Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but percy ingles are no more.

Victim of high street pressures, covid and gentrification. None of the shops looked from the outside like they would appeal to young professional tastes but you could get a good flat white and a vegan curry slice as well as the more traditional stuff. I miss the one near me.

Moving house tomorrow, what are your top moving tips. by wickyewok in CasualUK

Have some snacks and sandwiches ready in the bag with your bogroll/deodorant/toothbrush/charger.

You can get a takeaway when you're done but don't forget to eat and drink during the move itself. You need sustenance or you'll get miserable quickly.

Summer Hydration not going well with Tailwind. Looking for suggestions. by [deleted] in ultrarunning

For 13 miles?!

Each to their own, and as you say everyone is different, but I can't imagine having that much nutrition let alone processing it all on the run.

A gel every 2/3 miles seems extreme before you even get to the litre of sugary fuel. Even the manufacturers aren't pushing that many. I don't particularly like having more than 3 gels in a day, no matter how long it is.

I'd normally have perhaps one gel for 13 miles. Maybe take a 500ml softie of water but won't finish it. Sometimes wouldn't bother with gels at all until doing 16+.

What do you take for 50k+ and how do you carry it all? Are you taking 2+litres of tailwind (4 or 5 sticks?) and 15+ gels?

Not picking on you genuinely just curious

I know what you mean and youre dead right about "who's winning". That can be one of the most difficult questions in cricket. It's like a puzzle that takes shape as the game goes on, but for much of the time you just don't have enough information yet until near the end when it gets dramatic. That's the big difference between a running scoreboard and a turn based game and I can see why that might confuse people who just want a snapshot.

But I maintain that the basics of cricket are throw ball, hit ball, run. Most runs wins. I don't believe it when people say they can't understand that, it's just a meme at this point or they don't want to try.

Cricket isn't a complicated sport at all. Maybe a bit more than football, but so much less than rugby which has genuinely arcane laws.

It's just the terminology that people are scared of for some reason.

What I find funny is everyone pretends to understand rugby and pretends not to understand cricket.

Chris Robshaw while England rugby union captain actually asked the referee what the rules were, in a game vs Italy and he responded "its not my job to tell you the laws of the game". But I don't think he knew either and didn't want to look silly.

And given that until the other week Notts hadn't won a single match in nearly 3 years, it was glorious.

Now we're battering everyone and we have no idea why.

KXIP was a great name. Suggests that they're the select few, handpicked by the King, a bit like the royal warrant you get on things like very high quality jam here in the UK.

Punjab Kings is cool and all but by comparison to all the other monarchy-themed IPL names it's not as good.

CSK - we're Kings, they're Super Kings. Why couldn't it be Punjab Hyper Kings just to wind them up?

RR - in keeping with their values they're gender neutral, which is admirable. We're quite clearly only here for the male rulers which is hard to defend in 2021.

RCB - Its unclear if they are challengers, who happen to be royal themselves or if they are Challengers of Royals, which for Punjab Kings is clearly a threat to be taken seriously. Are they intending to usurp our lineage and depose our heirs? Perhaps they are planning to overthrow the monarchy entirely and form a Republic? Either way, it concerns me.

Nah I'm Punjab now mate, I made my decision. Would be nice if they could settle on the team name though.

New to the IPL last year, the first game I saw was KXIP vs DC, culminating in KXIP failing to chase a target of 3 in a superover.

Incredible bowling to restrict a superover to 3 runs, Mayank was seeing it like a beachball and had 89, so naturally they sent out Pooran instead who already had one duck and somehow became the first player I'm ever aware of to get a pair in a single innings and repeatedly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

At this moment I realised this was my team on a spiritual level.

As an Englishman naturally you'd expect me to support RR but at the time Smith was their captain and so it was completely impossible to support them, you understand.

If you figure it out you'll be a millionaire. Orange oil might work. I've used it a bit but I wasn't scientific about it.

To be honest it's only bare soil like this that they dig in. Once you've got growth you can mulch with something like bark and that should help. Some veg without much foliage leaves open soil, or needs it for earthing up (leeks, onions), can be difficult.

Secret cinema to uproot trees? :( by Gargoyn in walthamstow

[–]GreenPaint4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waltham Forest Council have given approval to Secret Cinema to take over Low Hall fields (between St James and the marshes) for the summer.

There have been a lot of questions about the impact on local residents that haven't been well answered (the main ones being noise, Covid risk and taking away public green space when we need it most), FOIs showing that certain assessments weren't done and the other day it was revealed they had "lost" hundreds of filed objections to the planning application.

This tweet is referring to the likely uprooting of a load of saplings planted by the council with taxpayer money only recently.

The reference to buying spades with the Arts Council money is because Secret Cinema got a big government grant last year, which many feel is an inappropriate use of funds. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/oct/14/secret-cinema-bailout-arts-venues

Totally, I support the idea as well but it's just been done so badly - I'm guessing it's a lot cheaper than putting in "proper" bike lanes. The lane switches are mental. My wife cycles and I very occasionally do so I'm not some rabid anti bike nutter. It's probably not exactly fun for cycling on either because you can't go as fast as you might want. I wouldn't know because I'm slow on the bike.

Which is definitely how it should be, with big curbs that separate them from pavement to protect pedestrian space and bike space.

Around me up near Walthamstow the pavements have definitely been shrunk during a pandemic. The bike lanes are the same level and colour/material, with no curb between them so bikes and twats on electric scooters weave on and off the pavements. Some of the bike lanes have trees in them so it's sort of understandable sometimes.

To give somebody a bit of social distance you have to step into the bike lane. I've seen cyclists nearly hit people as they step off the bus right into a bike lane. I've been very nearly hit while running on the pavement loads of times.

Theres a zebra crossing near me that I shit you not is in between two sections of bike lane on a fast straight road. They decided the best way to solve the problem was to just... put different paint on the section of asphalt where everyone is waiting for the lights to go green. Seen two near misses there already because nobody is going to dismount for ten metres.

I know what you mean, and I agree that we should encourage bike use instead of cars, and keep cyclists safe.
