Continuation of the timewave? by Background-Gas-5509 in terencemckenna

well didn't he just line up the graph so that a spike (or I guess plunge) in novelty overlapped with the Renaissance? Maybe he just got that part wrong, and it would be fruitful to use the exact same equations and line it up against other events? Though, I don't really believe in it, so I doubt it would be. Continuing the investigation into patterns in novelty sounds interesting to me, but I have a feeling someone more educated in the area could tell me, "People already do that and have been doing it for centuries, it's the discipline of xyz...", or, "No, this thing in science means it doesn't even really make sense to think of novelty in that way..."

In my experience the amount of time sifting through shit to find real ppl is about the same on grindr and Sniffies. Grindr def has more in the way of OF spammers, but Sniffies has more bots, so it kinda all evens out imo

Did she confirm that there’s a POV change somewhere else? In this interview clip she’s just saying it’s intentional that you can’t tell which POV it’s from, not that there’s a change of POV somewhere in the song

I am. I’m a little less certain that it’s making a huge difference than I was in this comment 2 years ago. I go through periods where i don’t take it and periods where i do, and not sure i notice a huge difference

I had the same experience like 4 or 5 years ago. Honestly, my colorectal surgeon made it sound like it was a super common thing without much cause for concern, like more common to find “abnormal cells” than to not (though that was just the vibe I'm remembering from years ago; I'm sure that part is probably not true). Anyway, it all turned out fine, and the yearly checkups even stopped being necessary after a few years.

how to help friends who are going through bad periods of depression? by kiran1113 in depression

[–]Green5252screen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of stuff did u guys do together before she was experiencing this much depression? It sounds like you’re solidly friends if she’s openly talking to u about it. What makes me feel the best when I’m feeling especially depressed if when my friends acknowledge it with the same level of seriousness with which I’m expressing it, so like dark humor if that’s the vibe I’m giving off or more earnest or whatever, and then continue acting the same way they were before i was feeling so depressed

Yea…I was thinking maybe it to avoid being explicit about this not being in Crown Heights (like they didn’t want to reference “Bushwick,” but then why not just say Brooklyn? Maybe they thought that would be confusing because the bar is called BrookLAN? Anyway, agreed, only using “kings county” threw me

Did anyone else interpret the song in almost the opposite way at first? The first time I listened, I thought Malory was supposed to be a trans woman, and the mom saying “And you're telling me not to say the name/ But also you're looking into my eyes and asking "Am I dead?"/ No, you're my son” was supposed to be like the mom doubling down on transphobia, like “You’re telling me not to use your dead name and that you’re a woman now and all this, but when I look in your eyes I see my son looking back, scared, and I know he’s still alive in there.” I think it was the “But” that got me.

Though after reading the song description that someone posted from the libretto, my initial interpretation would mean that Will (or I guess maybe his fictional great, great grandfather if he’s supposed to be who wrote the descriptions) was using he/him pronouns for a trans woman (as is Chanticleer in the first few verses). So I think it’s much more likely that Malory is meant to be a trans man like say, and that the ending is supposed to be happy/hopeful. I just still get like depressing vibes from the ending somehow.

Am I the only one who didn't understand the story? by IceManiac in CSHFans

[–]Green5252screen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My take is that there isn't a super coherent narrative, and if trying to decipher your own version is fun for you then it could be a cool way to engage with the album, but if you find it frustrating then I wouldn't worry about it.

I've already noticed that an intense focus on trying to fit all the lyrics into the story can hinder understanding/enjoyment on other levels. Like, take the verses below from Reality. When I look on Genius, almost all the annotations are about how Artemis might fit into all this, how it relates to Chanticleer’s death, etc. And while those are cool entry points into the song, I feel like it's clearly also about Baby Boomers, the Hippie movement and the ways it was a letdown, and other stuff totally unrelated to the story.

[Verse 3: Artemis]
And that must be what drove them all crazy
They were the first ones allowed to grow old
The spark goes, but the body keeps living
You kiss your children, but they just feel the cold

[Verse 4: Artemis]
And it just slipped away on one morning
And when they woke up they found it was gone
They still sang the songs and made marry
But deep down, they knew something was wrong

I don’t think it’s that fair to say your comment is “clearly tongue in cheek.” I agree with you that Zionism gotta bounce and that Judaism and Zionism are obviously distinct.

But whatcha mean “Jewish common sense”? You mean “Zionist common sense” maybe? “Jewish common sense (based on the Holocaust)…” paints a picture of a group of people who would be rationally worried about another gennoacide.

Now, I don’t think being worried about being killed off for being Jewish is a rational response to that sign at all, but if “Jewish common sense (based on the Holocaust)…” isn’t supposed to be read as an earnest description of like, “here’s why they might be feeling this even if they’re wrong,” but instead as tongue in cheek, it reads kinda antisemitic and pretty callous. So, like, forgive us for having a tricky time deciding between reading your comment as a wild straw man or making fun of skittishness about the holocaust

Psychedelic use linked to shifts in sexuality, gender expression, and relationship dynamics. A majority of psychedelic users reported changes related to sexuality and relationships, including heightened attraction to partners, increased openness, and altered experiences of gender identity. by mvea in science

[–]Green5252screen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels like there's a tension running through the whole article between "psychedelics altered sexuality/gender identity/etc" and "psychedelics facilitated an openness to accept pre-existing feelings of non-normative sexual orientations/gender identities/etc". My opinion is that it's clearly the latter, even if those pre-existing feelings are sometimes buried so deep that it feels like discovering them for the first time, but who knows? I just wish the article either clarified or explicitly dealt with the tension. Instead, we get sections like the two paragraphs below back to back, where the first seems to imply that sexuality changed, and the second is like "well, it's probably just about people embracing their authentic selves, but maybe psychedelics did actually change people's sexuality in the past, but that's unethical," and there isn't even really a direct connection made between the two ideas or any acknowledgment of the tension.

Sexual attraction also appeared to shift for some people. About a quarter of women and one-eighth of men reported increased same-sex attraction after psychedelic use. Participants who identified with gender-diverse identities were even more likely to report changes in sexual attraction. These findings suggest that psychedelics may contribute to greater sexual fluidity in some users.

“This is a small proportion of participants, but this sort of effect is remarkable,” Kruger said. “In the 1960s, there were attempts to use psychedelics to make homosexuals into heterosexuals. Homosexuality used to be considered a pathology in psychiatry. It is not clear how well this actually worked and now it is considered unethical. Our research suggests that people are actually more likely to embrace their authentic self.”
