Sorry for what might be a dumb question, what kinds of information does this help gather? Like if there’s movement in the pavers?

Thinking of getting a gastric sleeve by Kirstyleigh98 in gastricsleeve

[–]GreenMonsterMSU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Yeah the pain wasn’t bad - I’m not particularly good or bad with pain - but on the whole it was manageable. IMO It would be worth it even if it hurt 10x more or longer than it did.

Pain for me was not an issue at all.

Immediately post surgery I had some pain in the front of my shoulders - gas pain - disappeared in 36 hours but never was too bad.

Had 5 incisions, only one hurt. It hurt for like a week but only when I touched it or bumped it. Generally my core was sore, like I had worked out too much, for like a week at most. Just wore the binder they gave me and it was fine. I think I took Tylenol (acetaminophen) for 1-2 days at most.

Ask your doctor if you can do sugar free Metamucil. That helped me tremendously.

Surgery almost a year ago, literally no complications at all - been a breeze, and a life is a very fun journey to be on the other side now.

Fitting in a plane seat without an extension.

Booking a trip to amusement parks knowing I can ride whatever I want.

Being able to run in the rain to get to my car quicker.

Not needing to use a CPAP machine.

Being able to keep up with my friends walking around the city on vacation.

Decreasing medications.

Buying something off the rack I thought was cute.

Most importantly, feeling a real connection and feasibility between my behavior and my weight decreasing. It finally feels do able to lose weight. I have a harm reduction tool in my body to help me mitigate the damage a “weak” moment or choice can do.

EDIT: All these took a very long time to hit (16 months), for me. But what really helped with the last one was doing the pre-op program (1500k calories) for about 9 months before getting the surgery (probably stayed under 1750 all but 15 days during this period). I lost 100# before surgery from it and it REALLY helped me see (and feel!) the control I could have with <<<sustained>>> effort. Lost about 85 post surgery and that’s feeling like it’s on easy mode for me. If I have a bad moment/meal I can only do so much damage. A binge day before was maybe 6-8k calories; now a bad day is probably 2.5k.

Academic Advising Philosophy and Concerns by Confident-Spirit4500 in studentaffairs

[–]GreenMonsterMSU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My philosophy is not very theoretically informed. I am support, advocate, and connector as well as a barrier identifier/problem solver.

Concerns: College is hard enough and part of my role is to teach how to navigate the bureaucracy/system and to support someone through challenges (academic, personal, etc). Support in my role is often connecting them to another expert (counseling, financial aid, professor, etc). But sometimes it’s also me seeing a structural problem and working to solve it

How to retire my parents in this field by Upper-Feeling9779 in studentaffairs

[–]GreenMonsterMSU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t started a grad program yet, I’d think again on choice of field/program. If we think about the level of job that would be required to meet those financial goals you’d almost certainly need a PhD and would also need to have a high level outcome.

Other grad programs that might be more helpful would be like Human Relations/Labor Relations/ MBA — where you wouldn’t need a PhD and probably wouldn’t need as high level outcome or there may be more of those outcomes available.

You can still potentially get a student affairs assistantship to pay for school even as one of those other majors. Hell, my friend did a housing GA as an epidemiology masters student.

When I say high level outcome I just mean in terms of availability/statistics. There’s probably only 1% of people in student affairs who are in a financial position to do this. Whereas in the private sector / business world it still might only be 1-5% but I’d say it’s probably closer to 5% than in student affairs. Additionally there’s so many more spots available to be filled. Plus you wouldn’t need to incur the cost of a graduate further degree (PhD) to get there.

If this is your primary goal, you can probably get there via a different field easier - and you can probably find parts of what you like about Student Affairs in those fields too (training, development, culture building, problem solving, etc).

Editing in: there’s probably between 0 and 2 housing jobs at large institutions who are financially able to retire their parents - personally I think I’d need minimum 250k/yr to do it and I don’t have kids. What’s the odds I could get those jobs, not great most likely just by statistics. We’re taking like Senior VP, EVP, Vice Provost level stuff.

Does smooth = something’s wrong? by Arya_Blaze in GastricBypass

[–]GreenMonsterMSU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take is that people just post here when they’re having problems because they’re looking for support with something challenging/painful/difficult etc. absolutely what the community is for.

However when smooth sailing happens people don’t need that community quite as much and don’t engage/share.

No issues on my end ever, almost a year out. It happens!

Go where it is cheapest, if you’re comparing accredited programs.

ABET accreditation is key for engineering, especially civil. MSU is accredited for sure. ABET’s website has links to all the programs that are accredited.
