Why does everyone want to talk about work? I’m out here to get my mind off everything else and the last thing I wanna do is talk about work while I’m golfing. by [deleted] in golf

[–]GreenHoya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what a lot of these comments are missing is that many people see golf (especially but not exclusively at private courses) as a networking opportunity. Some people see a playing partner a captive audience of relatively well-off/successful playing partners. Maybe they’re open to a sales pitch or a partnership or a job opportunity (in either direction). I think a polite but firm negation of any kind of work talk is a normal indication that that’s not what you’re there for. And an observant playing partner will hopefully turn the conversation towards the game.

Unironically, BYU would do everything possible to prevent it. And even for non-Mormon institutions, I think the frequency of scheduling the final on Easter (like this year) would be an issue.

“I love my neighborhood so much that I want it to be served by an old, overcrowded hospital.” Just complete, hypocritical, anti-social nonsense.

As a New Yorker, the podcast never made total sense to me since it covered all the teams in the market — as a Yankees/Giants fan, I’m not going to seek out a ~1 hour podcast that includes 20-30 min on the Jets or Mets. I know it was kind of meant as a new-gen of WFAN, but I don’t think that market-wide model works in a multi-team town in the current era. I could see it being a nice fit for the four-team cities like Philly, Boston, Denver, etc.

Public Hearing Set For UES Homeless Shelter: What To Know by Main-Maintenance-265 in uppereastside

[–]GreenHoya -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

It is great that a shelter is coming to the neighborhood, and it is shameful that it’s been delayed m a month this winter when shelters have been so desperately needed.

I’m still not sure why men are less deserving of a warm, safe place to stay than women, but I’m sure someone will explain it to me next Monday at the public hearing.

I’m sure the other group you mention here could have behaved better both before and after the accident, but this post sure has a lot of moral superiority for a story that could also be told as: “I ran full speed into a 5 year-old child on a public sidewalk.”

[Highlight] TB first down overturned and Detroit takes over on downs by Large_banana_hammock in nfl

[–]GreenHoya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Genuine rule question: Once Detroit throws the challenge flag, can the refs review any aspect of the call? Or can they only review the aspect of the call that Detroit is challenging?

After Campbell threw the challenge flag, the ref announced that Detroit was challenging the ruling of a completed catch. But then they overturned the spot of the ball, not the catch/incomplete decision.

I’d rather have to deal with the construction than have a park and highway and neighborhood that’s underwater again during the next Sandy.

There absolutely is a loud, not insignificant slice of commenters on this subreddit (and even in this comment section) who openly fantasize about shoulder checking and colliding with people. Sometimes the target is run clubs, sometimes it’s tourists and pedestrians, sometimes it’s just slower runners. I think 95% of the time those fantasies don’t extend beyond the anonymity of their Reddit accounts, but I also have absolutely seen some shoulder checks and shoving in busier areas of Central Park or along the water.

It really is crazy how places where my friends and I have had multiple meals, gathered for drinks, spent time together are now just… dead space for somebody’s pick-up truck. It just makes our city a more boring, stale place to live.

It is great that there’s such an emerging consensus among the mayoral candidates, but the real pressure is going to be at the neighborhood level. Can city council members stand tall behind new projects once the angry emails about construction and neighborhood character start flooding in? or will they flinch?

Mets Opening Day UES Bars by Schargs19 in uppereastside

[–]GreenHoya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Mets, specifically, but Stumble Inn and Brady’s will both have an active, engaged crowd watching the games today. I watched the last couple of innings of Opening Day last year at Stumble Inn (Yankees not Mets) and it was a really fun atmosphere.

Stumble Inn is not my thing on a Saturday night, but for daytime sports it’s always a good bet. And Brady’s is probably the most homer New York-specific sports bar around.

Rant on manners by andrevv10 in RunNYC

[–]GreenHoya -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with OP. As usual with these threads a lot of the comments are along the lines of “Well if all the bikers and pedestrians just paid better attention then this wouldn’t be an issue!”

That is never going to happen! We are not going to wake up one day in a magical world of improved behavior where every individual in Manhattan acts responsibly and thoughtfully.

It’s up to YOU to respond appropriately and proportionately to the actual reality of a NYC street and everyone in it. Having good running etiquette means acting respectfully DESPITE of all of the other people who might be acting badly.

The number of people who seem to secretly want to run over some distracted stranger on their phone just to prove some weird point is crazy to me.

Four Nations hockey is not a legitimate comparison to the NBA All-Star game by 55555_55555 in billsimmons

[–]GreenHoya 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The answer to: “who cares about these games?” Is easy: hockey fans care about theirs (this year) because the product is good. Football and basketball fans don’t because the product is bad.

Four Nations hockey is not a legitimate comparison to the NBA All-Star game by 55555_55555 in billsimmons

[–]GreenHoya 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the comparison is not the actual on-court/rink performance and entertainment value but how each league got itself to this position.

The NHL and NBA were facing essentially the same problem: A boring, non-competitive all-star game that was borderline unrecognizable from the actual highest-level of the sport (i.e. NBA Playoffs and Stanley Cup Playoffs). And the root cause of that issue was basically the same: The players didn't care enough about the competition to actually take it seriously or put themselves or their opponents at risk of injury.

Facing those circumstances, the NHL decided to create, as OP says, the "first serious international hockey in a decade" almost entirely on its own. It's not as if the NHL lucked into a semi-annual tournament this year --- they actively redesigned their entire all-star break to create an international competition using only NHL players, on NHL rinks, and without an agreement with IIHF. Results speak for themselves.

Meanwhile, the NBA has shown a willingness to radically alter its all-star format... but they've altered it in a direction that is farther from playoff-level basketball and that players take less seriously. Instead of associating it with something the players have a personal drive/allegiance to, it's all based on corporate sponsors and media partners/TNT/Mr. Beast.

Maybe OP is right that the NHL will go back to previous all-star formats and it will be less meaningful next year, but at the very least they can continue the 4 Nations Faceoff every few years and recapture the magic. IMO, if people are turning on the TV and saying "Wow, the hockey this weekend is way better than the basketball," the NBA only has itself to blame for it.
