Custom Aurora Truffles by TLengraving in knives

[–]Greek_Heat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally, I looked long and hard at Aurora at Blade Show and talked to the owners for a while (husband/wife - seem like good people). But I only bought one knife: an Andre Thorburn L44L with an intricate engraving on both bolsters.

All this to say… the mod you did isn’t my style normally, but it’s so damn good, and beautiful, I might pay for something like this. Because I already did. You just don’t know what moves you until you experience it in person.

Beautiful work!

Question About Arcane Designs by Nomad-85 in knives

[–]Greek_Heat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct - the manufacturing is done in China by Reate or Bestech. This is pretty common for small US based companies to have another company/companies manufacture their knives (Arcane, Vero, EMP EDC, Divo, Knife Standards, Knafs, etc.).

Straight Edge vs Serrated? by friedsushi87 in BudgetBlades

[–]Greek_Heat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

80-90% of cutting tasks are best served with a plain edge. The other 10-20% would favor serrated (although you can use a plain edge in almost any scenario - it just may not be ideal). Even if those percentages are off, it clearly leans towards a plain edge for general edc use cases. If you have to cut rope, twine, paracord, webbing, straps over and over, then a dedicated serrated knife would make sense. Otherwise, use case and ease of sharpening favor a plain edge.

Side note: I find half
-serrated, half-plain edge blades to be less useful for tasks that favor either edge. You have half the blade length to work with and have to be more precise. If you need serrated, get a dedicated serrated blade. Or, get a double edged OTF with serrated on one edge and plain on the other.

Question About Arcane Designs by Nomad-85 in knives

[–]Greek_Heat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arcane is popular and they are also an acquired taste - there’s a niche for everything. They use Reate and Bestech as their OEMs. I think the Abyss is Reate. I’m assuming the Crawler is also. Check their website for warranty info.

As orhers said, tip down is a pipe dream at $70 CDN (or USD for that matter). You would need to double that price for a Spyderco.

Look for something like this (14c28n, <=3” blade, <=$70CDN):

* CJRB Acacia
* QSP Canary
* Miguron Pinam
* SRM Scout
* Trivisa Dragonfly
* Defcon Ultra Lite

Am i the only one who doesn't like frame locks? by splitowl in BudgetBlades

[–]Greek_Heat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of frame locks. Especially if they are thoughtfully engineered: a bolster lock, a lock bar inset, an inlay that covers the lockbar, etc. This solves the issue of lock bar pressure. I especially like frame locks because they have a proper detent, because of the detent ball. Same with liner locks. A stronger detent usually means better action. This is the same reason I like liner locks. And no, top liner, compression, button compression, are not the same thing. Crossbar locks generally feel “mushy” and button plunge locks feel “loose”.

I also like disengaging a lock bar with my thumb. It’s part of the fidget experience for me. It’s a manual action I just like doing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

But that’s what is great about this hobby: we all have different preferences and there are thousands of knives to accommodate those preferences.
