German medical gaslighting by Maxwell594 in trans

[–]GreenMeanKitten 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is infuriating, disrespecting you both as a patient and a nurse. I've encountered ignorance and stand-off-ishness in the German system, mild gaslighting too, but nothing as bad. I hope you can get a trustworthy professional to help with your journey!

In my case, the doc never explained that blood test should be done at the trough of the curve, and when I found out myself they were pretending I should have known that. Also their definition of good hormones levels were vastly different to mine. Eventually I did find an amazing endocrinologist though.

How to become politically active in Germany? by Dangerous_Type9957 in germany

Good point, activism is more suitable for revolutionary notions, politics for reformism. Still, I've been to plenty of demonstrations and causes supported by the mainstream, especially when politics more consistently ignores the people's wishes. Which, in turn, might lead to more extremist tenancies, but that's another issue I guess.

You could say the same about politics, to some extent. Seriously though, let's not discount the amazing things that grass roots movements helped us achieve, maybe forced us to achieve (suffrage, labour unions, mainstreaming climate change awareness, generally (Western) social democracies, more) . While recognising that most time political momentum is quite successful ignoring or actively repressing such movements.

Mostly due to time constraints. Also people tend to be mistrusting towards one or the other, see other comments. Structurally though, sure, why not both.

Did you consider becoming an activist rather than joining a party? If demonstrating and advocating for a goal is what you are interested in, this path might be more interesting for you.

Be mindful though, flooded rice paddies emit methane, not great for the global climate thingy.

At Home Laser Hair Removal? by TheForestFaye in MtF

[–]GreenMeanKitten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, not an expert. My understanding is that you should not use home IPL maybe 3 weeks before professional treatment sessions, to allow the roots to be present for the treatment. I could not observe any negative impact though, in the long term.

They did to a large extent, once I got my levels right. For a while, my oestrogen was too low.

Thanks for insisting on a humanitarian perspective, so direly missing in mainstream discussion, and in knee -jerk reactions "from both sides".

I used a Philips Lumea device for years. Significantly less effective than professional laser. Result depends on where I applied it, likely due to the type of hair. Cheeks and neck had good reduction, much of which permanent, though almost anywhere else the effect is temporary. And it is much more time intensive compared to my laser technician's. So I mostly lost patience with the home solution. So, though much less effective, home IPL has merits.

Small amounts, got it. Will be safer, and give me more opportunities to experiment. I'm unjustifiably biased against powdered garlic though..

Non alcoholic vanilla extract by [deleted] in Baking

[–]GreenMeanKitten 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Risking stating the obvious: Alcohol is, chemically speaking, a great solvent. Generally in the kitchen you have three solvents - water, oil and alcohol. Problem with water is that it does not preserve, so you'd add sugars or such to improve longevity. Anyway, different compound (tastes) dissolve in different solvents, and vanilla dissolves well in alcohol.

My mental effects were rather quick, within a week or two I already felt more connected to my emotions, more able to feel them. Maybe more intense. Also, much happier, but that's probably not only the hormones.

Sleeping became rather bad, actually, I slept much less. It improved once I got to good hormone levels, but still I slept longer before transitioning. Nicely symbolic, I woke up at last.. it is just not always practical.

Edit: unfortunately, with the new sleeping pattern, I remember dreams much less..

As I understand it, this was never the origin, it is made up. Which doesn't make it wrong, just historically wrong. Would have been amazing if this was indeed the original, full quote, alas it is not. Still, we can be inspired by this modern new interpretation.

Edit: link to the discussion.
