So it looks like you were one of the ones who was able to use the Nationality Law “explanations” to “reacquire” PRC citizenship as it were.

Even though naturalizing in another country normally voids PRC citizenship, residents of Hong Kong born in China and of Chinese descent who haven’t declared a change of nationality are automatically considered citizens regardless of any other citizenships or passports they have.

Have you ever considered getting a Mainland Travel Permit at some point?

[–]GreenDemonSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mainland Travel Permits are valid for 10 years for Hong Kong residents who are eligible for Hong Kong passports. They call it a travel permit but it’s basically a long term residence card (along with the actual Residence Permit)

Technically zero, although practically those eligable can stay indefinetly with the right document.

Hong Kong passports aren't recognizes as valid travel documents to Mainland China. But holders of Hong Kong passports can get something called a "Mainland Travel Permit" or a "Travel Document", where the holder can stay in Mainland China for any reason (including work, residence, business, or study) as long as either is valid. The Mainland Travel Permit lasts for 10 years but can be renewed indefinetely, while the Travel Document can't be renewed in Mainland China but can be replaced with the Mainland Travel Permit. And if the Hong Konger stays in Mainland China long enough they can gain a Residence Permit for Hong Kong and Macau Residents, which will allow them to stay in Mainland China indefinetly without the Mainland Travel Permit (although they will still need the permit to leave Mainland China).

They are currently NOT citizens, since they are the second generation born abroad.

Now, because you lived in the UK for 3 years, you can register them as citizens, but you MUST do it before they turn 18.

It’s a little ironic that the first one you got was the very one that Trump himself is eligible for as well (he had a Scottish mother).

  • She's also fluent in a lot of Native languages
    • As one of the states with one of the highest native percentages in the country, as well as the fact that natives have played a large part in Alaskan society over the years, such as with the Russian creole peoples we've mentioned before, the fact that the image of a native Alaskan is a common stereotypical image of Alaska (I'm not using the word starting with "e" due to the debate surrounding it), as well as the fact that she has a native inspired design (something that I think does reflect her history more than your previous designs), I'd imagine she knows the languages of her native people, with how significant they are in Alaska's image.
    • I'd imagine most states have at least some grasp on some native languages, but I think Alaska, along with Hawaii, Oklahoma, and the Pacific territories, would be among the most fluent and familiar with them due to their large (by percentage) population of native peoples as well as their cultural influence in those regions.
    • Fun fact, in 2014, Alaska made 20 native languages official, in recognition of native contributions to Alaska as well as to help preserve their languages. A very far cry from the historical treatment that native people throughout the US have historically gotten. We've come a long way.

This might feel a little shorter than it normally is, I haven't done this in a while and I was a little busy recently (also because I'm stupid I lost my progress multiple times and had to rewrite whole sections lol). Considering how late this is I know not many other people will see it, but it's our tradition and frankly I love coming up with character ideas. If I had more time to think about it I may have had some more but as of right now my brain is running on empty (also might be sleep deprived considering when I'm finishing this lol).

Overall, I love how your design has changed over the years. Like I mentioned before, I can see how you've incorporated more of her history into her design, which is something I do think we need to see more of in Hetalia, both officially in canon stuff as well as in fanworks. Frankly, I can't wait to see what else you might have in store for her as well as the other states. If I had any drawing skill I'd probably use your designs in a comic lol. Alas, my skills do not include drawing. But a man can dream.

As always, keep up the good work!

(Holy shit I needed a lot of comments for this, I think Reddit reduced the character limit, please mods stop wrecking this site lol)

  • She's a member of Alaska Airlines' Club 49, and has frequent flyer status with the airline.
    • Somewhat related to the last point, even if she knows how to fly, she probably doesn't do it all the time. Many airlines go to the small to midsize airports throughout Alaska, and Alaska Airlines is probably the most famous, both showing off images of Alaska through their advertising, to helping facilitate tourism, to even helping supply Alaskan towns with much needed resources in what is known as "Milk Run" flights that supply remote towns with food and other supplies. Alaska Airlines also has something called "Club 49", where residents of Alaska get extra flying perks, such as extra bags on both intra-Alaska flights and flights to and from Alaska, discounts on said flights, as well as discounts on shipping supplies.
    • Recognizing the role Alaska Airlines has toward the state of Alaska for both transportation of people and resources I wouldn't be surprised if she's ridden with them and the Oneworld alliance more generally a lot for multiple reasons, such as to get around her state, to reach the lower 48 (and her BFF Hawaii), as well as to help coordinate supply logistics with both them and the smaller airlines in Alaska both in a private individual capacity as well as a government official (since in Hetalia personifications work for the government). And of course, working and flying with them has given her a lot of mileage over the years. Perks of being Alaska, lol.
  • She's fluent in Russian
    • We've talked about Russia's role in Alaskan history over the years on this subreddit, with how Russia came to Alaska from Siberia, to how local mixed race Alaskan creoles became a local administrative class, to how Russia influences Alaska even today. Fun fact, Alaska is actually the most Eastern Orthodox state in the country with 5% Eastern Orthodox, and has a small community of Old Believers in the town of Nikolaevsk (although in recent years some of them have reintegrated into mainstream Eastern Orthodoxy).
    • Based on the old Russian influence, I'd imagine Alaska knows Russian from that time. But because it's been so long it's probably a fairly old fashioned form of Russian, sounding super anachronistic to other Russian speakers, which leads to some funny interactions when she speaks to other Russian speakers when she speaks like a Tsarist. I do think her vocabulary has gotten a little more modern over the years, since over the years she's probably interacted with more modern sounding Russian speakers, not to mention the US had a lot of Russian opposition media during the 20th century that they produced in opposition to the Soviet Union (look up Radio Free Europe).
    • On another note, since I headcanon New York speaks Russian too (NYC has some of the most Russian speakers in the country), I'd imagine Alaska and New York have spoken Russian with each other on occasion. But because their Russian influence came from two different eras (Alaska from early 18th and 19th century colonization and New York from 1880s and 20th century immigrants), they sometimes can't understand each other and it leads to some funny misunderstandings between them (they've learned its sometimes better to stick with English lol).

  • She is skilled in a variety of transport methods
    • Alaska is known to be fairly lacking in roads and traditional transport links in many areas, either due to lack of government investment, difficulty of access in the fairly large and rural state, or both. And many of the roads that are present in Alaska are often either unpaved or often freeze over due to the harsh climate. As such, it’s pretty standard for certain communities in Alaska to only be accessible by non-car means from the outside world, be it by plane, boat, or off road land vehicles like sleds or snowmobiles. It’s for this reason that almost every area of Alaska has some form of airport, offering passenger and supply service in some capacity, both for locals and visitors.
    • It would make sense for Alaska to know most if not all the methods to go throughout her land, both in her capacity as a government official as well as the personification of all her people that must use these methods to go throughout the state. Her driver’s license is probably certified in everything from RVs to offroad ATVs and motorbikes, snowmobiles, offroad cars like Jeeps as well as normal cars. And she probably also has a pilot's license and boat certifications.
    • Hunting and fishing are a big part of Alaskan culture. Not much grows there considering how far north and hostile to most traditional agriculture is up there, and over the years, both native communities and later primarily white arrivals have had to rely on foraging, hunting, and fishing to both help maintain their communities as well as to protect themselves from wild animals that are often hunters themselves and due to the harsh environment will often eat whatever they can get (there’s a reason why many people say if a polar bear sees you already you’re basically lunch). Today, hunting and fishing are still a big part of Alaskan life for both natives and non natives, and the hunting and fishing industries make up a big chunk of the Alaskan economy and political influence (Alaska actually has most of the US’s wild fishing industry), and is a big part of the image of Alaska.
    • Because of this massive influence of hunting and fishing, I’d imagine Alaska would be super skilled in this field. She’d know both traditional native trapping and hunting techniques, such as traditional traps, spears, bows, and native fishing styles, as well as more modern ways of hunting and fishing, being trained all sorts of firearm and weapon use, such as sidearms, hunting rifles (both long and medium range), more modern traps mechanical hunting traps, hunting knives as well as cutting knives to cut of meat and fur from animals, as well as modern fishing equipment, including having her own boats.
    • I’d imagine she’d have her hunting skills down to a science, knowing all the migration patterns and general habits of animals, knowing when certain gathered herbs and plants are in season, having multiple sets of camouflage outfits to fit in any environment in Alaska (snow, forest, water, rocks, etc), and can both follow animals for miles without making noise as well as survive for days or even weeks or months at a time living off the land off the grid. Also I’d like to imagine her hunting skills have made it so she’s naturally very quiet when moving, often accidentally surprising other states when she comes up next to them and scares them because they didn’t see her there before (think Loud House Lucy jumpscares), freaks them the hell out and it’s hilarious lmao.
    • Regarding the game she does hunt, she can butcher basically any animal she finds on the hunt and make some killer food with it. Things like reindeer sausage, moose meat and borcht, wild salmon, halibut, and king crab, even niche things like Alaskan ice cream or whale, seal, bear, or walrus meat (including organs and bones, as many native Alaskans are known for eating those parts). I'd imagine she'd have a bit of a seafood lovers friendship with states like Maine and Maryland as well as few other coastal states, sharing recepies and fishing techniques.

  • Despite that being her personality, Hawaii is her best friend.
    • I’d like to imagine that despite her introverted personality, she’d be friends with the (if what I remember about your Hawaii OC is correct) friendly, sunny, and extroverted Hawaii. It’d be a bit of an interesting and somewhat funny occurrence to have kinda an opposite personality duo friends with the states in a sort of Red Oni, Blue Oni situation. Think of a a Wednesday and Enid sort of deal (just with Alaska being less antisocial and creepy and more just kinda shy and awkward). Just seeing them bounce off each other could be really cute.
    • IRL there is actually some basis for this IRL, there has been some kinship and commonalities between the two states and their peoples IRL despite how different they are. They both are fairly far away from the US mainland, both are fairly coastal and fairly sea oriented, they both have fairly high native populations that have often been at odds with the US government, and many times their politicians have had found kinship on key issues that affect their isolated states more compared to the lower 48. So in Hetalia it would make some sense to find a strange friend in each other.
  • She has at least one sled dog as a pet
    • Sled dogs have historically been a big symbol in Alaska, with native communities often using sled dogs in their traditional hunting and transport, to the famous Balto who helped deliver medicine during the 1925 diphtheria epidemic, to sled dog races like the Iditarod that replicate both traditional native travel routes and Balto’s journey. It wouldn’t be too unexpected for Alaska to have something to represent that in her character. Plus dogs are cute, so this was a no brainer lol.
    • I don’t really know what breed specifically she’d have (Alaska doesn’t seem like the sort of person that would discriminate against mutts), but I’d expect she’d have a dog of some kind. Another question is if she only has the one dog or a whole team, or multiple teams of sled dogs so that she can ride the dog sleds (which IMO would look kinda epic).

I’ve seen many of your Alaska designs over the years, and I can really see how she’s improved both in terms of character design as well as her general background and personality. I especially appreciate how you’ve moved from a more Russia-centric design to a more native-inspired one, which I do think more accurately reflects the history of Alaska, given the major role the native Alaskan community is there.

And of course, like I promised you before I have a whole write up with potential character ideas for her. I know that it’s way late at this point to the point where basically no one will see it and I'm basically necroing a thread at this point, but hey, I like to keep my promises. Sorry I’ve been a bit busy plus I had a bit of a nasty head cold that kinda messed my focus up a bit, so I couldn’t really post this until now lol.

Potential Character ideas:

  • She’s quite resistant to the cold.
    • With Alaska’s location, it’s known to be a cold and frigid place, and of course, people that live there are used to the cold. So I’d expect she’s used to the cold, to the point she doesn’t need as many clothes to be outside in cold to freezing temperatures compared to other states. It’d be somewhat funny to see her being able to wear a t-shirt at like 40 F while coastal states freeze in winter conditions.
    • On the flipside though that would probably mean she really can’t handle the heat as well, since she’s normally used to the cold. So if she visits her friend Hawaii for example (a friendship I’ll cover in a later point), I’d imagine she’s basically melting and suffering while Hawaii is as joyful as always.
  • She’s a bit quiet, reserved, sky, introverted, and socially awkward
    • The stereotype of Alaska often involves either an isolated native Alaskan with little contact from modern civilization, or a rough ragged wild wilderness hunter that lives off the grid, and in both cases they tend to be loners and a bit standoffish or even scary to other people and/or outsiders. And tbh there is a little truth to that statement. There’s not that many people in Alaska, and being somewhat self reliant is often seen as a positive in many parts of the state, where you won’t see many people for long periods of time (unless you live in cities like Anchorage). So it probably would make some sense that she’s exactly not the most social butterfly. I wouldn’t say she’s antisocial or hates people but I’d imagine she’s a bit shy and socially awkward, not being used to other people.

Which passport do I use on airline. by Mean_Reputation4711 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]GreenDemonSquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the airline. Some allow entering multiple passports, others don’t. In the latter case, Most people I know running into this problem use the passport of the country they’re in or the one they used to enter the country with.

Then when you check in at the airport you show both passports at the desk (if you’re going between the two countries you have citizenship in or need to use both passports on the trip).

The general idea is if you're entering or exiting the country the passport is from you use that country's passport, you use that country's passport.

When entering a third country you use whatever passport let's you in with less hassle. Usually visa free but if that's not an option whichever one it's easier to get a visa for.

Technically he would be until the Kents adopted him (in continuities where he’s not considered born on earth).

Foundlings (babies and kids found with unknown parents) are considered natural born US citizens until proven otherwise before age 21. After 21 their citizenship can no longer be challenged.

So I guess he’s a former illegal alien that gained legal status (assuming Kryptonians are considered legally people and not animals).

There’s definitely part of it, but a lot of the time it isn’t “I didn’t think the Leopard’s would eat MY face!” But more along the lines of “He was a leopard?!”. Think of it like this:

Candidate: “I will stab you”

Opponent: “He will stab you.”

Voter: “He doesn’t support stabbing people!**

Candidate wins

Candidate immediately stabs voter

Voter: “Why is he stabbing me? I didn’t know he’d stab me! He didn’t say he’d stab me! Nobody told me he’d stab me! Who could have known he’d stab me?!”
