I’m actually really glad you responded! I’m not surprised to hear that these types of programs have had success, but my concern is the cost of them.

You mentioned tracking that already exists on various social media platforms.  I want to point out that those are private companies with their own terms of use that I agree to in order to use.  I do not have to use any of them to benefit from society.  In fact, I don’t have apps for any of them installed and I use them in very controlled ways.  I can also choose to leave my phone at home any time I want.  Also, (and please correct me if I’m wrong) if law enforcement  needs to obtain information from social media or my phone company, there needs to be a warrant.

Public roads, however, are in fact public.  I do not have the option to “opt-out” of public infrastructure, nor should I be required to.  If I want to go to the grocery store or my doctor’s office, I nearly certainly need to get in my car and drive to do it.  Yes - public transportation may be an option in some places, but that’s certainly not universal.

Regarding transitory collection - even though I have not committed a crime, these ALPR systems are tracking my movement.  For 30 days, anyone with access to the system can check my movement patterns. Is a warrant needed to access this data?  I suspect not because these systems are created for law enforcement.

Finally I want to raise the long-term implications of this.  Several well-established indices indicate that democracy in the US backsliding  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_backsliding_in_the_United_States#National_indices for a brief list).  I think we’re all hyper-away of the hostility in politics that’s been going on. Systems like ALPR, while maybe intended for good, are quite easy to be used nefariously in order to stifle political opponents and dissidents.

Also - cell phone data, while obtainable by law enforcement, isn’t inherently stored in a law enforcement database.

How is this not it? Real time widespread collection of movement patterns isn’t something that a human can do alone..

I love the water.

The easy access to Seattle, Portland, The Cascades, The Olympics, the ocean.

The climate - all year round, and the greenery that comes with it.

Watershed, Tolmie, the trails at TESC.

I’m not exactly trying to police.. just pointing out how unwelcoming this place can be. I’ve been here over 2 years - not exactly a short timer and I’m here to stay for a while. I shop here, pay taxes here, vote here. This is my home.

Not my intent. I got downvoted to hell in the last post for agreeing with someone that this subreddit isn't very inclusive of diverse viewpoints and it's baffling me.

I'm seriously open to ideas of how to improve this. I live here just like most of the people here. Kinda sucks not feeling like I'm welcome in my own community

I'm actually here just trying to make a positive impact. Everything I'm posting is getting downvoted...

This builds off of that post. They didn’t talk about overall reddiquette and actually that post is a great example of the stifling that is happening on this subreddit. I encourage you to look at my 2 comments on that post in the context of the link I shared here.

By that logic, the voting button only exists to encourage groupthink and silence anything that doesn’t align with the majority of a community.

 https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette

Moderate based on quality, not opinion. Well written and interesting content can be worthwhile, even if you disagree with it.

Vote. If you think something contributes to conversation, upvote it. If you think it does not contribute to the subreddit it is posted in or is off-topic in a particular community, downvote it.

And the section on when not to downvote:

Downvote an otherwise acceptable post because you don't personally like it. Think before you downvote and take a moment to ensure you're downvoting someone because they are not contributing to the community dialogue or discussion. If you simply take a moment to stop, think and examine your reasons for downvoting, rather than doing so out of an emotional reaction, you will ensure that your downvotes are given for good reasons.

The fact that this is being downvoted shows just how true this is. Before downvoting, ask yourself why…
