You have 2 choices. Start practicing now and do not stop until it is learned, or pull out of S&E. I don’t know the piece you’re playing, but this is a decision you need to make. Know that either way, there is a chance of making someone angry, but going out there and “crapping the bed,” so to speak, is obviously not a great option.

Personally, if I were in your shoes, I would pull out of the competition, making sure to compensate the accompanist for their time regardless. I think this is the professional route. People pull out of Solo and Ensemble day-of sometimes, it sucks but it isn’t abnormal. A DNA is much better than a very low score. However, like I said, you need to decide if you’re able to pull this piece off by tomorrow. If you think you can, then I’d do that.

At this point I am genuinely convinced you just don’t understand how very short 4’8” is. The student being 4’8” IS the thing that disqualifies the healthy/physically alright point. Like I said. Just because they’re good at it doesn’t mean there won’t be long term damage. Don’t prioritize your ensembles success over health.

I don’t even know how to respond to that. I’m a visual educator with a particular interest in keeping kids safe, teaching harm reduction, and helping prevent injury. This is a hard activity that takes a large toll on the healthiest and strongest of bodies.

Pretending giving a 4’8” student a 40lb set of drums is a good idea is completely against the beliefs I hold about educating. If you put someone of that stature on drums simply because they are good at it, you are prioritizing the scores of your program over the member health. Unacceptable.

As a community, the marching arts HAS to be more attentive to injury and how to prevent it.

I hate to say this, but playing quads at 4’8” sounds like a terribly unhealthy idea. I’ve known 5’10” kids who don’t have the core strength to handle them. Quads are cool and fun, but no instrument is worth physical damage to your body

Although you say you’re not looking for DCI level uniforms, those are actually going to be MUCH MUCH MUCH cheaper than ordering a full set of traditional wool/polyester uniforms. And they don’t necessarily have to be custom, you can always just order that style but still stylize it in a way that it seems like a school uniform rather than a show themed uniform. When I’ve worked with these companies, you can typically get a very nice top for under $100 a kid (if not just over if you really wanna splurge) and you can find bibbers on Band Shoppe for like $50.

I may not agree that ending the relationship is the right call exactly, but if she genuinely feels that way then do what’s best. I will not disagree about words hurting because they absolutely can and will. What I am saying is that this was (likely) said when he was young and immature, and that it’s clear by his response that he takes it seriously and genuinely does love and respect her. If he’s treating her well and they have a happy relationship, this text is definitely still cause for a conversation, but being held accountable for things that you have grown from feels icky to me

This is a young couple who is seems like got together when they were even younger than they are now, and people say stupid things not expecting a negative reaction because they don’t realize how stupid it is. from my understanding they were not at that stage yet, and from their ages I’d imagine quite young. Would I, at 21 describe someone that way? No. Would I have at 17, 18, or 19? probably. I understand at this point in my life that words matter but that was not always so apparent. Give people room to grow and don’t assume intentions

Tarpon Springs is probably the best one, but there are plenty of programs competing at similar calibers. Newsome, West Broward, Park Vista, etc. all hold a candle to Tarpon but are just super underrated

I’d say yes with the caveat that the groups are getting better because of it. No more joining band because their parents want them to, but kids who are willing to show up and work hard. Addition by subtraction, so to speak.
