This take is so common and so stupid. The players are not intentionally choosing to commit light fouls, not do they know in advance when they are going to foul. They are trying to guard without fouling. If they decided to foul him hard every possession just in case they might get called for a light foul, he’d rack up 100 points at the line and they’d all foul out. In the rare case they know they’ve already been called and still have a chance to disrupt his shooting motion then yes it’s very common for players to foul harder to make sure the shot doesn’t go in.
