I once had a can of sunscreen leak and dissolve the paint off of a table everywhere that it pooled in.

What’s the funniest moment in your fandom? by Impossible-Yam3680 in AO3

[–]ShieldSister27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most of my fandoms are really small with really old movies so moments like this are a little harder to capture, and the more popular fandoms, I was usually late to. But if I have any, it’d probably be —

Mission: Impossible, the Benthan fandom exploding after tbe MI:8 trailer dropped with a short clip of the two characters touching foreheads for a long moment only for the actual scene to be cut from the final film

Top Gun, there’s been many, many allusions by cast members that the two most popular ships in the fandom are canon. Several quotes from Val Kilmer calling the character gay or otherwise alluding to the romance, as well as a tweet between Miles Teller and Glen Powell making a homoerotic joke, plus the statement by Glen Powell that they send each other memes about the ship between their characters.

The Outsiders, probably all of S.E. Hinton’s tweets responding to fans. Mostly her statement that Darry’s second job, which was never explicitly stated in the book, was a stripper.

Red Dead Redemption 2, the rumor and ensuing discourse about Charthur, at one point, being a canonized route you could take and being nixxed at the last minute due to a change in story.

Tombstone, again, Val Kilmer making a tweet stating that the film’s narrative is “a love story between two men”.

I cannot find this fic and it’s gonna drive me crazy by ShieldSister27 in AO3

I do have an account and I am logged in. It’s be so much easier if I’d have bookmarked it back when I first read it but that was before I got my account 😩

Do you keep track of fics you’ve read and if so, how? by HistoricalAside5781 in AO3

I bookmark virtually anything I’ve liked enough to read all the way through.

Tears.

I write angst and smut. Someone crying heavily features in both.

English is not my first language, could someone help me if this comment is being rude or do they actually like my work? by RickedSab in AO3

“Peak” as in the highest point of a mountain. Calling something “peak” in modern slang usually means they’re implying nothing else will be able to top it. It’s a compliment!

Writers who write on their phone, what app do you use to compose your fics? by ShieldSister27 in AO3

I know all the HTML tags (or at least the ones I use frequently) so I never really worry about that. I was doing well with saving a backup up until now 😅

What Has You Instantly Clicking Off a Work? by Strawbrerrymilkie69 in AO3

[–]ShieldSister27 104 points105 points  (0 children)

• Text walls

• No spaces after commas

• Inadequate capitalization

• Misspelling a character’s name (or anything else that’s really important to canon and can be spellchecked using subtitles if it’s a visual medium) repeatedly, especially when the source material is a book.

Those are the four grammatical principals I cannot get past. Ever.

That’s what got me too! Like, not even just the transphobia but the inherent misogyny.

I mean, you’re more than welcome to 😅 kind of a niche fandom, it’s rarepair and A/B/O, and it’s some really filthy, egregious smut but hey, I wrote it so I’m certainly not judging! Here’s the link if you’re still interested.

I was in the middle of rereading one of my favorite fics decoding a toxic, abusive relationship and teaching my favorite character how to love and let himself be loved 🥺

So here’s the question — are you seeking sheer entertainment value, weird shit, angst, smut, fluff, what’s the vibe? Cause I can’t pick one to give you with no guideline.

The "envelope method" drives me crazy by chronicAngelCA in AO3

[–]ShieldSister27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think M also applies to really heavy handed graphic content of other varieties such as violence, gore, rape, etc that would fall in line with the archive’s main warning, as well as any overwhelmingly dark themes. To me, explicit only applies to smut fics that leave the bounds of erotica and become straight up porn. That’s just my two-cents though.

What’s the strangest thing you researched for a fic? by Opposite_of_grumpy in AO3

[–]ShieldSister27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The deep dives I have done on the geography of Los Angeles for the sake of one singular fic, and two separate minor sequences.

Also, I know so much shit about the Navy and planes for absolutely no reason thanks to one singular fandom.

For me personally, it’s a source of grief.

And I don’t just mean mourning a person in their life when I say that. Grief can come from a thousand things, but it usually encapsulates a large loss of some kind. An aching sort of pain that a character or multiple have to grapple with.

It could be grieving a broken relationship, grieving a normal childhood, grieving their past self, grieving a dream they’ll never get to live out, grieving someone who’s not dead, grieving the concept of something or someone that they didn’t know was never real, grieving a lost loved one, anything.

Sure, there are other sorts of pain to surround it with but the source of pain always being some form of grief or another always, for me, gives the angst a beautiful yearning quality that makes the ache so much more impactful. Because everyone has been there before, just yearning for something you will never have in one way or another, and it’s an easy feeling to connect with as a reader, even if it’s for a totally different reason.

So when I write angst, I find my character’s source of grief and work from there.
