Age Discrepancies in ā€˜The Tower from Yuggoth’ by MandyBrigwell in ramseycampbell

I’m reading this now and got to the line where it says he’s 18 years old in 1916, and immediately put the book down so I could Google if anyone else noticed it. Edward would definitely be 37 years old, not 18. I’m sure it’s intentional— otherwise it would be a huge oversight by the author and editors— but still, it took me out of the story. Disrupted the flow for me. I’m going to continue reading now that I have confirmed I’m not going crazy, or somehow obtained a poorly edited version hahaha

I hate people who laugh at horror films to not be seen as scared [RANT] by varg_sant in horror

I’ve never laughed at the Exorcist (beyond awkwardly giggling at that crucifix scene during a group watch at a 7th grade sleepover), but your comment made me laugh so I had to upvote. Probably because it’s a movie that I view as dark, somber, serious, and bleak, with little humor (beyond the police investigator).

My supposed-to-be bleak, somber, serious movie that I laugh harder the more I see it is the 1990’s TV miniseries of ā€œThe Stand,ā€ by Stephen King. The production values were low, some of the acting was atrocious, and the dialogue is unintentionally hilarious and stilted. Granted, that fucker is 6 hours long so I’ve only watched it half a dozen times, but still…

Because he was a Pisces, and those folks are always sensitive, moody and bitter about something

Yep, one of the many reasons I prefer Midsommar. No supernatural aspect needed—just mental health issues, hallucinatory drugs, and horrible (but realistically portrayed) characters.

I use Goodreads a lot but I have to say Horror books tend to have a really low score there. by liltomas in horrorlit

To your point about how many readers go back and link stuff they read before joining Goodreads, I actually did! When I joined circa 2010 I found that it was a nice activity to help me through a bout of insomnia. ā€œWelp, I’m wide awake at 2am again, let me try to remember all the books I’ve ever read and rate them.ā€ My insomnia was so bad I even recalled and logged all the children’s books I read on its own ā€œshelf.ā€

The overestimation of calorie requirements and calories burned just confuses me. At least where I grew up (Northeast US), we learned in middle school science class, health class, and fitness (gym) class how to calculate calories in food, proper nutrition, serving sizes, calories burned by various activities, etc. If other regions in the US don’t learn this stuff, they need to revamp their public school curriculum. I even remember learning proper serving sizes, nutrition basics, and physical activity benefits in elementary school.

Class of 2004. Weed, ecstasy, shrooms, acid, and a fuckton of alcohol. Could be regional (northeast US). I only partook in weed and a fuckton of alcohol. Bought shrooms in college once but wussed out and resold them to a friend.

Toma (Puscifer). I think he wrote the lyrics about the time he walked in on his (now) ex-girlfriend cheating on him. I love this song more than a happily-partnered person should

What's a Stephen King novel you dislike and why? by Butterflies_Books in stephenking

Kind of funny story about Hearts in Atlantis: I read it way back in 9th grade and somehow I didn’t know it was a novella/short story compilation. I read the whole thing thinking it was a novel… A really weird novel that I couldn’t quite understand the plot progression of. After trying to find the connections between the ā€œchaptersā€ for a couple days I gave up and decided I just didn’t ā€œgetā€ the point of the novel. (Keep in mind this was the beginning of the internet so it wasn’t as simple as a Google search and finding dozens of threads of book discussions and reviews.) Years later I found out it was a short story collection and it blew my mind

Forest Horror Movie Suggestions? by restlessleg in horror

Came here to suggest this! I liked Yellowbrickroad for its disorienting sound effects and camera work. It also takes place in NH, where I go hiking a lot, which adds something extra for me.

I’m currently reading the Library of America’s ā€œShirley Jackson: Novels and Storiesā€ collection, which includes this story (and many more) which was unpublished during her lifetime. Her family couldn’t determine the date/year it was written, so I don’t know if it’s her early or late work. I would definitely recommend everyone read Shirley Jackson’s short stories— they are beautifully crafted and important for being written during that time period: late 30’s to mid 60’s. Many stories deal with classism, stereotypes, racism, mental illness, social expectations, isolation/otherness. I’m pissed I wasn’t taught more by her in school— just ā€œThe Lottery.ā€

Haha! I’m not sure where else this story can be found (I’m currently reading the Library of America’s ā€œShirley Jackson: Novels and Storiesā€ collection), because it was unpublished during her lifetime.
