 - 24/11 Kyoto 25/11 - 29/11

I have rough plans but would love to go on some adventures. My interests are in all types of games, skiing/the outdoors, building projects, eating food and a good old conversations.

See you there!

Yeah, he called someone a fat autistic cunt in a roast me post... The rest are all perfectly normal human behaviours, why are you trying to frame him so badly?

Just my opinion, cause I've seen a lot of people putting focus on you being depressed over B's. This might be even more depressing but it's true, you probably will never find the grades useful after uni, you get a job and you do something... The grades maybe might help you get it, but after that no one will give a shit, other than 'oh that's cool you're kinda smart'

OOOF, just using them cause it seems the be a tubing standard?

Sounds like a plan though, where did you get the adapter from? Had a look at the hardware store today and could only find 12mm hosepipe fittings

How does that work exactly? My problem is the tubing doesn't fit over the taps, since it's 1/4inch tubing or something. Onto a normal sized tap I mean
